They have cool covers. If those same covers were on golden age comics, they would be worth a lot more.

I appreciate your thoughts on pulps. When I discovered pulps a few years ago it was like finding out about the golden age. It’s a whole new world and exciting to experience and learn more about them.

Nothing wrong with pulps. Been buying them up for 3 years now cheap. $15 to $100 would get you a gorgeous cover and book in many cases looking nicer than golden age comics. Ya like skull covers. Pulps have lots of em. In fact, a lot of pulps look better than golden age comics. Cant tell you how many Schomburg covers Ive bought in pulps where there was nothing indicating Schomburg so no one had a clue. Pulps with nice covers will be very collectible.

The pulp had great stories, but they were prose. It's a tough sell to get comic book collectors to purchase pulps (especially at CGC prices) since there aren't enough pictures for them to look at.

16:20 "I think that there is way too much pumping going on right now with pulps." Sounds like a frantic stab at making a killing on a collectible market when they realize the pulp train is leaving the station without them.

Great video, Ryan. I know nothing about pulps (I know nothing about a lot of things). But your video here was very informative and provided a warning I will certainly heed as a collector. Much appreciated!

This also brings into question the grading fees you pay CGC once the values drop. Imagine getting the invoice for X pulp being the current highest grade, all the while they are grading what will be the next highest grade at the same time....

I could swear that 20 to 25 years ago, there was news of a complete All Story October 1912 with first Tarzan that came up for sale in nearly pristine condition.

I know one of the guys who owns one of the 7.5 copies of the Weird Tales Batwoman cover. I also know the guy who pressed it. Lol. Brundage cover Weird Tales are not rare. They were very popular and collected in the day. They are beautiful. But some pulps are truly rare. They were cheaply made and not made to last. I don't have a lot of pulps, but I bought my first when I was 14 yrs old. Steranko's History of the Comics turned me on to them. But I have never paid big money .

Serious SF/Fantasy collectors have been buying pulps for decades to complete their colletions of Burroughs, Howard, Lovecraft, etc. These guys know the market in depth and are more than happy to have you play their game so they can take your money. Tarzan's first appearace (All Story magazine) and first book appearance (Tarzan of the Apes) have long been coveted and I can assure you there are copies of All Story out there that well exceed a 6.0 grade. If you attended some of the big ABAA book fairs of the past 50 years you've likely encountered copy or two. As Automatic Comics advises, proceed with caution. The pulp market is the new Wild West Show of popular culture collectibles, and it will be several years before this market finally settles out.

I'm an Older Collector and The Overstreet Price Guides were actually the Only real way to many various types of different Comics,Magazines,and Pulp Magazines that were actually Being Published and Sold Everywhere back then and actually provided some kind of ideas as to just how much your own Comics and Magazines might actually be worth after a few Years and even much Older Comicbooks & other types of Pulp Magazines as well along with actual visual pictures of literally Every Comicbook and other various Titles that were actually Being made available long before CGC Grading actually came along and took over nowadays,but its in my own personal opinon that The Overstreet Price Guides are still the most important Pricing Catalog Grading Guide to actually have even today as a backup source of information and history about Comicbooks and Magazines Presently as they are still Being made available and sold to Collectors who msy be interest ed in the actual value of thier Comics and Many various other types of Books as well. I agree with you. I’ve been doing research and buying some for over a decade. And have a good idea what pulps regularly sell for. Some of the graded ones have ridiculous prices. I’m mostly sticking with raw Reasonably priced and grade them myself 🙏

Swagglehaus claims they are the next big thing. They have rare one's and artist's that are known for their art and style, some not so rare. But yes, the wood work can bleed when something hits hard, and a bunch of copies are found in Grandpa's closet...

You act like after the pandemic Comics didn't go down and just video games went down in price people lost lots of money in comics that were graded and graded video games and those losses in video games are turning around just like in comics long-term I think that video games are actually the better investment kids playing video games today, are kids reading Comics ? Maybe some manga so 30 years from now those 10-year-olds will be wanting to collect what they we're into and kids are into video games not saying Comics won't be worth money in 30 years I just feel like there will be more collectors of video games in 30 years than in comics

You are wise to wait for this market to mature before buying. People are going to lose a ton of money if they plan to hold longer term but buy in the early stages of this market. This market is prime for ‘first to the market’ speculators who will reap the profits early but leave many buyers with books that will decline in value as more copies hit the census.

Yes, pulp prices has seen significant gains with the introduction of CGC grading, but where's the pump? The pulp subforum on CGC has remain largely unchanged and pulp-related content is mostly non-existent on social media and KZbin. There are no indications that young people are entering the market. Arguably THE best pulp convention is happening right now, Windy City - and the demographics in the room remain unchanged from years past, it's almost entirely people in their 50s or older who have been buying and selling pulps for years if not decades. Finding a 20 year old buyer/seller in the room? Good luck. Pump and dump implies something nefarious going on and that is simply not the case. Though there is nothing wrong with discouraging people from entering a new market, or at least being careful, until some baselines and trends can be established and pricing has stabilized.

I can (almost) guarantee that you won't be seeing 9.9 and 10.0 Pulps. 😂 Also, good video but your argument can be seen in comics everyday as value is always determined by what one collector is willing to pay. So if a value benchmark was established at $264k for that VG, maybe someone else would pay $575k for a FN. Lastly, read about Anthony Tollin and Will Murray's 'discovery' if you haven't already.

I agree totally. The minute CGC said they would grade them, they became popular. They are historically interesting, but I have no interest. Just me.
@richharvey91532 ай бұрын
I've been wondering about that. People have seen the pulps I own, and they always comment something to the effect of, "These pulps are really cool, but (a) I don't know anything about them (b) I don't know anything about the prices (c) I have too many hobbies already." Most pulps are $5 to $25 items, with rare or key pulps going higher. Now that CGC will slab them, the same people are eager to pay ten times what they're actual market value. Why weren't they interested in pulps before CGC? That kind of "interest" will result in money loss, because new pulp investors will need new pulp collectors ... and if the potential collectors never develop sufficient interest and buy ... then the new market collapses.
