I think the explanation for Mac still being 17 after these years is that in the world of Nintendo most of the characters never grow old, so gamers back then can relate to good old times and gamers today can enjoy the same as those before them. Generation after another will share the same experience from past, to present, to future.

IIRC, the only reason it was made pink in the original NES version was because of color palette issues - a white or black tracksuit wouldn't show up well on the screen, so they made it pink so it would stand out. From there, for nostalgia reasons, they've decided not to change the color.
