Pete saying black should know he was defeated reminds me of the opening scene in Gladiator; “People should know when they’re conquered.” “Would you? Would I?”
@Moorooten
@Moorooten 2 ай бұрын
I could relate to the master player, I have difficult to know when to concede and when to fight. Also there is a layer here where you don't know if the leading player is good enough to realize that he has won. If you were let's say an intermediate player that just happen to get a great game there could be a point of trying to fight back. Judging other players skill through fog can be hard, perhaps that's the difference between master-level and GM-level?
@JudgeDredd010
@JudgeDredd010 2 ай бұрын
Sure there is certainly skill in that but black lost this game when he allowed Pete to grow so big! Needed to address him before he killed blue to have a chance in the end game… this would have been painful for black to do but he needed to slow/stop the snowball (at his expense) and allow other players to get involved and help… that or stand back and take second!!
@thenonsequitur
@thenonsequitur 2 ай бұрын
I don't think the fog changed much here since black had visibility on everything Pete was doing anyway. Black saw Pete's great cap location and opening plays, and saw him quickly taking bonuses and playing super good neighbor. And then he saw Pete make 2 consecutive kills. By that point, black can (and should) reasonably assume that Pete is at least an expert. Intermediate players just don't play as well as that.
@askdjmqweqwe
@askdjmqweqwe 2 ай бұрын
I actually agree with you here. Pete wasn’t banking tonnes of troops on caps so maybe was an expert, and he did have an out to win - if green grew a pair and helped fight Pete, there was an Avenue to victory. That being said, if black was a good GM I don’t think he’d have let Pete hold Russia, black would have taken it for himself to try and negotiate a more equal end game. Letting Pete have +20 on him for multiple turns left him in a lost position where he had to rely on Pete making quite big mistakes to lose. He could also have sided with blue to take on Pete which could have been another interesting option. When it became obvious green wasn’t willing or able to fight, I think black should have just sat on 1 card and skipped, hoped Pete was gonna give him second for being a homie at the start.

Hey Pete, you talked about happiness not increasing past around 100K, the study that found this and got publicised had a fundamental flaw in that it only offered an AB solution : are you happy yes or no? It didn’t measure how happy people were, just whether they classed themselves as happy. This has been repeated (including the initial researcher of the famous paper) with a graded scale (1 being least happy, 10 being in paradise) and actually what we find is that money does make you happier, if you’re already happy around this 100K mark. So if you’re rich and miserable, money isn’t he answer. If you’re rich and happy, more money will help. So money does buy happiness, kind of, on average. You need money to satisfy your basic needs and wants, once these are satisfied you need to work out what makes you happy. And very often a bunch of money can help you explore that. So all the old sayings of “money doesn’t buy you happiness but it sure as hell helps” or “money doesn’t buy you happiness but I’d rather cry in a Ferrari” are empirically shown to be quite true.

23:50 minor correction. Money buys happiness ad infinitum. With 1 exception: people experiencing major emotional distress (grieving someone's death, major depressive disorder, relationship loss, etc). Those individuals do seem to level off at about $100k, because the money up to that point is alleviating the stresses of all typical life expenses. There is a point where more money is not increasing happiness at nearly as larger a rate as it used to though. I don't recall that limit. But 2021 and 2023 had some breakthrough studies that completely debunked the prior research (which was done by one of the same authors). Money buys happiness for most people most of the time.

The interesting point was that the original study only offered “are you happy yes or no?” And the new study offered a scale 1-10. What it found was if you were already rich and unhappy, 100K+ and low on the scale, you didn’t get happier. If you were below that the results were the same. If you were happy and rich you got happier. So if you’re rich and unhappy more doesn’t help. But for everyone else, it’s worth a try at least
@SnorriTheLlama
@SnorriTheLlama Ай бұрын
@@askdjmqweqweI guess in a way that says that if you are rich and unhappy, being richer won’t make you happier because there is a cause to your unhappiness likely not related to wealth (relationship, health etc). Whereas if you are happy and get richer, it may increase the opportunities for you to experience further happiness.

Pete, please correct me if I am wrong (I am taking a philosophy course at UofT), It seems your view of happiness is analogous to at least one of the criteria of Aristotle's Eudaimonia. Your view that happiest is a state of being seems to align with Artistotle's dispositional state argument? Thoughts? (love it when you talk philosophy, we went over the skeptics and I was reminded of one of your most famous videos where you talk about skepticism I think with Xerokee? (I am not sure))

Pete dont get so petty. Black had every right to try and address you. He's allowed to play for the win without you being vindictive. Often you take these things personally. This is my only point of constructive criticism and I hope you take it onboard in the manner it is given. Considered. Enjoy your content otherwise. Snow-ballus.

I'd largely agree, since it's almost always my tendency to try to win, but pete definitely had this game on lockdown (and a clear distant advantage), so the only reason to try to win here would be for the sake of the challenge, to see if it would be possible. But black didn't play it right if he really wanted to correctly play for first (or second).
@thenonsequitur
@thenonsequitur 2 ай бұрын
By the time black chose to fight back, he zero chance of winning the contest against Pete. If black wanted to play for first place, he needed to start contesting Pete several rounds earlier when they were about the same size. He waited until Pete was too big to contest, which clearly signaled he was in an alliance for second place. And then he betrayed Pete after it was already too late. Sure, he had every right to contest, but Pete also has every right to punish him for it. I personally believe Pete made the right choice.

@@thenonsequitur @timothyfranklin6040 Whether Black had a chance or not is debatable and not relevant. And a hypothetical. Did Pete have an advantage? Sure. But Pete sulking when Black attacked and his response was "I was going to give you second!" Well, perhaps black had their own opinion or just didnt want to go quietly and, roll the dice. Doesnt excuse Pete's childish vindictiveness. In my humble.
