We used to use a small piece of wire, heated red-hot with a torch. It melts right through the nail, and doesn't hurt. That bruise is right at the cuticle; he's gonna lose the fingernail.

Matt, I'm new to the channel and like what your doing. I could be wrong, but I think I hear you justify stripping the engine down to its bones like you think you shouldn't be doing it or someone has said something that you shouldn't do it. It's perfectly fine to strip it down to it's smallest component, it's your personal project and you can do whatever you want. It also means its getting restored right and your learning how it works too, there is nothing wrong with that.. And we get to go on that journey with you as well without getting our hands dirty or hurt our fingers. Because you are the one doing the work, none of us viewer have the right to say anything about anything what you are doing. Keep it up and do whatever you want to do, I'm really interested in seeing what you eventually end up with. I hope your finger is ok.

Great comment. Yeah, he might not need to, and it would definitely be cheaper and easier than a full teardown. That being said, my first experience wrenching was as a teen, on a barn find, $400 (oddly enough) 1972 240z. My dad and I rolled it into our barn and with his help, me made me take that thing completely apart. Best mechanic lesson I've ever had..... And it let me know that I will never tear one down completely again, unless I HAVE to! 😂

Take a very small, clean drill bit and using just your fingers, drill a hole in your finger nail. You can't believe the pressure that builds up. Trust me, it will feel a whole lot better. I'm a retired machinist and had to do it several times. Enjoying your project. keep up the good work.

Thanks for the video. Ive restored several dozers, the latest being a full resto of a john deere 440. Youre doing good work on the disassembly. If I may give good advice, spend the money and replace any parts that are questionable or suspect. Dont half measure anything and take your time putting it back together. Take good photos and notes. Dont pay attention to the nay sayers. They can talk about how they would do this and that, buy you can bet they dont have the balls and perseverance to attempt to restore a machine like that. Those old Cat engines were built tough with cro magnon engineering/ reliability. If you do it right, that dozer will almost outlast a brand new cat bought today. Best of luck,

Your cat showed up on my feed so I started watching. As soon as I get caught up with the cat I'm curious if your car was on your channel. Your cat seems in good shape other than sitting in the woods for years. I like the idea of this taking you months to get it to run. Find an old cat knuckle buster , and get input there other guys that overhauled theirs on line too.Locwashers were used before loctite chase all bolt holes with bottom taps and cheap spray lube wear goggles !! Spring is for clutch handle to return to disengagement by itself.Do all clutch service now,other way is much worse to do between your legs.Drill and use ease out kit on broken studs , sometimes a little heat -dull gray and a shot of water heat again and should back out..Or tap with small hammer and soak with a rust buster and repeat for a day or two let sit over night.

Really like your taking on the rehabilitation of the D4. Obviously, you, as well as more than a few of your subscribers, have injured fingers,or thumbs, that can slam the brakes on. Ive found my go-to remedy for those types of injuries, is a aluminum expanded metal splint, found in some higher end 1st aid kits...or Amazon. Dress the cleaned finger, then cut a section of metal half an inch longer than your finger, and wide enough to encircle the finger one and a half times. Tape it securely around the finger, gently fold the end in ,covering the end, and go back to work. You can keep working and not worry about hitting it and launching you into low orbit. You can shower with it on, depending on whether its a crush or laceration....take it off to inspect and replace it as it is a custom fit. Just sayin'!

You should've drilled the fingernail right away. It relieves all the pressure which is causing the pain and if done soon enough, could prevent from loosing the nail. Great content. Thank you for sharing your project.

Anyone that has ever worked in a shop knows the pain that comes from a smashed finger nail. You can take a straight pin and heat the head up with a blow torch and push it through the nail. It will certainly relieve the throbbing pain... Thumbs Up!

I used to be a Cat mech & training instructor way-back. Never worked on a D4 this old. It grieves me to see HB using standard extension bars & sockets with an impact wrench, as well as using a hammer--even a soft one--on wrenches. I don't think that parts catalogs are available for these machines anymore. When I was training instructor all those books were available only on microfiche. I would try to see if shop manuals can be found online on the Cat website. I enjoy watching you solve tear-down problems.

Just found this channel. Love the content and the production. One thing to think about. If the engine is sleeved, you may want to pop the sleeves to clean the water jacket cavities around the sleeves. If the cooling system is that mucked up you will want to clean those areas out, right where the heat is generated.

Next time you smash your finger like that, get a small drill bit and drill through the nail BY HAND. The second you go through the fingernail and the blood comes out, your finger will feel better. Instant relief. I’ve done it dozens of times. Keep doing what you are doing.

Also, forget the poking a hot needle into your nail. Chuck up the smallest drill bit you have in your drill. Mount it in your vise & turn it on w/the anti fatig button. Carefully move your nail into the bit while its running till it goes through. Your pain will instantly quit and the nail will not come off unless it's too late.

About the finger nail. Try drilling a small hole in the center of the black area that will take away the thumbing and you might save the nail.

Too late now but when I smash a finger nail like you did I drill a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure, A paper clip heated red hot also works. After you heat the paper clip red hot very carefully tough the nail just enough to melt the nail and the blood will cool the paper clip. Not for the faint of heart. I think My generator just got seized up so im thinking of just removing it and putting a cover plate in its place . Hopefully it will work. Anyway keep the videos coming !

You need to take a small drill and drill through that finger nail and let the blood out, it will heal faster and should relieve the pain. I have never run into an engine that had water intrusion like that. I think you are on the right track to clean it all. I admire your resoursefulness and fortitude in taking on a job like this. You are doing a great job for someone coming from a white collar background. I am glad you are considering removing the winch. I think the tractor is a much later model than the engine. The serial number will tell for sure. You will need to know if you need any transmission parts.

every mechanic has lost a finger nail at one time or another.......i used to straighten out a paper clip and hold it with needle nose pliers ...heat it up till it was red hot ...and gently ..push it thru the nail........watch the blood spurt.........but the pressure is gone.in a second.............

I found it much easier to remove the equalizer spring under the engine. Then the machine can stay level. Much easier to install the engine too.

Painful, these nails squeese. Next time (there will be) glow a thich needle over a gas flame, and carefully melt a hole through the nail. If its fresh, if not, dont bother. The blood will gush out. Instant relief. Great uploads, nice channel, thanks!

Heat a sowing needle red hot and burn a hole in the nail to drain the blood out. It’ll feel so much better. Do not push too hard or you’ll go into your finger and that hurts. You can also use a small drill bit.

An old timer bush remedy for a black nail injury like that is to heat a needle up cherry red and use it to slowly bore just through the thickness of the fingernail to relieve pressure behind it!

If you take a paerclip straighten in out 1/2 way heat the point witha lighter until it glows and then brand your way through the nail into the blood it will releive the pressure and pain. My peditrition did this for me when I was a 10 yr old boy.

I nipped two of my fingers like that some years ago, OUCH! an army medic heated up a needle to red hot and pierced the nail to burst the blood blister under the nails to reduce the swelling.. I got a bit ill watching it, but couldn't take my eyes of it. Lost both the nails but they re-grew over the next few months. It'll continue to smart for a while yet but you should get the swollen finger pierced to save your under-nail.

Next time you get a smashed finger with a nail bed doing what yours did, get a small drill, like #52 or smaller. By hand 'drill' down into the quick of the nail. The blood will gush allowing you to know you went far enough and more importantly, release the pressure and thus relieve your pain.
