I'm genuinely curious because I've only seen this once before but what is the point of a timer that does not actively show progression? It only updates when you split.

Well, single segment runs of this game typically use the in-game timer instead of timing it RTA. So the end time turns out to be the sum total all individual times for each fight. As the run progresses, the in-game times are entered manually after each fight. There are many reasons for this. One of the most obvious is the time it takes an opponent to get up after being knocked down. Since there's some randomness involved with this, the run doesn't lend itself well to being timed RTA; you could lose a run simply because an opponent got up on an 8 count instead of say a 2 count. Hope that makes sense.
