Oh that wire wheel trick is actually really clever! In art school my printmaking teacher taught us to use a wire brush to remove the soft wood out of our woodblocks to get a wood grain texture in our prints but it never occurred to me that you could do the same thing but faster with power tools. Thanks for the tip! 🤓 I’ll almost forgive you for the salt and vinegar chip slander for it 😉

I love carved wooden pub signs and this one turned out great! Up here in maine my band played a bar that had one of these wooden signs hanging out front beautifully weathered. The inside of the bar was all exposed brick and rustic wood beams, and huge mahogany bar. The "mug club" they had encouraged people who got membership to paint the bottom of the ceramic mugs with designs and they hung those from a rack over the bar. The whole place had a cool vibe, they brew their own beer and the food is great too. Of course Covid put a damper on all live music that is still in effect two years later but with costs and staffing inflation and shortages, at least they are still open at all. But this sign reminds of the place.

I have a shapeoko 3xxl, you've got to try masking tape and ca glue for work holding. These days I mostly only use clamps if I'm setting something up to make repeat cuts. Put down a layer of masking tape on machine bed, a matching layer on the bottom of your work piece and then use some ca glue to glue the piece down. Hold really well for the cnc and then pops right off when you pull on it after. It's best use case is when you are cutting things out, saves messing with tabs as the entire surface area of contact is being held down and not just the outer edges.

That turned out so good! And I love that you had to add wood texture to actual wood! This kind of project makes me want to buy a CNC machine... though I know I'd never use it enough to justify the cost... or the space it takes up. Or get good enough to actually use it to its full potential. And I tell myself that every single time I look up pricing! Maybe I could convince my wife that we could make cool holiday decor with it...

When using the vinegar mix on pine, first saturate the wood with very dark black tea and let it dry. The vinegar mix reacts with tannin and pine has very little. The tea adds lots. Try that mix on oak though. It'll look awesome!

@Punished Props Academy Cool sign! I do hobby CNC stuff sometimes and I started out using my brothers Shapoko 3 XXL. Here's some useful stuff that I learned along the way to maybe check out. I'm a big fan the blue tape and superglue method of working holding. It's nice for a few reasons: 1. I don't need tabs. Meaning I can cut right to the final outline. 2. No clamps to run into. 3. It's flatter than double-sided tape and doesn't gum up my endmills as much. If you had used the blue tape method for your sign you would have been able to do a 2D Contour around the outside of the sign. No bandsaw needed. Though you would probably need to add a (preferably permeant) spoilboard you don't mind cutting into. I started using a z-axis touch plate rather than a piece of paper to zero the z-axis.It's a lot faster and for me at least gives better results. I know Carbide 3D makes a 3 axis touch plate but it's kind of pricey. The (z-only) one I use is just a cheap one I got from Amazon. I don't know if it's compatible with the custom controller board Carbide 3D ships with the Shapeoko 4 but you might be able to get it to work. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GT3CHWZ/ I don't know about the Shapeoko 4 but the older Shapeokos used to be GRBL based. If the Shapeoko 4 is GRBL based as well you can replace Carbide Motion [which was rather flakey back when I used it] with something better. I personally like gSender these days. One of the nice things about gSender Vs Carbide Motion is that between jobs gSender retains the zeros I had set. This makes setting up fixturing and batch work much easier. It also come in handy if I have to restart a job. sienci.com/gsender/ Also, I noticed you surfaced your stock right to the edge far past the area containing your part. As far as I can tell there wasn't a real need to do that. While it wasn't a big deal extra operations like that will burn up your tools, add time to the job, waste stock, and create sawdust. There are many ways to contain toolpaths in Fusion 360. The simplest (though somewhat dangerous) method is to set the stock size in Fusion 360 to be smaller than the actual physical size of the stock. You will need to check to make sure that your toolpaths don't involve any moves that will crash the machine into the stock. Anyway good luck and keep the rad videos coming!
@punishedprops2 жыл бұрын
I gotta get one of those Z-Axis touch plates! Thanks for the tips. =)
@ThePaulGraham2 жыл бұрын
@@punishedprops It's a definite time saver and cuts down on some of the hassle factor of setting up. Though, fair warning, if you don't go with the official Carbide BitZero (or one of the many knock-offs on Amazon) you will almost certainly need to move away from using Carbide Motion. The dimensions of the official Carbide touch plate are hard coded into Carbide Motion and the offsets can't be adjusted to suit something different. The good news there is that you can always test out an alternative g-code sender to make sure it works with the Shapeoko 4 before you decide which touch plate to buy.
