While the Brita Elite is certified to reduce 15 contaminants, it is not certified to reduce fluoride or uranium-two of the most concerning contaminants found in our real-world test. I find it odd; people would complain about the Zero Water smelling after a few months. When they just answered their own concerns. The pitchers, no matter the brand, develop mold inside and in the reservoir. Your supposed to wash them every couple of months, then soak them in a solution of 50/50 water and white vinegar. Calcium and magnesium shouldn't be a concern, if the proper amounts of fresh green veg is consumed daily.
@waterfilterguru2 ай бұрын
You bring up a few good points! But first, the fishy smell is actually attributed to the ion exchange resin in the filter, reaching capacity and starting to degrade. But you're absolutely right that regular cleaning is necessary! We actually advise weekly cleaning at a minimum. You're absolutely right that we get most of the healthy minerals we need from food, as long as we're eating a healthy balanced diet

I filter my water through my Brita Filter and then run that filtered water through my Zero Filter. This extends the life of my Zero Filter. If you notice a fishy smell or acidic taste, that means the ion exchange resin in the ZW cartridge is depleted (not due to mold growth). What is the raw water TDS?

@@waterfilterguru"that means the ion exchange resin in the ZW cartridge is depleted" Ya, so, I looked it up. The IER is good for 5,000 to 10,000 gallons of water or 8 to 10 years of use. It's doubtful anyone would use the filter for that long a period. If they did, that's their own doing. The ZW instructions clearly indicate a maximum recommended volume of water, 40 gallons, before replacement of the filter. I have used a pitcher system for decades, and always wash the pitcher in soapy water, then soak the reservoir and pitcher in 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Neither of my Brita nor ZW pitchers developed that smell. Ever.
@waterfilterguru2 ай бұрын
@@robertlee4172 When I said the resin is depleted, I meant it's ion exchange capacity - not the resin bead itself deteriorating. The resin beads in the filter are loaded with sodium or potassium ions. These are exchanged for cationic (positively charged) and anionic (negatively charged) contaminants in the water. When all sodium or potassium ions on the exchange sites on a resin bead have been swapped for other contaminants, that resin bead is depleted. When all or nearly all the resin beads in the filter have been depleted, the water can start taking on an acidic taste or fishy smell, depending on what contaminants were in the water which are now attached to the resin beads in the filter. This is why that fishy smell is so often associated with ZeroWater specifically, and not other pitchers that primarily use activated carbon.

@waterfilterguru2 ай бұрын
Distillation is one of the best methods to purify water - but it has serious limitations. The process takes an extremely long time to distill a relatively small volume of water, making it not a feasible option for many folks. Similar to reverse osmosis, distillation will demineralize the water, so remineralizing before consumption may be prudent.

@waterfilterguru2 ай бұрын
The Aquatru Under sink system geni.us/uNU5X uses the exact same filter cartridges as the Classic countertop version. I personally don't have concerns about how alkaline the remineralization filter makes the water. In fact, many people pay big $ for alkaline water (just look at the bottled water industry). From a health perspective, I'd recommend talking with your doctor about any benefits/ risks of drinking alkaline water. I've heard some folks complain they don't like the taste of alkaline water, so it might be prudent to go to the store and buy a bottle of alkaline water (like Essentia) to taste before investing investing in this system to determine if you want to use the remineralizing filter or not.
