We’ve had the exact same problem off puppy in lockdown - people coming to the home jumping and not leaving them alone, what I do now, which has worked really well, is he’s out when they arrive so he can see who it is, but we quickly pop him in his crate with a treat, once he’s used to there voices and them being here (his crate is in the same room) we will call him out and over to us, then when I know he’s calm I’ll get the person to say ok then (he knows that means you can come) if he starts to show loads off hyper and roughness, I’ll call him back to me... because he’s been introduced in a slow manner it seems to keep him in check and reduce it the craziness- the more you do it, the better it gets xx

Thats a great idea. We don't have his crate anymore but I might tell him to go to his bed. Thanks for the idea! x

@@katie_ellison I make my dog wait in her bed whilst the person comes in then, have a release command and allow the person to give attention when they’re calm.

Loved this update! Made me feel so much better about our pup, he's also a year old and like you say on Instagram everyone makes it look so perfect and easy! We're having some of the same issues as you such as the jumping and selective hearing around other dogs so that's a relief haha.

So grateful for this video! We have a 9 month old cocker spaniel who gets soooo excited especially at the door! We have been working hard on stay and practice it when we both come home and if we say go to the outdoor bins etc. We are yet to have anyone else round to try it out but hopefully he will show signs of improvement 🤞🏻

Yay. I've been waiting for this video. Rolo sounds just like our goldendoodle Dolly. Obviously a very similar breed. The first few weeks were exhausting! Worse than a newborn baby. She's got much better she's 22 weeks now. She is still excitable on walks. More so on her lead. If she's off lead we can usually shout her back. She's loves everyone she's super friendly. When people stop to fuss her in teh Street she just sits on their feet! Her worse thing at the moment is the evenings between 7 and 9pm ish. We take her out for her last walk before then but when she comes in she just wants to play and brings balls or toys. Then suddenly around 9pm crashes out. I'm glad Rolo got more affectionate I'm hoping she will too she will sometimes but she's so fluffy I'm sure she gets hot!! Like u say 2020 nobody has really been in the house too often so no idea how that will play out as we've not had her that long! She's honestly the best edition to the family... Hard work but worth it!!

I said that as well Hayley! A newborn baby sleeps and can't move, whereas Rolo could run, bite, wee, poo and still keep us awake in those first few weeks. Rolo has definitely got better too. And the same with us, Rolo is a bit more jumpy on a lead when another dog comes but he also jumps at them when he is off the lead. I find it so embarrassing sometimes haha! I swear Rolo just all of a sudden got more affectionate so I bet Dolly will too. x

With mine when they were little and mouthed us blow at their nose in their face. It stops them in their tracks and mine connected that if I do this I don’t like that and they just stopped after a bit. Elk horns are amazing for chewers and Dog Planet Orbee balls or Jolly Balls are nearly indistructable. They grow out of the ignoring and stubbornness with commands. He is gorgeous, Congratulations!!! I have a 5 year old GSD and he still nips too when getting overly excited 😂 Like you say, it’s never aggressive and purely a playful thing! With the guests, I’d put Rolo in another room until the guests sit down then pass him a toy! He’s still so young though he’ll definitely calm down 💕😂

Thank you lovely I will try that! And yes never aggressive just so god damn happy to be playing haha! x

For not jumping at people when they walk in- if you teach him to sit and stay On something specific like a blanket/mat you should then be able to move that blanket around and he will stay in that spot or on the specific blanket until you tell him he can move off

To help stop the jumping up on people, when he jumps turn away 90° and don't talk or touch him OR shoo him down. Once he stops, then pat him. It will take time but this works! He will soon realise he won't get attention unless he stops. As for the jumping at other dogs and people, never pull the lead back always to the side and guide him in a circle to face away from the distraction. If you pull them back, this causes dogs to tense up and lean into the pull. If you pull to the side, they don't tense up. Honestly, its all time and trial and error! Im sure you're don't just fine! Hes happy, not aggressive so it's all good. 💓
@katie_ellison4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Yvonne I defintely think we need to be more consistent with that as everyone that comes to the house does something differently- e.g some play with him and get him more excited, some pat him down, some ignore him etc. Thank you for the advice. x

Hi ! I’m glad I have watched your video. We just had our first puppy cocker spaniel and she’s gorgeous and adorable! She’s 8 weeks old. You’re right it’s hard work! She’s with us for 4 days now and the biting overwhelmed us. I am just scared for the kids being bitten. We tried few tricks but hasn’t worked any yet. How did you deal with the dog smell in your house? 😓

Great vid, do you remember the name of the site?
@OliviaRI124 жыл бұрын
When you or anyone else comes through the door completely ignore him, no talking to him, no touching, no eye contact until all 4 feet are on the floor and he starts to lose interest then give him a treat and say hello calmly. And repeat every time he jumps up. It of course takes a lot of patience and consistency! You need to make people coming into the door as boring as possible 😂
@katie_ellison4 жыл бұрын
I think that's half our problem we aren't consistent with it. He is crazy though cause he jumps at them as they are walking through the house and he can be quite rough so it's natural extinct to push him down. I think we will really try and be consistent when people are allowed in the house again. Thanks for the advice lovely. x

Sorry this is very off topic but is that an alarm clock that wakes you slowly with light? If so how are you finding it? I’ve been thinking about getting one for a while ☺️
@katie_ellison4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is! It's a lumi clock,I weirdly found an amazon voucher from ages ago I hadn't used to treated myself to it as it had money off. In all honesty I don't know if the light part actually works, but I have to get out of bed to turn the light off when I read so for that purpose it's been great, and also so I don't have to look at my phone in the night when I wake up to check the time. x

Rolo sounds exactly like our labradoodle Baxter. He’s also too friendly with other dogs and people 😃 We’ve only had him since August and can relate to all the puppy challenges but luckily we’re on the other side now. I love having my shadow at home with me all day. We’re just about to start the teenage years, did you find Rolo changed at all between 6-12 months? Xx
@katie_ellison4 жыл бұрын
Aw Baxter what a cute name! Yes I definitely found he changed, firstly he started humping things 😆, next he started to not listen from time to time, and got a bit more cocky haha 😆

For the nipping you can use a time out. As soon as he nips or mouths just take him gently by the collar and put him in the crate or another room for 2 mins (use a timer) then let him out without saying anything. It won’t take long until he realises if you are consistent with it. For jumping If he is very bad I would crate him when someone enters if he is very jumpy. As soon as he goes to jump at someone block him with your own body and use “off” command. Guests can turn their back as he jumps if you aren’t quick enough. Again you need to be consistent and do this every time and reward as soon as he listens. If he doesn’t use the tjme out. Also ask guests not to stroke or fuss him just ignore him until he is calm and then reward him with a stroke etc. Consistency is the key. Best to try and stop these things now when he’s young as it’s harder when they’re older. My lab is 19 months as I had the same issues as you around 9/10 months and I stopped it with these methods. X

We used to call our dog Gus the land shark 😂 They definitely grow out of it eventually! Gus is 3 now and is definitely calmer in most situations. It’s hard work having a dog but they really do bring such love to the family 🐶💕

I wanted to be a dog trainer when I was younger, never followed the career path but did pick up some bits. Firstly, consistency is key - dogs don't understand that they can come on the sofa sometimes but not others, or that he can be fed in the kitchen only but sometimes they get food off your plate in the dining room. These are just general examples. Also consistency amongst family, every person needs to be following the same rules, otherwise it goes to pot. Also, dogs are psychologically expecting to be part of a pack and so they need to know where they are in the pack. Eg they should ideally eat a meal after the family has finished to replicate being lowest in the pack. The same can be said for ideally a dog should be able to sit nicely while you take a treat they are eating away from them - this work helps them recognise the main carer as the alpha. Having a clear alpha really helps with dogs listening to instruction and makes for a really lovely, happy family where everyone knows their role. Hope this helps anyone who may be wondering about dog training ☺️
