_Hard Core Logo_ (1996) by director Bruce McDonald. It's a road movie about a band, sort of based on D.O.A., on tour in the 90s, trying to recapture their 80s glory years. The screenplay was adapted from the book _Hard Core Logo_ by Michael Turner, which was about his time in the band Hard Rock Miners. _Leningrad Cowboys Go America_ (1989) by director Aki Kaurismäki. It's a Finnish road movie about a polkabilly band trying to make it big in the USA.

X2 Hard Core Logo is was awesome. Beyond being a great film, Hugh Dillon from the Headstones played the lead roll and went on to become a pretty successful actor afterwards. The band Billy Talent was named after the guitar player in that movie. The final scenes were shot in my hometown, Edmonton, at the Rev where we went for the majority of our punk shows... and Quinten Tarantino liked it enough that he bought the distribution rights in the U.S.

I think 'This is England' and the related series are some of the best works I've ever seen. Yeah, they're a though watch, but so could be reality in those times, or so I hear. The acting in some of the scenes was absolutely phenomenal and could convey so much emotion (both positive and negative) that I genuinely felt like those were memories from a past that I've never lived. And the series gives a much better closure to the chracters' plots than the movie, in my humble opinion.

I can recommend "A long hot summer" from 1999 (Pitkä kuuma kesä), finnish movie of guy from city moving to countryside and trying to impress a girl by starting to manager a punkband. Really well done, depicts 90's finnish youthculture well, has many actors from punk and rock scenes of the time.

Hey, great list! You definitely sorted some great ones out. Fun fact one- some of my friends are in Suburbia, and it's based on The Black Hole, which as Tony's ( from the Adolescents) apartment. So, it's also a highly fictionalized version of true events. Fun fact two- back in the Eighties, I did a fanzine that covered punk movies, and a reader of that zine, Zack Carlson, did his own that turned into the Bible of Punk-related movies "Destroy All Movies!!!", which fetches collector prices these days, but is well worth it for total fanatics. So, my pick to add to your list might come off as a bit left field, but if you ever find a copy of either of the "Lovedoll" movies - Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and Lovedolls Superstar I bet you'll like them.

River's Edge, starring Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye, Crispin Glover, Dennis Hopper, & Daniel Roebuck (also in Dudes). The kids here are in that metal-hardcore crossover era, and the film's stylists nail it. Soundtrack features Agent Orange & Wipers, along with Slayer. I don't know of any other movies that even so much as touched on the thrash/punk crossover kids, much less anything that ever took them (us) seriously. This one is worth checking out.

Suburbia was one of my faves. This is England by Shane Meadows is a classic and an important document on how the original black and white working class united Skinhead youth culture was hijacked by racists thugs, it is a story of loss and the need to be wanted, it went on to develop into a tv series that touched on many social issues, so if you think the movie is a one off then the tv series lets you get to see the journey of Shaun and all the other characters including the neo nazi called Combo played by the brilliant Stephen Graham. my favourite ones on this list are Bomb City, This is England and Sing Street, my other favourites I'd really recommend are Good Vibrations, How to Talk to Girls at Parties and London Town. The first one's a good biopic of the 70s Belfast punk scene, the other two are sillier, more surface level ones that have a similar vibe (but more punk) to Sing Street. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb did an amazing job although they were significantly older than Sid and Nancy. They were just 19/20 when they died and the actors I believe were in their late 20s or even early 30s when the movie was made. Still a good depiction of that era. And a young and very unrecognisable (pre many plastic surgeries) Courtney Love appears as a friend of Nancy (I believe). Another movie would be *CBGB* from 2013 with the amazing Alan Rickman as Hilly Kristal.

Green Room was terrifying and brutal. Repo Man and Suburbia were THE punk rock movies in that time. Alex Cox was a repo man in real life, and you'll see a few authentic details, like the brief glimpse of a slide hammer for breaking into cars when Otto opens the briefcase in one scene. You put a heat treated coarse wood screw in the business end, screw it into a locks keyway and use it to pop the core out by hammering the opposite end with the sliding weight on the shaft. An experienced repo man will also have a slim jim and automotive jiggler keysets in his arsenal of tools. Dangerous job. Repo men do often carry guns in the United States. And there were the evil punk rock TV villains on episodes of CHIPS and Quincy! 😏

That episode of CHIPS is the worst representation of L.A. Punks in the history of bad TV
@jamesclark6427
@jamesclark6427 5 ай бұрын
@@lancecox8084 It was comically horrible, as I recall. Quite a long time since I saw it. The evil nihilistic punk villain got to be a TV trope for a bit in the late '70s into the '80s, and was generally absurd. There was a truly hilarious episode of Hunter where he goes "undercover" as one. I don't remember any realistic or authentic representation of anything in TV of that era.

Good list - I subscribed. I recommend you check out these - if you have not seen them: Liquid Sky / Driller Killer/ Richard Kern's You Killed Me First - these are not all about Punk music but you will see a connection to punk in these films for sure.

You should definitely check out "Rude Boy" about a Clash roadie. It really is a more "reality TV" style of movie as it has concert footage of the Clash, a very loose plot about the roadie, and some semi scripted scenes with the band. It's too scripted to be a documentary but it definitely hits that "reality TV" vibe decades before it was a thing. You definitely picked some good movies. If you watch "This is England" that's definitely more of a Skinhead movie than a Punk movie. Same goes for "Made in Britain" with Tim Roth. It definitely helps to do research on Punk back in the late 70s, early 80s and to understand what the Falkland War was about (there are some great documentaries on KZbin about it) and how the Conservative government came in and this was the first thing Margaret Thatcher had to deal with. It also sets the tone for Post Punk in the 80s, but worth the time to understand that element if you like Punk, Post Punk, or any UK made music in the 80s.😎👍✨

Wow you dropped some classics, I'm a child of the 80s, so know most of those and the 90's ones. I'm from the UK so This is England hits home with me, that's how it was in those days, even though I was young at the time, I remember all that stuff, yeah it's a bit rough but at least its gives you a very good idea of how things were, I saw someone mention the TV show in your comments yeah you should watch that too. Tank girl was a comic in the UK, well more like it was a comic inside a bigger comic like how Judge Dredd is in 2000AD. Tank Girl was inside Deadline it was definitely more adult themed stuff, not kiddy superhero stories, it became so popular that like Judge Dredd they made a film, most fans hate both movies but Judge Dredd 90s movie and Tank Girl are guilty pleasures of mine, plus I thought Lori Petty looked so amazing lol. BTW your hairstyle is stunning!

“What to Do in Case of Fire” is a German anarchist punk movie that is worth a mention. One of the actors is a staple in punk/countercultural films from the 90’s-00’s.

I remember quite enjoying Control,about the life and times of Ian Curtis. Beautifullly shot. But ultimately quite sad. I can see why This is England is quite a hard watch if you’re not from the uk, but if you watch all the series ‘86, ‘88 and ‘90, the racist does eventually get his comeuppance. Great list by the way.

I've gotta second the motion for the book "Destroy All Movies." It's out of print and pricey, but my local library was able to get a copy. It blew my mind -- so many punk movies (or movies with punk scenes). I was a fool for not buying that book when it was new.

Love dolls Superstar! Jello Biafra plays the president. It's about an all girl punk band that had the world by the balls but lost it. Now they have to get back together and do it again. Its a sequel but more fun than the original. Great soundtrack. Straight To Hell is also underrated and overhated. Same director as Repo Man. Starring Joe Strummer and Courtney Love. Choc full of cameos. Hope you enjoy these if you haven't seen them!

Great list! I will have to check out Verlierer. Down and Out With The Dolls (2001) is about fictional all-female band in Portland, based on experiences in 90s scene. (Lemmy cameo.) Dinner In America (2022) is romance between misfit girl and antisocial punk guy.

El Calentito, a Spanish film that focuses on a band of young girls, The Sioux, and how they try to get their music forward in the difficult time of political transition, giving their show on the night of the coup d'état in 1981. Everything from a humorous perspective and a wonderful recreation of the scene of those years. Highly recommended for a little entertaining time 🎼🎟

watched at last and a great video of movies a few not seen and was worried that you wouldn't include We Are The Best! Good to see you got a load of of comments supporting and adding to the list. This Is England is a great watch and is more a document of a time than entertainment of the awful tragedy of the infiltration and the downfall of the 80s skinhead movement. Beverly is another short film covering similar subject.

Some good picks some others I'd throw in would be: Sid and Nancy Class of 1999 (I actually prefer this one over Class of 1984). Mad Max 2 (Style wise, I'd consider it Apocalyptic Punk) Doomsday Death Wish 3 VFW Demons 1 and 2 Idle Hands Hardware (More Cyberpunk-Post Apocalyptic but it has cameos with Iggy Pop and Lemmy of Motorhead plus PIL is in the soundtrack)
