'Passing these cars in traffic' - exactly guys. Manufacturers would "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday", these were our parents' cars, they were the small family saloons and hatchbacks that people could afford a road-going version of. Apart from Ford, GM were also represented with Vauxhall and Opel over the years, before Chevrolet came along more recently. But most were 2000cc 4-Cylinder NA engines but putting out around 250-300bhp until the turbo changes in more recent years. F1 teams like Renault/Williams/TWR were involved - multi-million dollar budgets and all that jazz.. TOCA Touring Cars on the old PS1. Some amazing races over the years.

Back in the day this would draw huge crowds, and TV audiences. The costs spiralled out of control. They had some F1 teams running the cars, such as Williams running the Renault team, TWR (Tom Walkinsure who ran Arrows F1 and the Jag Le Mans cars). Also there were several exF1 drivers that raced. They were basically road cars you could buy from the dealer, but had a load of alterations. The old saying, "win on Sunday sell on Monday" was why the manufactures would spend big money. Wrong!!! You could NOT buy this car and race it straight out of the showroom. They spend tens of thousands to change almost everything. Engine rebuilds, carbon brakes, uprated suspension, bigger turbos, amazing fuel injection systems, they have full roll cages, fire extinguishers. On a site I just visited it says that you can buy a car (minus engine) which would be race ready for £100.000. An engine would be approximately £25.000 with the option to be leased. A base car from the showroom is approx £40.000.

Back in the 90s the company car sales market was massive. If you got a fleet car manager on board with your racing team there was a good chance his company was buying multiples of your salon car next time around. BTCC still going strong today, considered by many to be the pinnacle of British motorsport.

This was on a saturday and a sunday, I'd race 1/10th version of these cars every sunday morning, come home and watch the racing. My lecturer from universtiy worked for the BMW team back in the early 90s and some of the tricks they'd pull to get the most out of these cars were as followed: > Bodyshells were supplied in kits, and streched and squished to improve aerodynamics, a windscreen from the road version would NOT FIT. The panels were even acid dipped to thin the metal down. > They were so light, that to pass tech inspection, they'd have a 15kg (30lbs!) clipboard that had wheel weights stuck to the back then covered up to look normal which was rested during weigh in.. talk about sneeky! > Engines had to be 2.0 litres , 4 valve heads only. Swindon race engines (Vauxhall) reversed the head to bring the intake to the front of the engine bay to get a ram air intake and made 310bhp at 8500rpm.. N/A , these weren't turboed! > Volvo did race the 850 T5 in estate form in 1994, then found form with the saloon version after TWR reworked the cylinder head on the 5 pot engine.. each head was £10k EACH to machine and make. given the rules stated they had to use the original castings. so they machined it, reangled the head and went from making around 280bhp.. to over 320bhp! > Williams F1 ran the Renault Lagunas (Blue / yellow cars) and budgets for the cars were as mentioned over £500k to run for the year.

The best Era of BTCC in the 90’s. The cars may look like stock cars you can bring to the track and race, but as with NASCAR these were basically stripped to the chassis and built to race by either the Manufactures themselves (for example Ford, Vauxhall, Bmw) or some cars were built and prepared by a professional race car builder such as Prodrive and TWR which was endorsed and subsidised by the manufacturer. There were two championships within each race, manufacturers and privateers. Towards the end of the 90’s some Car manufacturers were spending close to £1 million per car with some of the best drivers from all over the world taking part. Costs started to spiral which is why the rules were changed in the early 2000’s and that, sadly, was the end of the Super Touring Cars. The championship still runs today but it’s a shadow of its former glory! Ps the Alfa Romeo on two wheels was being driven by Gabriele Tarquini, we were trackside when this happened 👍🏻 Love the channel Guys, keep up the great work!! 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 RIP Murray Walker (legend)

Hi guys, great reaction. British Touring Car Championship is still going and on TV here in the UK, always been very popular because of the great racing compared with F1 etc. The cars you were just watching were from the BTCC in the 90's which was possibly its hey day. The idea is to take the cars you can buy off the fore court of your major car manufacturers (stock cars) and then turn then into racing cars obviously within the BTCC modification rules. The racing teams are pro racing teams that spend £100,000's on the cars and the cars are raced by pro racing drivers or drivers that have bought their way into racing much like Nascar or even F1. If you like this you should check out the British Superbike Championship which is just like BTCC but with superbikes and they even race on the same tracks around the UK and again the racing is very exciting and close.

The SuperTouring Era of BTCC is considered by most as the golden era of BTCC. it has been said that the cars themselves are as temperamental as F1 cars. Williams F1 ran the Renault team, and Prodrive (of Subaru WRC fame) ran the Alfa Romeo, Honda, and Ford teams at various points during the '90s. The SuperTouring regulations were ultimately scrapped as costs for what was supposed to be 'relatable' motorsport were astronomical, and the championship had become an arms race to produce faster and faster cars. in 1990, a competition car cost around £60,000 to build, by the latter part of the '90s, a similar car cost roughly £250,000

Daniel - all the top manufacturers wanted to show off their latest road going saloons & this was the championship to do it, so you're right, watch them race on a Sunday, go & buy one for the family on Monday.

2:59 funny you mention Australia’s V8 Supercars. As far as I know that’s Australian Touring Car. Or began that way

Hit the nail on the head boys. A big reason for the huge success of the BTCC in the 90s was the variety of production based cars. They were relatable and the racing was second to none. If you get a chance, check out a French movie from the same era called Taxi. It’s about a taxi driver and he uses on of the cars in this clips (a Peugot 406). Don’t mean for a reaction, just recreation😁🏁

BTCC was amazing. You had factory teams, so the Honda was being driven by a paid driver, with backup, engine etc from the Honda car company. Then you had independents, running their own cars, sometimes paying a driver, sometimes the driver was paying, sometimes they drove their own car. There are a lot of different classes in British motorsport, mist are worth checking out, especially if you want to see "normal traffic" style cars, or vintage classics going wheel to wheel, or a single make like 2CV or mini. Dive deep man, it's all there. Keywords Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Goodwood, Snetterton, Donington, Mallory Park, Knockhill, Anglesey, Castle Combe, Oulton, Thruxton and more. Touring cars, hot hatch, motogp, superbikes, lots of GT, trucks, sidecars, karts, hillclimb, trials... I used to love watching the classics race at Brands.
