I recommend getting two. We brought two lovely havy brothers into our home and they entertain us and each other to no end. Its unbelievable and not as much work as you might think. They dont suffer separation anxiety when we leave them because they always have each other. There is some anxiety when theyre apart from one another but we're working on that. Just amazing members of our family. I recommend kennels for inside time occasionally and sleeping. They love their's.

Our girl, Jasmine, is about 14 months old. Didn't do a good job with crate training, but she likes sleeping in bed and laying on back of the couch looking out the window. Loves to cuddle on your chest when you lay down, but by your legs when she gets tired. Didn't care for the snuggle puppy stuff until she was older and started playing with it, missing an ear now. Doesn't like the bed we got her, she likes blankets. Never liked pee pads, just had to watch her for signs she needed to go out, she sits by the front door when she needs. Still have times she pee's on the floor, but more when we forget to take her out. Harness vest on most of the day and doesn't mind clothing when her mom dresses her up. Heavy chewer on toys, need the strong soft fabric ones. She'll chew through the normal ones. Loves to meet new people and pretty good, but have to watch from pulling whenever she sees anyone. Working on that whenever I can. Very little barking, only when she sees someone leave or if some animals nearby are acting strange (horse near by running, or something in the yard that shouldn't be)

Keep those dog strollers! Some older dogs (like mine) can develop various medical issues and it comes in so handy. Take it with you, while your dog is walking on lead, and you have it with you if they seem sore or tired.

This was such a helpful video! I’m getting a yorkie this Saturday and I’m racking my brain trying to make sure I get everything I will need. I have had a dog before, but unfortunately she passed away at age 11 on thanksgiving. So it’s been a while since I’ve dealt with a dog in its puppy stage. I have pretty everything you mentioned, so I feel a little more relaxed now 😅

I’m really glad it was helpful to you! So sorry for your loss - it’s so hard. Puppies and puppy parents can get by with less stuff than I mentioned in this video, so I’m sure you’ll be just fine! Best of luck with your new baby.

We're picking up our new 8-week old Sheltie boy, Åska, on Saturday. This is the 4th Sheltie we've had so I'm experienced with them. We currently have a 3-year old boy Sheltie named Sully, so he's getting a brother. A few things we've found helpful: 1. A cover blanket for the crate. Especially when we're travelling, we drape the blanket lightly over the front door so the pup is feeling cocooned in there. It helps with travel anxiety. 2. If you can't get the Snuggle Puppy, any big soft stuffed animal works great. We got Sully a pink rabbit when we brought him home. He loves the thing to this day. He's pulled off the ears and tail and it's looking rather ragged, but he loves it. It's a comfort thing, when we've had to send him to the "Doggie Spa" (the kennel/groomer) like last week when we were on a cruise, his rabbit is a help. And he will bring it out in his mouth to tell his daddy to go out and play with him. Sully doesn't fetch, he plays keep away. With the rabbit. 3. A travel case. We've got one that comes with containers for food, place for a bottle of water, a couple of collapsable bowls, and room for toys. It also has a fold down cover to put the bowls on so you don't have food mess all over the hotel room when feeding. Everything goes in there and it's one thing (like a diaper bag) to grab and go. 4. We have a harness with the handle on the back. It's one Sully puts his head through and then buckles under and up on the sides of his body. The handle is very good for picking him up into the van (before he could jump). We have him in the back seat. We went ahead and fastened the seat belt, then put a carbiner (a d-ring with a spring--usually used with climbing gear, but you can get lightweight ones) on the shoulder part. Once the dog is in the van, we just clip the carbiner to the handle on his harness and he's safe, but can move around to sit up or even jump on the window to say hi. 5. A doggie door. This is totally worth the cost if you live in your own home with a back yard or even a small patio, as long as you have a fence. We have the dog in the harness with the leash, pass the leash through the dog door, call the dog, and pull gently to get the dog out the door. Then reverse the action once you've walked the dog through the yard, stopping to smell any spot where the other dog goes to the bathroom. Do that a few times and the dog will get the idea that the potty is out there. Easy training. Before we got the dog door, we had a couple of strings of brass Christmas bells. Tied the one on the inside of the door and one on the outside. Take the dog to the door, put his nose to the bells and move them so they ring. Praise the dog, then take him outside to the spot where he's to go. Then bring him back to the door and repeat the process to ring the bell and then open the door and let him in. Again, it's usually just a bit and they get the hang of ringing to go out. Hope this helps a new puppy owner.

I really enjoyed this video. And you are so relaxed and personable. My dog (16, go girl) died this month and their will be a puppy in the future. I liked seeing the crate with the divider, I’d never seen that before and it just got a quick glimpse and had to rewind. The ‘portable’/softer-sided crates, we’ve had great luck with with our last 2 dogs. I live in the UK so will have to do some substitute searching. Oh, kudos for mentioning trachea issues in small dogs. As I found out this doesn’t only apply to “toy” breeds. and I feel you regarding the 30ft. Lead. Even if you feel you can trust your dog on recall there may be loose dogs around which don’t and it gives you a chance if something should happen. 🐾🐾

I’m not really loyal to any one leash! I’m more interested in weight, length, and material. I bought her most lightweight leash at CountryMax - might just take a poke around your local pet store.

YES! We (and Pistachio) love our Diggs crate. So easy to clean too. We put a pad insert in it from HomeGoods to save some money on the Diggs crate pad. I will warn you, it's not a great on-the-go crate. We use a lightweight crate for travelling. But for home, it's so well mad, comfortable for P, and looks great in our home.

I'm having such a hard time choosing a breed and havanese is on the list. And there sadly aren't too many videos on their pros and cons, atleast not made by somebody who actually owns the breed. What was the main reason for you to choose a havanese over other breeds? And are there any big cons that new owners should heavily consider before getting their puppy? Btwwww I can't handle how beautifull Pistachio is, she has such beautifull coat ; - ;
@backtobreeality
@backtobreeality Жыл бұрын
This is a great video idea - I will try to make a more comprehensive video on pros/cons from a Havanese owner's perspective. Off the top of my head, biggest pros are no shedding/smell/drool and they're super trainable/smart. Biggest con is anxiety associated with being separated from their humans, because they're so loyal. Not a good dog breed to spend the whole day away from.

@@backtobreeality Ah yeah, that's the price we pay for an extremly attached dog, but thankfully leaving a dog behind won't be something happening in my home, so it would managable. And I would love to see a video like that! Getting to know a breed way more in-depth than just articles filled with generic and repetetive lines for all breeds would be a nice change lol You are really interesting to listen to
