I know the piece from other places. All, but particularly the opening, is stunning. As a piece of ceremonial music, for a solemn occasion, those muffled drums beating to the slow, measured pace of pallbearers, moves me to tears. Every time, as effectively as the first. Clearly, besides being a wonderful composer, Purcell understood the human heart.

Too many Marys. 'Bloody' Mary I (Tudor), Mary Stuart, & her mamma, Mary of Guise, Mary of Modena (James II's second wife), Mary II, this one (another damned Stuart) & married to William III (the original Orange), Mary of Teck (George V's consort). And not a one of them was very merry. Am I missing a Mary? Brits' royalty need some new names. How about Catherine?

PS: Purcell wrote an intimate piece. While this amplified version is LOUD, it is not an improvement on the original score and orchestration. Take a listen to a period-appropriate performance, please.

no where do i say that i'm trying to to be historically accurate, this is my interpretation. In the 19th century it was a thing to rework small old pieces for large Symphony Orchestra. I'm continuing this movement because i love it. And... i think that the composers would love it too. Have you for example listened to Elgar's rework of Bach's Fantasie und Fuge BWV 537?

Pray tell, which Queen Mary?
@michaelhirst419113 күн бұрын
Written for the funeral of queen Mary II, who was the daughter of James II and the wife of William of Orange, aka William III. They reigned as joint sovereigns following the Glorious Revolution in which James II - the last of the Stuart kings - had been deposed. It was the only time we have had joint sovereigns. Mary died of virulent smallpox. William, who had caught and survived it as a youngster, sent away everyone who was at risk of catching it and helped to nurse her himself. Unlike Mary I (Bloody Mary) Mary II was much loved and genuinely mourned
