One particular interesting thing about this comic...is that it mentions that Gotham have capital punishment. But to me that doesn't make any sense... since most villains and their goons go to Arkham or Black gate and just wait the next chance to escape. Do Arkham is the size of small city or something?Is the bar for insanity is so low that everyone criminal avoids the chair with it?
@ExeErdna4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that seems to be a miss because that'll make Gotham a state and not a city which means they'll need to confirm where Gotham is in the US in DC universe. Since Capital Punishment is state-based not city-based and in most states have a funk about them due to innocent people getting killed. Yet here like you said they just yeet bad guys to Arkham or Black Gate. We KNOW Amanda Waller keeps some people alive to do her wetwork which kinda counts.

Gotham is supposed to be in New Jersey, a state that abolished the death penalty in 2007....

Iunno how much it helps, but I always got the impression that Arkham doesn't *just* service Gotham. It's a (supposedly) super-max facility for the criminally insane, it probably covers most of New England if not the entire North East. Like, Gotham has an overabundance of repeat offenders, in the same way a city with a teaching hospital ends up with a higher percentage of doctors; once you're in Gotham why bother going home? But I never thought that only Gotham villains ended up there. So yeah. Like any other private prison. Too full, poorly run, full of corruption. I think the bar for capital punishment is just very high. Like, it's there. But you have to *really* piss people off to get it. It was a mostly empty threat, of the like the prosecution often throws around to scare the ignorant into pleading out (or the kind a savvy con artist can use to inflame their fans, or both). It didn't bother me over much.
@rc59894 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the trope of criminal insanity is how all the villains get to come back eventually. Plus, we don’t have to read about boring trials that would never happen anyway. Gotham is so riddled with crime that any prosecutor would just cut a deal for a life sentence anyway. Getting a conviction, without a death sentence is a bad result for a prosecutor when it costs a ton of money and time. The system is supposed to be broken, that is the whole purpose of the Bat Family. Is every big Bat push from DC going to end with a years worth of comics about putting society on trial? Oof!

I just connected the dots. This goes WAY deeper than Gotham, it goes nation wide, international. Punchline's plan, to bring chaos to Gotham is just step ONE. The riot that will be sparked by this trial will spread across the city, and into the suburbs. Batman, having lost control of the city, is seen with contempt by the eyes of Gotham. Superman arrives to help the aching city, but Superman, he only matters because, where he goes, Lois Lane follows, to get that big scoop. Phase two begins, lots of stuff happens, the internet does stuff, and with every second that ticks by, the Punchline's hand creeps closer to Lois, and another DC universe shattering comics cover featuring Batman, broken and helpless, staring on in disbelief as Superman, once again, a best man. Lois and Punchline are wedded. BEST COMIC EVER.

The plot element that is destined to be forthcoming is how the Joker takes all of this. If she becomes too big it pushes him out of the limelight, something that has been shown as a sore spot for him in the past with Harley, which also opens up how Punchline will respond to his abusive side. Right now the blush is still on the rose and they are getting along as well as two mentally disturbed individuals can, but eventually he's going to get pissed off and decide to take it out on her at some point - and that's when we'll see how unique she is or isn't. Harley put up with it for ages, and likely only ever left him because of the intervention of Harley's friends like Ivy and others telling her she deserved better. She was a college educated professional and yet still under his sway and taking his abuse for a long time. Will Punchline become his "punching bag" or will she stand up to him? If she goes against him, he's been shown as clever enough to figure out whatever games she is playing, and could be a deadlier opponent for her than fighting Batman. If she takes the abuse, it will only get worse for her from there, because he will always take steps to make sure she never gets the appearance of more relevance than him. The fact she is building a following of goons of her own can't sit well with him, and could lead to a power struggle, but unlike Batman, the Joker would kill her if he can. It may be a long game story if this is something DC is seeing and actually planning, but what they've set up so far already should be putting her on the Joker's radar to take her down a peg a little bit.
@femto75793 жыл бұрын
You left out an option the only way for her to deal with the abuse is if she is likewise abusive. Joker has often responded well to people that just don’t take his shit he gets off on somone who fights back and aren’t just another one of his goons
@UltramanGaijin3 жыл бұрын
@@femto7579 No, I considered that, but it's a very fine line to walk. Just enough and he is intrigued and stimulated to play along for awhile, too much and he's offended and goes straight to killing. Harley has pushed back in recent years, and while it has intrigued him, it has also moved him to attempt to kill her and hurt those around her as well. The biggest issue Punchline faces, however, is stealing his stage. If she seems to be about to outshine him in any way he will immediately move to kill her - this has been a staple for a while now. She will either need to step back into a submissive role and let him take all the credit, or he will see her as a threat. If she pushes back against his ego and self-gratification, that will supercede any possible stimulation he could/would get from her resisting him. He is insane, so how quickly and how violently he responds is uncertain, but at some point he's going to put his foot down. How she responds to that will define their dynamic. If she resists and attempts to steal his thunder he will likely take her down, or attempt to. It's very likely he already has a plan in reserve anyway, he does that. All of this is subject to the writers and the current dynamic, of course, but based upon the current history of the Joker, his past relationships with his goons, temporay partners, and especially Harley, these courses of action seem most likely. Punchline is a new generation villain, so maybe she has planned for him as well, but that remains to be seen.

It appears to me that Punchline has always been a sociopath and psychotic, it took the Joker's antics to manifest it. There is really no endgame to the Joker's twisted cycle of crime and chaos. To quote, "Some men just like to see the world burn". Punchline is looking for purpose and admiration that she gets from media crazed adoring fans. She's playing the sympathy card while subliminally subduing in a cult-like fashion. Is this a criticism of our time? Seduction of the innocent? A twisted awakening for those that have meaningless lives or no direction or purpose to their current situations? If you sway enough people, you can convince them that "if I shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, no one will notice". This storyline is striking close to home. BTW, I like your homage to Punchline. That just reads to me as "I'm not like other girls" desire to be taken seriously but the truth is she's just an obsessed fangirl. Evil? Sure, but still an obsessed fangirl who is not as much of a super villain as she wants to be seen as. . She cares too much about being seen as edgy, hardcore and evil, whereas if she truly was there would be no need to try hard. Shitty cold blooded person? Yes, but ultimately pathetic. Imo the logical end to this character would be that Joker sees potential in her... but to use for his own ends because that is his character.

I think this sets up Punchline well and makes her far more than just a Joker clone. In fact, she'd make a great foil for Oracle if they keep her social media machinations as a primary means of inciting change

My question I guess is... where is her training? I've seen nothing in her past that says why a normal girl can pick up knives and outfight Harley. Also... they say she's different from Harley... cause she plays the mind tricks unlike Harley the psychologist.

When you critically think about those two points it ruins a good chunk of her character, especially considering how young she is

@Fandom Breaker where does it imply that Joker trained Harley? From what I remember Harley used to do gymnastics and was introduced as a character that does the fighting FOR Joker.
@indigo31743 жыл бұрын
@Fandom Breaker and you think it makes sense that Joker trained Harley even tho she did the fighting FOR him? And on top of that is better at it than him? Dude...
@indigo31743 жыл бұрын
@Fandom Breaker depends on the Joker. In the batman Animated Series he uses Harley as the person who fights for him,same goes for the new Harley Quinn cartoon even in some comics the Joker would rather let Harley fight. Harley did Gymnastics which she uses when she fights plus,she got a boost in Power and is immune to toxins,which all came from Ivy.
@indigo31743 жыл бұрын
@Fandom Breaker Joker doesn't really explain that either,he abused her and lied to her,treated her like trash,you think he'd actually train her? To him it would probably be wasting time. It's either she leaarned by herself in some way,picked it up from Ivy,Catwoman or whoever or we can just say she's a Mary Sue and that's it. We would need a comic explaining how she knows all this because so far,like I said,She only gained a boost in power from Ivy and is immune to toxins and knows gymnastics.
@artemiswolf45084 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree when you said that people wouldn’t believe she did nothing wrong. There are many people willing to forgive much worse things with the right persuasion. The line “the joker is bad but she’s not the joker” is particularly poignant, that is actually an argument common in indoctrination *”Sure maybe she’s A but is not like she’s B”* . You justified the controversial aspects of A by comparing it to B, this goes further and further until B is essentially indistinguishable from A but people still defend B because the transition was slow enough. I also think people seriously underestimate how easy it is to indoctrinate someone. A combination of isolation, peer pressure, group mentality and appeal to emotions with the right amount of force can make almost anyone believe even the stupidest ideas. And I’m not saying teenagers are dumb and gullible but they are specially vulnerable to this kind of thing. This story was fascinating in that aspect.

I really enjoyed this story. I think (and really, REALLY hope) that Punchline was just using the apology video to manipulate her audience by making herself the victim. I don't know. To me from what I have seen the videos on this channel about her, there a part of me that thinks she has her own goals. Her own adjectives. And to her, Joker might just be a tool for whatever those goals are. I could be wrong. But there is a part of me that thinks that Punchline is using The Joker in manner that Joker himself might be unaware of. I may not have seen all the videos with Punchline. I randomly check this channel now and then. So I will acknowledge there may be gaps in my information. But in the video titled, Punchline Wins? | BATMAN Joker War 100, there was thing that stuck out at me. Joker did something sooner then he was suppose to. Which then resulted in their plan to fall apart. Which then resulted in The Underbroker cutting ties with both Joker and Punchline, and all this frustrated Punchline. And then she called someone telling them that things were ending sooner then expected, she remembered the plan, and that she loved them. I do not think that was The Joker she was talking to. Because I personally do not think she loves The Joker in any fashion. Also she probably would not have need to tell Joker that things were ending sooner then expected. He probably would have already known that. I think she was talking to some unknown person that has not been seen yet. And that is part of the reason why I think she is using The Joker. I think Punchline has a plan with this unknown person, that The Joker is unaware of. She did not join Joker because she likes him, I think she joined him because she thinks he could be useful to her. That is my personal thoughts and opinions thus far. But I can totally be wrong.

I mean, on one hand, you could say that it underestimates the intelligence of Gotham's people for so many of them to be falling for Punnchline's bullshit. However, these are the same citizens that have seen the Joker commit Mass genocide in it multiple times, seem bane take it over the city, has always had a classist mobster problem and let's not forget the time that the entire city literally collapsed underneath itself and became a "No Man's Land". Say what you want about how internet culture is depicted in this, that's a very complicated and nuanced conversation, but if we're looking at the citizens of Gotham city, I think it's be giving them too much credit to NOT fall for this.

I continue to love this direction! I like the exploration of Joker's relationship to Gotham and the idea that the place would capitalize on his exploits. Because really, it totally would. We see it happen with Salem and the witch trials and with other places of mass death and destruction. And I like the idea of the Joker being focused on one heckler in the audience at the expense of the rest of the audience; that's a fun metaphor!

Isn't Dr. Leslie Thompkins a regular type doctor? You know a doctor that heals the body and not the mind. Why was she at the trial giving her opinion of Punchline mental health?
@tomorrow4eva3 жыл бұрын
Leslie is a GP and a surgeon and a mental health professional. She's probably a paediatrician as well. She's like the scientists from the Golden Age - oh, you do medicine? Therefore you do all the medicine! Yeah, my first thought when the judge called her was also: hang on, since when is she a mental health professional? And where does she get time while running her free clinic to participate in trials as an expert witness? Does she need the money? I agree with Sasha that there are a lot of reality things this storyline glosses over in order to tell its story without obstacles and to involve characters we know.

It's the first thing that's made her interesting to me. I don't think it handled the things it wanted to discuss perfectly, but yeah. It got closer than the few others that tried, and it'll only get hashed out through meta-conversation and you can't have a conversation with only one voice. It's not this comic's fault it's so far a monologue, time will fix that. So... yeah. Props for that, and props for being an adult who's actually met a kid recently (the writer I mean), even if some of the nuances are lost. I can most certainly say that Tynion doesn't understand how the internet works. There'd be no way in hell for Punchline to gain such a momentum and actually increase it. She'd be labeled a Lolcow already. Then there's another issue: 1. became obsessed with the Joker during school/uni and has actively been trying to get in touch with him from then on 2. is clearly addicted to attention 3. considers the Joker a genius for his antics 4. is self centered 5. is manipulative, using people as pawns to get her way Soooo.... how exactly is she any different than Harley? Like, at all. It's literally Harley's pre-New52 origin and mindset. The only real difference here is that Punchline isn't a naturally cheerful person. Tynion just copy-pasted her and slapped another design on even though he claimed he's gonna create Harley's polar opposite (wich actually would be any given Batgirl but whatever). The character continues to be a mediocre letdown and Tynion's work on Batman is somehow even more lackluster than King's. Atleast the later tried.... something... I guess.... Also, Gotham doesn't reside in a state with the death sentence. Well, technically. While the state of New York (where Gotham and Metropolis are located alongside the city of New York... very crowded there) does still have the death sentence, it had been ruled unconstitutional and hasn't been enforced since 1963. So not only does Tynion not know anything about the internet, he also doesn't know anything about the franchise he's been working with now and about any real world legislative decisions.
