Just as a quick note both the Deviate 1 and 2 also had a carbon plate and the Deviate Nitro 2 also had a mix of Nitro Elite and normal Nitro foam like the 3 does. Puma have apparently changed the composition of both those foams for their latest releases which may explain it feeling better than the previous versions but the basic format/setup is the same. While from what I've seen the 3 is more versatile than the 2 I'm surprised you're finding that extra versatility from it being better for tempo/speed work. For me the 2 was very much an uptempo daily trainer with an emphasis on shorter, harder efforts but didn't offer as much on easy and longer runs. With the extra stack height and weight (albeit not that much) in the 3 it seems like they're positioning more as their "super trainer" which can handle those longer runs but perhaps loses out as an out and out speed shoe (sort of how the Saucony Speed changed between the 2 and 3 to basically create the "super trainer" archetype in the first place) with the FST-FWD now being Puma's speed and tempo option. That said, your easy pace is very much in my tempo zone so that may well explain it!

Exactly what I was thinking. Deviate 2 was pretty great for up tempo for me. Slower pace not so much. Thinking of going to the Nitro Elite (3) this generation.

Just a quick note 😂 Appreciate that clarification. The 2 for me was much firmer and offered less energy return for my long intervals and tempo :)
@yianpap60932 ай бұрын
@@BenIsRunning No way! The 3 is clearly firmer! (I have 800km in the DN2 and a second fresh pair and only ran a bit with the DN3 in the shop, but it definitely felt firmer to me). It's weird how subjective this can be. I do remember some other reviewer though also finding the DN3 firmer. I'm also thinking of passing on the DN3 and going for the DNE3 which I tried and was just awesome. Just got a Foreverrun as well which I really like (so far just a very short run).

Puma Deviate Nitro 2 was my first plated shoe. First time putting on a plated shoe felt really good while running and I ran my 5th HM in them. But later on when I bought Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 and other race category plated shoes I noticed a huge difference in the ride. Imo Adidas Boston 12 (it is in direct competition to Puma Deviate Nitro 2)other than the grip is better that Puma Deviate Nitro 2 .The ride is much better in Adidas Boston 12. Agree with you that in the 3rd iteration the Deviate Nitro 3 and the Nitro ELite 3 look very similar and people might get confused. In the second iteration they look very different.

Ben can you please clarify your position on this shoe under cutting the Deviate Elite. I know that your an Elite runner but the majority of us are not so this shoe may suit an average hobby jogger who isn’t looking or requiring the Deviate Elite. Why are concerned about this shoe under cutting the more expensive high performance shoe that many of us may not need to purchase? I’m not an elite :) My point here is that it’s now so close to the top line trainer, for most people it would mean that the elite 3 isn’t considered for race day which for me is a much better option. Sounds a bit extreme if you ask me as sub 1:30 is an achievement alone, and in such a short timespan as 6-7 months, sub 1:20 sounds....extreme. Don't want to put you off setting ambitious goals but it might be one that ends in 2 likely scenarios: a) you don't make it b) worst case you end up injured due to ramping up your training too fast (1:20 requires a lot of mileage). But I wish you all the best, I'm not looking to be mr negative here 😊

At 52 my first half was 1:44, set a goal of sub 1:30 for my next one. It was a big jump to increase training load and faster speed sessions that led to plantar fasciitis and peroneal tendonitis and 4 months of no running.
