I'm 38 now. When I was a little kid, walking into arcades and hearing all the sounds coming from these games was the most exciting thing for me. This was one of my favorites back then. Haven't played it since they had it down in Seaside Heights NJ more than 20 years ago. Would love to have one of my own.

Man, I was so OBSESSED with this game. I played it until I completely dominated the game. I'd get to the point where I'd nearly "turn over the score" before it would go back to zero...so I'd get scores like 999, 970, etc...before quiting. The top 20 or 25 scores would save on the game whereas the other scores wouldn't be saved wen the game was turned off. So weird...but NOBODY could beat me in the San Antonio area around that time...great memories. Thanks for putting this up.

This machine fascinated me when I first saw it back in 1984 in an arcade near my school. I couldn't get past Bald Bull back then. I played it in Las Vegas at the Pinball Hall of Fame in recent years and got to Mr. Sandman for ths first time, even though I hadn't touched a Punch Out machine in over 25 years.

I remember this game all too well. I used to go over 100 fights easily and constantly flip the score. When Piston Hurricane stepped into his corner and came back, I had a left waiting for him and sent him flying back into his corner with that left.

On the 2009 installment Punch-Out!!'s disc, the character Disco Kid's data is labeled "kidquick," leading to the belief that he is actually Kid Quick. While it is uncertain if Disco Kid is in fact the same character as Kid Quick or if Kid Quick was possibly intended to appear in the game before being retooled as a new character, what is true of this connection is that the developers had Disco Kid retain all of Kid Quick's statistics.

Playland Arcade I presume? Man, I've heard so much about NYC arcades of that time, wish I were old enough to have been around then ('80's-early '90's). The one and only time I played this coin-op was at the defunct Lazer Park, which was right off of Times Square, about ten years ago. It was the last of the old-school arcades in Times Square before it got closed in 2006.

Yeah, he looked alot like Appolo Creed from Rocky. I think one of the reasons why he was omitted from the NES edition was because Nintendo was looking to stack the home version's roster with a cast of diverse nationalities -- Hence their decision to make him Piston Honda from Japan. Mr. Sandman and Mike Tyson ended up representing the black pugilists, I guess.
@jstephenj15 жыл бұрын
That's one helluva afro for a Cuban. I always thought Piston Hurricane's look was inspired by Apollo Creed. Did they ever specify each of the fighters' nationality? I always figured that it was only after the NES game that they actually provided character backstories.

Clearly the main character is Mac Lee Green, who was going to fight Apollo Creed before suffering a hand injury.

It's interesting how the Piston Hurricane in the arcade was black whereas the one in the SNES was Cuban. I suspect that it would be implausible for both Kid Quick and Pizza Pasta to be included in the upcoming Wii version of Punch Out! due to the stereotypical nature of those two characters, which I find ironic considering that they seemed to play to every stereotype to the hilt -- particularly in the case of Great Tiger and Piston Honda.

Totally agree. I thought I was the only one who prefers the NES punch out over the SNES SPO. Most people I know like SPO over the NES version. I tend to find the NES version more fun and challenging. Still to this day I often have difficulty with Mike Tyson/Mr Dream as opposed to Nick Bruiser who I breeze by on a constant basis.

I personally think Punch Out for the NES is superior to both the arcade and the SNES version in terms of the gameplay and variety. I -- like you -- also appreciated the 3 round format as well, and the fact that the player was able to win via decision and felt that it was a formula that was sorely missing on SPO for the SNES. In fact, much of the charming effects of PO for the NES were missing, like the ring entrance themes, character marquees, and even the rematches of 3 of the characters.
@GeaForce13 жыл бұрын
@nibornna it's hard till you get the systems. Enemies eyes turn yelow right before attacking and the greater the power bar, the faster your attacks, and the easier to knock down. Then, if you learn how to deal with specials (for example, you can completely avoid Piston's barrage by blocking up, down, up, down, up, down, wait and then dodge) you'll beat the game easily

Sure brings me back. I remember as a teen being able to "flip" the game about three or four times which made Glass Joe impossible. Then finally getting to "flip" it a couple of more times only to make Piston Hurricane impossible. I never figured out how people got real hight scores like 999,998. It must of been some type of exploit. Does anyone know why Kid Quick never made a "blue gloves" Appearance?
