During Vaikkom Sathyagraha , Sikh brothers came down to Vaikkom in Kottayam district to help sathyagrahis , they made food for them (Voluntary ) etc. People there where so impressed with this gesture that they started converting to Sikhism, some added Singh to their names. Gandhiji asked Sikh volunteers to return because the sathyagraha was for the rights of Hindus (so called lower caste) against upper caste Hindus. He found interference of other religions inappropriate. If there was no such act by Gandhiji Kerala would have been second or third highest in terms of Sikh population. Even today there are old people with sikh names in central kerala mainly in Kottayam district............................
