Hiw do i introduce my new puppy that we get to pick up in 3 more sleeps, to our older chi/shitzu mix. Qe also will have a 5 hrs drive back to bring him home. How do we deal with the truck ride with a new puppy and dog?

Oh wow!!!! I’m so excited for you to bring your new baby home in just 3 more sleeps!!! 😛 those might be 3 sleepless nights! 😍 So first of all for the long drive home. Make sure you bring with you potty pads, a roll of paper towels, baby wipes, a water/food dish, and some finely chopped chicken, and a super soft bed. Depending on the age and personality/social development of your puppy he may be very nervous on that long drive home. Leaving their mama is one of the most stressful times in their life so you will need to do as much as you can to make him feel comfortable and secure on that long drive home. Hopefully there are at least two of you making the trip so that one person can be caring for the baby on the drive. I recommend you hold him on your lap, in his super soft bed the whole way home. Talk to him softly and see if he will nibble a few bites of chicken from your fingers. If he learns immediately that irresistible things come from your fingers, it will be the foundation of trust he needs to build on for all his new family members. They usually learn to trust and love the person who feeds them most often but it’s a process. Comfort him if he’s nervous. The sound of the car might scare him and he may even get car sick. Give him lots of comfort and reassurance and soothing baby talk. I don’t recommend letting hun go potty on the ground Outside so if he needs to go potty just put a pad it on the floorboard or seat and let him go. Sometimes messes happen so that’s why the paper towels ans baby wipes come in handy. And now for the other dog. I do not recommend you introduced them for the first couple of days. The new puppy needs some time to adjust and feel secure with just his human family members. Once he is settled in, I recommend you introduce them for a short visit in the main part of the house. I would get down on the floor with them but don’t hold the baby while they meet because he is likely to react by wanting to be protective over you. That’s not his job so you want him to know from the start he has to be friends with everyone. Let him and the older dog sniff each other while you’re near by on the floor. I wouldn’t be too concerned if they aren’t best friends right away. Sometimes it takes a little time but usually they end up loving each other ❤️ I wish you and your sweetie pie the very best 🙏🏻
