@@OurTribeofMany You have hit the nail on the head with Dogs...consistency! My Ozzy Boy (who is my username image) taps his paw on the glass door to let us know he needs to go out, and through the night (as he's older now and not very well) whimpers to alert me so I can get up to let him out. Please don't let anybody make you feel bad for putting a leash on Ness if it makes it easier to catch her, keeping her safe is what's important - it's obviously not bothering her as much as some viewers. Ozzy was a rescued dog who was picked up by the RSPCA on the streets. He was also missed by inches of a car one time not long after we got him - when he bolted from a park and ran into the road. We couldn't let him off leash for a walk for a few years because he would get so excited and just run run run with no sense of danger. The day will come when Ness is matured and trained I'm sure. I feel like she's a dog full of mischief who loves to push all boundaries ha ha - but that's why they are SO cute right?! Keep on keeping on - it pays off, trust me! Lots of love x

Our trainer taught us to use a word, such as “look” to get the dog to stop. It will give you a few seconds to either grab her or to stop her from danger. Train her in the house with little treats. Show her the treat and then put it up between your eyes. When she looks at it, give it to her and say look. Don’t say look until she does the action. Same with sit. Do many many repetitions for many many days. Then when she runs say “look”. She should stop because she wants a treat. It really works! It’s important not to use her name and to use the same word, because the dog hears her name all day in different tones and won’t respond to her name. Good luck!

LOOOOVE this!!! This will sound weird, but hang with me for a sec. I don't have any kids of my own, but am close with my sister's kids. When I visited them in TX from WI my sister gave me the amazing chance to potty train my niece while my sister and her husband were at work for the day. I hadn't read the books or read the blogs. I received a few quick tips and a high-five as my sister and BIL left for the day. Setting timers for 15-minute increments, I hovered and waited and coached and praised and eventually hung back till the afternoon when my darling niece didn't even want me to be in the bathroom with her anymore. Then not even in the hall near the door. It was ASTONISHING. We made a few accommodations going forward, like always making sure to keep a change of clothes for her, always going potty before leaving the house and upon arriving anywhere... but I tell ya that was one of the best days of my life. How (oddly) lucky am I?!?

The leash on Nessa is a well known training technique. Don't worry about it. You are right it is for her safety. It is also good for in the house if she were to be a jumper or getting into things, etc...you can grab the leash, step on it, etc as needed. It's not uncommon or cruel at all. And the bell! ha! I tried so hard with my dog. I got one of those office desk type bells. Tried to get her to tap it with her paw. Yeah, I hope Nessa is more willing! ha! I had such high hopes. Good luck with her. She is so sweet. I love watching her progress!

Its also better to get a body harness type collar thing instead of a regular one . The regular collars can hurt their throat when they pull. The body stule goes around their legs and chest and gives you more control of the dog and is safe.

I was blessed to be able to afford an in home trainer for my Rottie. We were taught to use a "long leash" in situations that might present danger to her. It would allow us to let her be free, but still stop her if needed. Bolting out open doors was one of her issues. Being able to step on that leash as she was running out the door saved her more times than I can say.

Small dogs have problems with "Tracheal Collapse". Talk to your vet. We were taught to use a harness; not a collar. Our pomeranian used to run so fast that we could not catch her. One day, she ran down our street and out of the neighborhood towards a busy street. My daughter was so angry with her that she put her into the laundry room and put up the gate. Every time that she would run off, we would yell "getting the gate". So, she would stop and roll on her back to be picked up when she heard the phrase. "Getting the gate" soon became, "get the gate" and that became our way of disciplining her. She had an interesting personality and to this day we tell stories about her. Of course, like humans, each dog has a unique personality. My experience was years ago. I don't know if my story helps you, but I enjoy reminiscing. LOL!! I enjoy watching your videos. Blessings!!

I travel a lot so when I got my Cocker Spaniel puppy I used the phrase "hurry up, go potty outside" when we went out. Each time he went, I said it, then praised him. He is now 7yrs old and when we travel and stop I can use that phrase and within 30 seconds to a minute he's going to the bathroom. Since we live in the UP of Michigan, this helps when the weather is bad/super cold to get him out and back ijn quickly. Good luck!

We got a our German shephard puppy at the end of August and can very much relate to the running away. Our trainer taught us to get her attention when she gets out, even for a second and then run the other way. It starts a new game of chase the human instead of the other way around. Its been a life saver. She instantly turns around and chases us and then we are able to catch her so much easier.

Both of our sons got their dog bells from Amazon. They're lighter, you can hear the bell much better. And YES! THEY ABSOLUTELY USE THEM! The bells are screwed into the molding by the doors they go out of the most often. You could still easily screw it into your little crate. Good luck with the pup! I'd say to those who have a problem with your pup having her leash on, "Remember, alive and dragging a leash is much better than dead with her leash in the house!" Happy holidays to you and your family! We have an escape artist, too. We feel your pain! That may not leave her. It hasn't in our dog. He was a stud in a puppy mill. His fight or flight is too strong in him. We put doggie diapers on him and have for...13 years now! We give him grace because he deserves it after the terrible 2-3 years he spent in that horrible puppy mill.

I wrote a potty training guide when I had a child care center. am a believer when you decide to start training, keep training. Don’t use diapers back and forth. Big girl panties or big boy underwear and only a pull up at nap. Then eventually no pull up at nap time. Don’t give huge cups of drinks and have a schedule if you can. Loved the video

My mother had professional dog trainer come to her home to work with them & their shepherd. To train Nessa to stay on property, leash walk her around the perimeter and any spaces she's allowed...when you reach the boundaries, tug the leash firmly and say "no" and walk in a permitted direction. Do this a lot...obviously I mean your big kids should do this... you have enough to do 👍 Work on training her to come & stay inside, then move those skills outside, with treats for reinforcement. Putting in place boundary lines, come command and stay command will keep her safe. Wonderful that she stayed close by when she escaped without notice 👍👍 Love all your videos. I'm an almost empty-nester, have 6 sons and a daughter. My youngest is almost 19, so I really love watching your littles 🧡

Keeping Nessa on a leash is actually great! I teach a puppy class and we recommend that to all puppies. It’s also an easy way to correct her if needed. Small breed dogs can also take a bit longer to potty train. As a dog trainer it took me 3 months to fully potty train my Pomeranian, and I am very very consistent. Our family has had 9 dogs over the last 35 years. Outside is the word we've used for them all! At first you can put potty pads on the floor, 2 or 3, work it down to 1 pad for accidents, while still taking outside often. Just takes 2-3 weeks & very well trained! Lots of praise excites them to please you, same with kids, and a tiny treat as well. Once they get it, they won't have an accident in the house unless a medical issue.

I love how the children are helping with the Thanksgiving meal, they’re great kids! Btw about Nessa's potty training, it's best to start taking her out at specific times every day. For most dogs 3x times a day is best (e.g. 7am in the morning etc. 1pm in the afternoon, 6pm at night), then they will get used to the schedule, they will realize that they have to wait to be taken out to go their business and they won't have accidents anymore. Worked with my two dogs :)

Sara, we had an American Bulldog puppy that I house trained in a few days. We spoke to Pet Smart that offered training (probably not now during Covid). We bought a sliding glass door partition that has a doggy door built in. We put puppy pads by the door that the door he was going to use to go out. And we put a few pennies in a soda can. Every time Indiana Jones had an accident we would take our Indiana to the accident, tell him no, Shake the can once, and lead him to the puppy pads. When he mastered the puppy pads with treat incentive, we moved the puppy pads right outside the doggy door. He was scared at first but once he saw my head stick through it a couple times he was fine. He used that door for about 6 months. We had a good fenced in yard and so no one had to get up in the middle of the night. Then my husband made a real doggy door in the wall and we sold the partition to another new puppy owner. Please think about having Nessa chipped so if she gets out and lost they can find her home. And one last thing about dogs. Keep a very close eye on Nessa’s gums, we lost Indiana at 7 because of leukemia. His only telltale sign was his gums went from a vibrant pink to grey overnight. And last but not least those bells are cute, what do you think about getting 10 of them and letting the kids each decorate one and as they grow up and leave your house for their own they will have each have a ornament to start a new tradition with their kids. Just a thought. I love your family. So adorable. Happy Holidays!

Good job Destiny!! My kids have all been potty trained by 2-ish but it took a lot longer than one day!! Probably Nessa is associating areas of the house with being ok to go since she's had many accidents and now you'll have to help her relearn. Crate training is what we've always done with our dogs. And taking them out frequently... Soon after they eat or drink, whenever they're excited, and at certain intervals of time. Also, you might want to consider just offering her water at specific times of day, rather than leaving it down all the time. If they don't go pee when they're outside, they have to go in their crate ... and then you try again in a little while. And reward them with praise when they "go" outside. My first three dogs potty trained very quickly... Our last was an older puppy and he had more trouble, because he already had bad habits. He would pee when he got excited. So we learned to take him out the second he got excited (and also scolded him as soon as he started to pee in the house, and put him outside immediately) eventually he learned. Also it helps, to use a special cleaner that removes the smell of pee, because dogs will likely go again if they can smell faintly where they've gone before

When I was teaching primary school (five year olds) I had so many children that had younger children and I was amazed at how many parents asked me for advice for potty training the siblings (there was some confusion as I fostered children but they were school age). After my first year teaching I thought that I had better do some research. My classroom before and after school was always run with an open door policy (so many of my fellow teachers were surprised that I ran my classroom as most would only see parents if they made an appointment) as I saw my classroom as a community. Anyway I explained that I'd not had experience as I only fostered children who were school age. The research I did basically adviced that every child is ready to potty train in their own time and it is much easier if you wait until the child had some sort of understanding the process and desired outcome while rewarding the child (praise, a bit of candy, some coins or whatever is right for you to give your own child). So many parents would only give a reward if they were successful but it's purpose is to have a positive affirmation after every attempt as they will start to associate how they feel to needing to go potty. You did it perfectly Sarah. It's so obvious that you really know each and everyone of your children. Xx

I have a bell that hangs on the door knob. That works great. You might be able to find one right now from Xmas decorations. I bought my 20 lb Turkey on Monday and cooked it Wednesday night. We had to thaw our Turkey in the Sink in Water to be able to cook it overnight. I used the Trisha Yearwoods No Baste No Fail Turkey. I place the turkey in a roasting pan with 2 cups of stock or water. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Place turkey in the pan and cover tightly with lid or 2 pieces of heavy duty foil. You need it covered tightly to hold in the steam. For a 10 to 13 lb turkey bake for 1 hour. For a 14 to 17 lb turkey bake 1.5 hours. For anything 18 lbs to 22 lbs cook it 2 hours. Turn off the oven. DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR. Go to bed. In 4 to 6 hours or when the oven door is completely cool the turkey is fully cooked, Very Moist and Tender and Delicious. This allows you to have a free oven to cook all your side dishes by having the turkey cooked. It works wonderfully. After Xmas look for marked down turkeys. It is a great option to cook for Sunday dinner and have cheap sandwich meat all week. I bought 3 small ones on Sat after Thanksgiving. I will by several more plus marked down hams and prime ribs the day after Xmas. I bought 4 prime rib roasts last Xmas for less than $3 a lb. We have used them for special occasion dinners all year. Maybe if you have freezer space you can save some money on your grocery bill.

Our puppy used to run out the door when we first got him. What we ended up doing for a period of time (while we were training him not to run out the door) was to just manage which doors the kids were allowed to use as they exited or entered the house. I stopped letting the kids use any door other than the front door. Our front door has a screen door with a self-closing spring, and then I also put a butterfly spring door closer on the main door, so it closes automatically and can't be left open, and doesn't need to be pulled shut. We still had to watch the dog and keeping a leash on is a fantastic idea, but having 2 self-closing doors the kids had to go through, really prevented A LOT of escapes, because it was much harder for the dog to sneak out when the door is automatically closing right behind the kids, as opposed to when they had to pull the door shut and frequently forgot to do that, or just weren't fast enough.
@myhomeremedies3 жыл бұрын
I should also add, that we have a small portion of our backyard that is fenced and that is where the dogs use the potty and can run around. I actually ended up tying the gates on that fence shut, so the kids don't actually go through those gates (and can't leave them open which WOULD happen) and if they want to play in the fenced area, they have to go through the house and out the back deck (which is also how the dogs go outside). If they want to play in the big, unfenced portion of our yard, they have to go out the front door and run around to the back. Not sure if that makes sense, but it was all about managing which doors they use or don't use to minimize the chance of the dog sneaking out or a gate/door being left open. We did this in addition to training.

What worked for my dog for potty training is use a combo of bell and training treats. The training treats are a small pill sized treat. My dog is also a Teddy Bear like Nessa. Smart dog but stubborn. Take her outside, wait for a potty and immediately give a treat with verbal praise. Puppies have a short term memory. My dog is now 6 years old and he still gets a treat but can wait until he comes back in the house. I also used a treat to train him to use his bell. Sometimes he rings his bell and sometimes he will come up to us and fake sneeze. He has been a great addition to my family.

Hi Sarah, dogs will never soil their crate unless they are sick. It is there their safe place/den. Never hesitate to put Nessa in her crate. Take her out immediately and give her a tiny treat when she does her business. You can buy some healthy training treats on Amazon or at Pet Smart. We can tell our dog to go “pee pee” or “poop” and he will do it on command. We have found the treat system works great for dogs as it does for kids getting potty trained, lol. Best of luck. I would also get Nessa micro chipped. It could save a lot of stress if she escapes. She does need to learn some basic commands like sit, stay, touch (our dog will come touch our hand). It helps to keep her safe. It has been my personal observation that girl dogs are harder to train than boys. We have had both and our girl was much more challenging, lol. She simply didn’t care to “please” as much as our males. Always enjoy your videos. You family is so amazing and truly blessed 🙏🏻❤️

Always love your videos. When we were potty training our dog we used VERY EXCITABLE VERBAL rewards. Our neighbors probably thought we were crazy..lol. IF we rewarded her with a "treat" it was a piece of her own kibble (dog food). We didn't want her to get in the habit of ringing the bell to go outside to get a special treat. We saved those other types of treats for other types of training..like not barking when the door bell rang. Sorry for the long explanation. Hope it helps and good luck.

Past 2 days I have actually got my 1yr old to sit on her potty before a morning bath and she got to poop in the potty- then she peed on the floor haha, I figure we can start practicing before her baths- she typically gets 2 baths. One in the morning and 1 in the evening because we do cloth diapers and I just feel like a morning bath helps prevent diaper rash. Thanks for the tips on potty training. The key with dogs is to have an eye on them constantly (hard with such a big family) and once you see them circle around for a spot- take them out and high praise/cuddle/treat. My dog was scratching at the door on the 3rd day. The bell is a great idea, I've never used it.

I saw on a YT channel that giving them a treat IMMEDIATELY, even “midstream “ if possible 😜 is important because they can forget so easily what they did if you wait until you go back in the house so always go outside with treats on hand.

Yup, jingle bell on twine or something on door handle. My little schnauzer wouldn't have been able to ring that bell, but the jingle bell she just nudged with her nose. Also test the pup on the deck with someone blocking stairs. And treat everytime she comes back to your command at the door. Use consistent words (hard with kids). Once they get used to running they just get faster! 🐕 🐕

My little dog is also an escape artist. It took a few weeks to get better. What I did was go to the door and open it a little bit but make her sit. Once she does, give her a treat. Repeat every time you open a door to outside. This way she associates opening the door with sitting and getting a treat. Even when you want her to go in the backyard, make her sit and wait with the door open before saying “okay” which then allows her to go outside and play. FYI our pups are the same age ☺️

"Peaceful, mostly, not all, some..." 😂 I'm glad the fridge thing worked out, I need to organize mine better. It was something of revelation to me to realize I can't just organize something once and expect it to stay that way, lol.

so after potty training Nessa - recall training - set the timer for every 15 mins and call her with excitement and when she comes give her a treat and it's only needs to be a tiny piece of chicken because she is only a tiny dog like the size of the end of your pinky finger - training dog is like training children takes a minute but so worth it as you will have Nessa because she is a little dog for 15-17 years so train her now on how you want her to be it is worth it and the lead on her is perfect while training as you can stand on it to stop her because it is a long way down for an adult to get that little girl by the collar

With dogs (puppies) and cats that we have had over the years we would start training the day we got them. It seems that once they start going the bathroom in the house they would often go back to that smell and regress. Anyway, we never used treats but just consistently took them out every thirty minutes and said “potty” each time. They were all trained in one or two days. From then on they would go to the door when they needed to go. If we weren’t in the room when they were at the door to be let out they would come find us or bark. We would say potty and they would take us to the door. Worked every time with no accidents. I know you can’t go back to the day you got her so it may take a little longer. Good luck.

I'm so impressed by the children's love for the kitchen. Micah and Belle have beat this middle aged woman who has never attempted to make a pie... GREAT JOB!!! So proud of them!! How about a challenge and making a cheese flan, my favorite!! (I've never made that either...lol) Mom and Dad, you're doing a great job with the children. God bless.

Well done Destiny 💕 as for Nessa, I have an almost 4 year old dog and she will run any opportunity especially if she sees another dog (she cannot control the urge to socialise) I ended up training everyone in the house to never leave a door open. House training her was easier. Every time she woke from a nap or drank water, ate food or finished playing, I would take her outside straight away and would stay there until she went, then she was given lots and lots of praise whilst using the keyword ie good girl “potty”. Hope this helps

Bell training Nessa shouldn't be hard at all. It's the perfect time to get jingle bells for your door. Even just a large, single, jingle style bell (2") on a rope can be moved from place to place with you. Everywhere you go should have some place to hang a single bell. Keep up the great work!! Take care and stay safe!!

The bkground music to my life is praise and worship music. It’s awesome that ur kid is doing well at potty training. We potty trained our dog in a day but it was started b4 we got him as we couldn’t pick him up till he was old enough to be neutered. I had a dog who had to have a lead on most of the day 4 same reason. We lost him one day he didn’t have it on. He was hit by a car. Toby was 1 wen he ran out one Night wen our freind went home. Ben loves barking so we taught him to bark at the door. I was a kid wen we had Toby so can’t remember how we potty trained him. My sister learnt to go toilet by watching me go. I love the way u choose wen they wear underwear and pull ups. Ur kids are awesome cooks. My gdad had trained dogs to go toilet for many yrs.

We have 2 escape artists (they won't stay in a collar sooo 🤦♀️) definitely understand the struggle! You do what you have to sometimes to keep them safe! We have harnesses instead of collars which helps when trying to grab them up (especially since they escape collars!) And would give a little more length to the leash when trying to catch her :)

Yes the "Umbilical method" will work with Nessa. I would pick an older child or yourself to have her leashed to at all times unless she is in crate to take her out. With all my pups we start out first thing in morning, then 1 hour later and so on. Once we master that we slowly expand our times. Yes use distinct words, mine are potty and poopy and treats are in my pocket for immediate reward. Never have I had a pup potty in my house after 3 weeks of getting them.

I've seen people use smaller "jingle bells" that they hang on the door. It might be easier for Nessa to ring those than the bigger bell.

I have a small dog and he rings the bells to go out. I also adopted a larger dog who is deaf. From watching the smaller dog the larger dog learned to ring the bell even though she can’t hear it. She knows that the movement of the bells we alert us to let her outside! Petsmart‘s sells the jingle bells that hang from the door, they are in a strip.

I trained my red heeler with the bell trick in about an hour. I was so impressed with her. I'd recommend hanging jingle bells in that crate like the bells you hang from your door handle. I get mine at dollar tree because my girl is hard on them but Nessa would probably be more gentle 🤣 it has its pros and cons because sometimes she just rings the bell to go out to dig and not to use the restroom
@janetlovesjesus1003 жыл бұрын
My dog training advice is to have a small fenced/enclosed area, that you take the dog to, every hour or so. It's their area. Once they go to the bathroom, they get a small treat. It may take a few days for them to realise, potty outside, equals a treat, but it works. Don't allow her to just wander around. She needs to know it's her area for a potty break. I trained both my dogs this way, in around 3 or 4 days.

You'll have less frustration if the bell is easier to ring. A cord with jingle bells can be hung anywhere. We have beneftted greatly from watching the series "Lucky Dog".

At Christmas time we hang a string of sleigh bells from our front door knob....on the inside. As soon as we do that our dog start nudging it when he wants to go outside. The bells ring whenever the door is opened so the dog quickly associated the bells with leaving the house. You might want to tie a few big jungle bells on a long string your puppy can reach easily. You want them to ring easily every time the door is opened for the puppy to make the connection. Good Luck!

My dog was also escape artist. And would slip out of his collar.. suggestions: harness, and teach her to sit at the door. 1 that is you being the leader and 2 no dashing out. Oh and The Monks use leash training too !! (They train German shepherds) my friend uses a counter bell....like stores use. Easy to hit it and portable !!!

Ugh! Potty training dogs or kiddos. Definitely not my favorite as a Mom but so worth it when it is done. WTG Destiny! Nessa keep up the good work.My friends sister called pull ups traveling pants. And that was when they were worn and used for. I thought that was hilarious. But hey, if it works it works.

We always introduced the potty around 1. We started "training" around 15ish months old. We did it slowly. I was either working or in school when we did it. So, it worked. My oldest was around 18 months old. My middle was a little over 2 years old. My youngest was a little before he was 2 years old!

Oh Destiny is doing so well with the potty training!! I've never trained any girls but I have trained my son & nephew, my son picked up really quick and my nephew took about a week or 10 days to catch on. As far as Nessa goes you're on the right track with her too. We trained all of our dogs with "Potty Bells" which can be found on the Chewy website. They're a smaller size bell that sound like a Christmas type bell. Every one of our dogs picked up in a matter of a day or 2 with a treat incentive which we called a "pee-pee biscuit" Lol Good luck to you on both fronts, you certainly have more experience than me so I know you're going to do great!! Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful!!

Little tip if you don’t mind it, the bell should be easy enough for it to make a noise as soon as the dog touches it, something like a jingle bell would be much easier to train with , also one of the most important calls for a dog is the (come) command , it takes time and consistency but but it’s part and parcel of being a dog owner, it could save her life or even prevent a law suit in this day and age especially in America where everybody sue’s for everything , it’s well worth training a dog and the rewards are huge ❤️❤️

Also teach Nessa to sit with treats so you can tell her to sit when she escapes and she thinks she’s getting treats.

This worked for our crazy active lab. H As a puppy, he was a runner, too, (he still is, just not a runner-awayer anymore), he'd climb the fence to get out or climb the baby gate to get out, excessive barking. The sit command seemed to gather his focus and he'd get a treat.

RE:dog treats. If you have a dehydrator, slice up some turkey hot dogs. Dehydrate until slightly squishy in the middle and store most of them in the fridge. Keep a small jar by the door. They are cheaper and more nutritious than most commercial dog treats.

I've had dogs all of my life. I was taught that its consistency. When I first get up right away I take out the dog & try to keep her on a routine of letting her out every few hours. It just depends on the breed/size of dog. You'll do fine!
