Finnish Air Force’s F/A-18 Solo Display at RIAT in 2019
Ilmavoimien F/A-18 Hornet-soolo palkittiin kahdella palkinnolla Royal International Air Tattoo -lentonäytöksessä Isossa-Britanniassa heinäkuussa 2019. Kapteeni Arto Uksosken lentämälle soololle annettiin lentonäytöksen parhaan yksittäisen esityslennon (Best Individual Flying Display) Sir Douglas Bader Trophy -palkinto. Ilmavoimien Hornet-soolo sai tunnustuksen toista kertaa peräkkäin, sillä viime vuonna palkinto myönnettiin kapteeni Lauri Mäkiselle. Lisäksi soolo sai RIAT-lentonäytöksen ystävien (Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo) parhaaksi arvioimalle suoritukselle (Best Overall Flying Demonstration) myönnettävän As The Crow Flies Trophy -palkinnon.

The Finnish Air Force F/A-18 Solo Display flown by Captain Arto Ukskoski was awarded with the Sir Douglas Bader Trophy for best individual flying display at the Royal International Air Tattoo in July 2019. This was the second year in a row, as Captain Lauri Mäkinen received the same trophy in 2018. In addition, Captain Ukskoski was awarded with the As The Crow Flies Trophy for the best overall flying demonstration as judged by the Friends of the Royal International Air Tattoo.
The solo includes several high angle of attack manoeuvres - see the award-winning display from above and fly with Captain Ukskoski!

When the Finns participated in Air Show events for the first time with a new F / A-18 Hornet fighter. Many pilots from other countries' air forces were said to have been amazed at the skillful way in which Finnish pilots fly in a variety of slow and fast situations in various challenging situations. It is said that the control and software of the aircraft's avionics were changed in Finland to be better than it was originally in the US Air Force. At the Alaska RED FLAG 2019, everyone praised the Finns as highly qualified and professional pilots. Great!

Couple of mistakes here: US Air Force never used F/A-18 of any kind - maybe in an aggressor role, but surely not deployed. And it's a pretty much known fact that almost all display teams have their custom FCS (among other modifications). Finnish Hornet display is amazing non the less, not sure if i like that one or the Swizz Hornet's display better.. both are amazing!

Maybe the airframe is, but if so this jet right here received some heavy upgrades - last Block 2 Rhino was delivered to the US Navy in 2020..

@@almightyIrie yeah airframe is manufactured in 1995. It has the mid life upgrade package 2 in 2016 and mlu1 in if I remember correct in 2007-2008. and lots of servicing annually and few upgrades wich cannot be discussed in public. I retired in 2018.

@@almightyIrie yeah. Finnish pilots retire from age 45 to 47. 20-23 years of service. Airplanes don't retire. They reach maximum life beyond cheap repair and maintenance. You can retire or become instructor it's up yours. But you still are a reservist if war comes. Up to age 65. If more than a lieutenant. Your reservist accommodation has no upper limit. FA 18 has it too it's 67000feet been there done that... Keep care.

This pilot is a beast. He seemed immune to the excruciating g- accelerations all along the display. It was a really tough display on the body. Well, having already watched the display from a ground camera getting to watch it from an in- cockpit camera was amazing. The footage talks volumes of its own. Nothing more to say other than hope to watch them display again in 2020 so that we manage to find out what they've got under the sleeve in order to stun us all again next year. Superb demonstration, outstanding vid, phenomenal performance.

I believe those maneuvers are in the 3-6G range, not particularly high in terms of fighters, BUT those maneuvers are really awesome, and rarely performed in a Hornet in a low-level show. Great pilot. Looking forward to see him again.

@@johnraina4828 Well Im not the one to evaluate which one offers the best value for our money and which isnt too expensive :D Personally I have soft spot for Eurofighter just based on its looks and maneuverability, but I wouldnt mind Gripen either as its the most affordable one and offers good value for its price. Super Hornet might be 3rd best option in my eyes because its just evolution of the fighters we now have, so moving to them would be quite simple. F35 I feel would be too expensive, especially regarding operating costs and Dassault Rafale in my understanding has its entirely own French systems that would most taken use to, so it would be last on my list.

Hei, Minua kiinnostaa onko Hornetissa liikkeitä rajoittava tietokone aktiivinen lentoesityksen aikana? Mielestäni kone pystyy yllättävän korkeaan kohtauskulmaan (cobra liike) ja muutenkin liikehdintä on ajoittain sellaista mitä vain nähdään koneissa joissa on liikkuva suihkusuutin (thrust vectoring) kuten SU-30 MK1 koneessa. Olisi myös kiinnostava tietää tullaanko ensimmäisen käyttövuoden aikana näkemään lentonäytöstä uudella F-35 koneella vai pitääkö ohjaajien saada tietty määrä lentotunteja ennen kuin tämä on mahdollista. Kiitos vastauksista.

Hornettien "rauhanajan" maksimit on ollut aikaisemmin 7.5G. Viimeisessä MLU päivityksessä koneen joitain liikerajoituksia on poistettu, mutta onko niitä G-rajoja? Kai joku tietää... Noita tiukkoja korkean alfa-kulman kääntöjä voi nykyään näköjään tehdä. Alkaa näyttämään jo naapurin SU koneiden lentonäytöksiltä.

Miten kovaa kone menee hidas lento -liikkeen aikana?

Riippuu hyvin pitkälti koneen painolastista. F-18 on käsittääkseni suunniteltu jo lähtökohtaisestikin matalalla tapahtuvaan hidaslentoon ja sen mitä tutkimalla sain selville, niin täydessä lastissa Hornetin sakkausnopeus 30 asteen kulmassa on about 135 solmua (~250km/h). Tuossa lentonäytösvarustuksessa mennään jo pelkän painon takia varmaankin alle tuon 135 solmun nopeuksiin melko reippaasti.

It will be interesting how FiAF will fly the F-35. It's no secret that Finns have an advanced domestic made datalink system in the Hornets which is in some ways better than the Nato Link 16. It will be interesting once these guys will fly the F-35 with all nanny modes off, as they did with the Hornets.
