പുന്നക്കൽ ദേവി ക്ഷേത്രം

Punnakkal Bhagavathy temple is situated at Elamakkara in Ernakulam district. This temple, believed to be more than 100 years old has Bhagavathy consecrated as Vanadurga. The original kannadi bimbam was consecrated under a Punna tree, open to the sun and the rain, on the southern side of the present temple. Hence the Goddess was also referred to as Nana Durga. Later the Goddess was consecrated inside the sanctum made of coconut fronds in the temple. The temple belonged to the Elangaloor swaroopam of Edapally. In 1973 it was handed over to the local NSS Karayogam. The temple was renovated and reconstructed by the Karayogam. In ancient times there were many Namboothiri houses in the vicinity and they had a Sree Rama temple there. During the attack by Tippu Sultan, this temple was destroyed. According to astrological findings, the remains of the temple are in the pond of the Punnakkal Bhagavathy temple. So, a new temple for Sree Rama was built in the temple premises.
