Ruby was knocked ON the floor in that moment because the momentum of Yang pushing her and Weiss was a ways away in shock. Black was the only one able to rush over in that moment. By the time yang was gone in the yellow puff of partials, Ruby had just barly been able to stand up, as this was all happening in a split second and by the time she was up she was in shock wondering what the hell just happened right before Neo jumped on her. She didnt really have time to prosses what was going on in that situation other than that something more than likely very bad just happend to Yang, but she doesn't know what.

Ok, so as someone else with anxiety and depression I have a counterpoint: Not all mental illness works like anxiety or depression. People with things like factitious disorder or ASPD are pretty much universally experiancing only negative things that make the people with them generally unhappy and sometimes dangerous. I don't think it's helpful to generalize all mental health issues into the same territory where we can't hold people responsible for their actions or ask how their disorders may influence them. In general people needn't be afraid of those deemed "mentally ill" but one can't pretend every diagnosis is the same.

i really hate how people are still whining about Ironwood being a bad guy, and this "hey James" movement. Salem and Ironwood are literally 2 sides of the same coin. they're both doing what they think is right, no matter the cost. they both have an obsession with that one individual who's the bane of their existence; Salem has Ozma, Ironwood has Salem. they both have their own army and don't take too kindly to betrayals. and most of all, they're both obsessed with attaining power and using it for the "greater good." Ironwood was never a good guy to begin with, he was always unstable in the head and his judgements were always clouded. he's CRWBY's Anakin Skywalker, started off as a goody two-shoes, then slowly descended to the dark side with his own army, his DeathStar of a city, and mechanical parts. so there!!!!
@tenofprime3 жыл бұрын
While I would not put him in the same boat as Salem I do agree with his turn not coming out of nowhere, the signs of his paranoia and tendency to use the overkill options were literally shown in his first appearance on screen. he has gradually gotten worse with each appearance but some viewers do not pay enough attention to notice it.

Nothing ever does when it comes to those you care for, ex: Pyrrha and Penny in V3 deaths. I 100% agree with you about Ironwood's Semblance. Even setting aside the comparison to a mental illness, which I think you addressed better than I could, it's not how his Semblance was described, and it wouldn't be good storytelling. We were told that it allows him to strengthen his resolve and carry through with a decision he's made. It doesn't lock him into a course of action so that nothing could possibly talk him out of it. His Semblance might be helping him make such difficult and costly decisions as quickly as he is, but calling him a slave to his Semblance is wrong.

33:51 "That is not a great portrayal of how mental illness is and in a lot of cases that isn't how mental illness works." Yeah well this is a fantasy series and almost nothing that has ever been depicted in this show has ever been a good portrayal of how something in the real world works. Physics in this show isn't how actual physics works. Genetics in this show (inheritance of faunus traits) isn't how actual genetics works. Why would you expect psychology and mental health in this show to be accurate to how they actually work?
@morlock20123 жыл бұрын
It's not an unreasonable and expectation. Good scifi/fantasy tells very human stories in novel and entertaining settings. Really good scifi/fantasy uses the novel settings to explore the human condition in ways not available to realism. But having recognisable human interactions, dilemmas, weaknesses and strengths are what make for good stories. So yes, if a story is trying to be good, and deals with mental illness (outside caricature antagonists), it should do it in a way that's recognisable, 'real'.
@TheRealRightPrice3 жыл бұрын
@@morlock2012 A caricature antagonist is exactly what they turned Ironwood into though. He clearly lost his capacity for reasonable thought early in this season so his turn to is not recognizable as 'real' anyway unless there's some unseen influence happening to his mind, hence why people look to blame his semblance. It's all fans desperate attempts to rationalize poor writing with headcanon. In that same vein of headcanon I'd say comparing his semblance (if passive) to a severe form of mental illness is fine despite it's lack of real accuracy since it's all unrealistic fantasy anyway.
@morlock20123 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealRightPrice ah, I think I misunderstood your earlier comment. I thought you were talking about whether it's reasonable to expect mental illness to be portrayed accurately in a fantasy setting. You were talking about whethet 'this show' could be expected to do so. I suspect, from your reply, that we won't agree on that. Which is fine. I do agree on the headcanon thing though. Badly written or not, the point of the whole atlas arc is to look at isolation, individual strength and 'acceptable losses' as a strategy. Ironwood's choices are essential to his character, to argue he's corrupted by his Semblance is just silly.
@TheRealRightPrice3 жыл бұрын
@@morlock2012 I didn't at all mean to imply that mental illness CAN'T be depicted realistically in a fantasy setting. It absolutely can be, but that doesn't mean it HAS to be. In a fictional world where reality is already drastically different from our own it doesn't make sense to me that any viewer should expect, or demand, that one particular thing should be depicted accurately to how it is in real life. In this case I'm referring to mental illness but it applies to many other things as well. Perhaps I phrased it poorly, but it's the same kind of rebuttal I would give to someone criticizing, for example, Star Wars for unrealistically having sounds in space battles. In RWBY specifically, a show with physics defying soul powered warriors, magic, gods, immortals, animal people, and monsters made out of solid shadow my suspension of disbelief is not broken just because a single character MIGHT be suffering the from something kind of/sort of similar to a mental illness that isn't being depicted quite realistically. "Ironwood's choices are essential to his character, to argue he's corrupted by his Semblance is just silly." I agree with this but only up to a point. I do (in my headcanon) think that Ironwoods semblance is a factor in his fall. I think, like Puns Of Damage here, that Ironwoods semblance is something he has to actively use rather than something passive like Qrows. For me, this makes it less like a mental illness that absolves him of responsibility for his choices and more like a mind altering drug/pharmaceutical that he's using recently to help him deal with the decisions he's had to make and that's why his personality seemed to shift so suddenly towards being cold and non-empathetic once he decided to stop the evacuation of Mantle. In the real world I would see this as a person simply 'steeling their resolve' and 'hardening their hearts' as they make a tough but necessary choice where lives will be lost (see U571 where the captain has to order a man to do something that will cause him to drown but the whole ship and crew will be die if he doesn't). In RWBY however, I think Ironwoods semblance is kind of a cheat that lets him do this easily, effectively suppressing any emotions, thoughts, or sentiments that would get in the way or impede him from following through with a decision he's made. I think when they found out that Salem was right outside the Atlas/Mantle kingdom and he knew he no longer had time for the Amity project or to finish evacuating Mantle, and that the Relic of Creation and therefore the world was at stake, he made the tough but reasonable decision to flee. He'd already saved some of the people of Mantle but the rest would have to be left behind; a difficult choice made for the greater good. That's all on him. He did that, not his semblance. But I do think that's when he started using his semblance, to help him see it through. Kind of like someone in the real world having a ton of work dumped onto them suddenly with a short deadline so they make use of stimulants (coffee, Adderall, or lol cocaine) to help them stay awake and work non-stop for a couple of days to get it done. And just like that example, Ironwoods semblance has some side effects, except mental instability isn't his problem, it's that he becomes TOO STABLE, specifically he becomes unable to adapt to changing circumstances. Really, Ironwood's plan to fly Atlas high into the atmosphere where the grimm can't survive while relying on Atlas's shield to maintain the cities temperature and air pressure was a good plan...until Salem destroyed the Atlas shield and landed on the floating island. At that point Atlas could neither escape her by flying away nor could the people of Atlas (and their farmland/food crops) survive the cold and lack of air in the upper atmosphere anymore, thereby making his initial plan non-viable. Even a man who had hardened himself to the necessity of sacrificing Mantle would have been capable of seeing the need to adapt his strategy to these developments, but Ironwood irrationally stayed the course with his initial plan, and I think that's where any blame that can be put on his semblance comes into play. It didn't force him make the decisions he did, but it did contribute to making him unable to deviate from those decisions later on. But that's just my headcanon. I like Ironwood as a character, but this kind of headcanon is the only way I can rationalize his turn. Otherwise I can only see it as either really bad writing or a deliberate choice by roosterteeth to turn him into a caricature of a villain.
@morlock20123 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealRightPrice wow, that's a reply. I'm on my phone so sorry if this is really brief. I don't think you're unclear at all - like I said, I think I just misread your first post. And you're right, Mettle is at most something Ironwood is over-dependent on. His angry outbursts suggest it was 'off' at that time. I don't think it distorted his thinking, but may be suggestive of where the writers think his thinking is... Flawed? Vulnerable is probably a better word. A little too quick to sacrifice something to gain an upper hand. You're right, his goal was never crazy. Short term, keeping the staff from Salem makes total sense. Long term, that's a whole other conversation. But it isn't a mental illness thing.

It would be truly stunning and and brave of RT to actually kill off Yang, a main character, and I really wish they would, however, they are not that clever and so she plot armor, (like Weiss getting speared by Cinder in Vol 5). So my reaction was of mild amusement. Anyhoo, I got the impression of Yang fell though the barrier that defines the area of the portal system when she flickers and winks out. Yeah, Yang is not dead, just MIA, dammit. As far a Ruby not doing anything, remember that sequence was in slow motion, by the time Ruby understood wtf happened, Neo was back in her face attacking again. Ruby just standing there in shock is a perfectly reasonable and predictable reaction. Jacque got off easy when Ironwood killed him. He should have survived and found himself divorced, penniless (lien-less?), and unable to get a job except as a Shopkeep's stock boy. He derives to be humiliated. (I'd been reading to much r/prorevenge.) But of course, RT is not that clever.

@@blackvial No, we acknowledge it. But we also acknowledge all of the terrible misguided things he’s done consistently throughout the entire show. We acknowledge that despite his best intentions and capacity to do the right thing, he was a very flawed individual who has been gradually slipping further and further away from morality and responsibility. He was so paranoid, in this episode he literally admits to always be expecting betrayal as opposed to trusting his allies. He was self-righteous, always believing he was in the right, that all his actions, no matter how cruel or destructive, were justified, and that made him unwilling to compromise or accept others’ viewpoints and ideas. Sure, once in a blue moon he gets it right, does something good for someone else, but it doesn’t erase his worst qualities or actions. Everyone is capable of doing good things AND bad things, Hazel spent most of his life killing Huntsmen for his misguided revenge before choosing to sacrifice himself for others, including the man he hated most. That one heroic act is hardly atonement for his crimes but at least in the end he chose to get over himself and his pain and for once do the right thing. As for Ironwood, it was clear from the moment he shot Oscar that he would never recognise his faults, his fears, his mistakes, and that he’d double down even harder on his worst and most selfish ideas. He abandoned his humanity, which was something he himself admitted he was thinking about doing in Worst Case Scenario.

@@CABRALFAN27 A: The whole scene was in slow motion, except that Blake was able to run to the edge and throw a line at Yang in the time it took Ruby to stand up. B: Ruby wasn't occupied with Neo because we see her moving towards the edge on foot before Neo ever engages her, plus we see her reacting to Yang going over the edge in the split-screen shot. C: Yeah, she reacted sub-optimally by forgetting that she can fly. In this one specific instance, she forgot to use the ability that she has been using quite liberally throughout the past two volumes, including in this very fight, for no clearly conveyed reason.

If team RWBY and crew had half a brain cell between them they could have saved both the people and the chunk of land they live on by just making the portals lead to Atlas and then flying Atlas away like Ironwood wanted once the people were all there.

That would still leave the rest of Remnant high and dry, though. The biggest flaw with Ironwood's plan wasn't necessarily the abandonment of just Mantle, as bad as that was, but rather that, by taking Atlas into the sky, he was simply abandoning _Remnant_ as a whole, leaving Salem to wipe out the other Kingdoms, take their Relics, and then probably smite Atlas out of the sky with the Relic of Destruction. The faults in Ironwood's plan were never just moral, but also logical, being based entirely on the assumption that Salem wouldn't be able to reach Atlas if it went high enough.

@@CABRALFAN27 how would taking Atlas high up into the atmosphere be abandoning the rest of Remnant to destruction? That doesn't make any sense. Making Atlas both mobile and secure, as well as reestablishing global communication with the Atlas tower, doesn't at all mean he's abandoning the rest of Remnant as a whole. How did you even get that idea? Also, what moral faults were there in his original plan? His plan originally was to save everyone in both cities before flying away. Salem's attack forced him to make a hard choice to flee but that doesn't make it an immoral choice. The choices later, after he inexplicably lost his mind, are the only morally faulty ones. The only practical fault of his original plan was the assumption that flying higher than grimm could survive would somehow prevent immortal Salem herself from magically flying her ass up there to do her thing personally. After that his later plans are full of logical faults, again due to him inexplicably losing his mind. Ex: flying Atlas high into the atmosphere was only ever a viable plan because the city shield would protect it from the cold and lack of air, something Ironwood himself said when he came up with the idea. Problem is he crazily stuck to that plan even after Salem destroyed the city shield and it's generators. At that point that plan would have killed everybody on the floating island. Even if he'd fully evacuated everyone from Mantle onto Atlas, that plan stopped being viable as soon as those shield generators were destroyed.
