The story takes place in Carthage in the palace of Queen Dido. She confesses her love for the Trojan prince Aeneas to her follower Belinda. A dark group of witches accompanied by a sorceress seek to destroy the happiness of the royal couple from their cave. They call upon a spirit who, in the guise of Mercury, urges the prince to leave for Italy. Aeneas submits, against his will, to Jupiter's order and takes the decision to leave that very evening on his ship; which delights the witches who plan to sink Aeneas' ship. At the announcement of his departure, Aeneas provokes the anger of Dido who does not understand why he must abandon her. He decides to stay, but Didon forbids him and drives him away. Once Aeneas has left, she gives herself up to death in the poignant lamento When I am laid in earth. A chamber opera masterfully blending comedy and tragedy.

I heard her sing this aria at a concert with the Vancouver Symphony. She also sang Beethoven's 'Ah Perfido'. The following afternoon the great piano accompanist Gerald Moore gave a lecture and she and her husband sat a couple of rows in front of me. Backstage after the talk I was in the lineup to get his autograph. He spotted her in the line and yelled 'Vicky!!!"

I am now convinced after 50 years of seriously listening to music that Victoria was the greatest female singer who ever lived - her two recordings of Butterfly with Gavazzeni and Sabrina, her Mimi for Beecham, and her recording of Faure's Pie Jesu for Cluytens are all exquisite. I think the Pie Jesu is the best recording ever made by a woman!

Mais quel chef d'oeuvre absolu est ce petit opéra de Purcell! Oeuvre crée pour être représentée sur une petite scène montée sur des trétaux dans un internat de jeunes filles. Mais quelle merveille la justesse de l'accent dramatique, la rare beauté des passages musicaux et le ton calme et détendu qui donne lieu à l'épanouissement de tels sentiments. Il est à constater aussi le rare esprit de synthèse avec lequel Purcell a abordé la partition. Plusieurs scènes différentes se succèdent établissant une progression dramatique spontanée qui nous met aux auditeurs dans l'encadrement d'un rythme étonnant. Les tableaux se succèdent vite et on aboutit à la formidable scène finale qui sont les adieux de Didon à la vie. Scène si réussie épanouissant un beau sentiment et permettant à la fois un tel profit vocal et dramatique à la cantatrice qui l'interprète. Or en 1965 Victoria de los Ángeles était encore en très bonne forme vocale et nous permet ici de nous réjouir avec une magnifique performance dont il est à retenir la beauté du timbre et du phrasé. Hormis cela, il y à aussi un fait à signaler, c'est qu'en effet voici l'intégrale de l'opéra enregistrée par Victoria sous la direction de Sir John Barbirolli. Mais auparavent de l'intégrale présente, Victoria avait enregistré les adieux de Didon à la vie hors contexte de l'opéra. Et même je me permettrais de dire qu'à plusieurs occasions. Or Victoria envisageait déjà depuis longtemps les possibilités vocales et dramatiques qu'offrait la reine de Troie crée par Purcell. Il y eût de même un remarquable antécedent historique dans l'enregistrement de l'intégrale de l'opéra. Une version dans laquelle Kirsten Flagstadt tenait le rôle de Didon et Elisabeth Schwarzkopf les rôles féminins qui n'étaient pas celui de Didon : Bélinda et la Sorcière. Hormis ses interprétations wagnériennes, la Flagstadt avait aussi dans son répertoire les grandes heroïnes de Mozart et de Gluck. Par exemple, elle enregistra une magistrale intégrale d'Alceste de Gluck qui est une référence interprétative de l'oeuvre, ayant comme partenaire Raoul Jobin comme Admète sous la direction de Geraint Jones. Grand merci du partage. Vous écoutez chanter Victoria les premières mesures de la grande scène finale de Didon est vous atteignez déjà le sommet de l'art lyrique. C'est une réjouissance pour les ouïs et l'intellect ainsi qu'une caresse pour l'âme.

Victoria de los Ángeles 1923 - 2005 a Spanish operatic lyric soprano and recitalist ... She studied voice under Dolores Frau, and guitar with Graciano Tarragó, at the Barcelona Conservatory, graduating in 1941 after just three years, at the age of 18 .. She was accompanied on many of her early recordings by both Graciano Tarragó and his daughter, the guitarist Renata Tarragó. ... De los Ángeles performed regularly in song recitals with pianists Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons, Her recitals of Spanish songs with the pianist Alicia de Larrocha, a fellow Barcelona native who was her close friend, were also legendary. С первого прослушивания влюблена в Старшую Ведьму - в ней столько мощи, и силы, и кайфа от собственного злодейства, и иронии по отношению в чувствам людей. Только хор ведьм для меня слишком многоголосый, не камерный. И эффекты грозы слишком прямолинейные, гром же был заложен в партитуру, если я не ошибаюсь, зачем упрощать его буквальным громом листа железа?
