Shade is precious as we get almost 365 days of sun here in the desert and the Beserie Bird feeder dome covers have been working very well! Please note the height created an issue when placed, and has been fixed for the hummingbird feeders.

I made three covers with $tree frisbees. They were easy and inexpensive. I found the how to video on YT. I’m thinking to flip another frisbee over and make d food dish for the winter. I think it can just be zip tied to a hanging metal basket plant holder. Drill some drain holes in it. I won’t be doing that to the covers. I’ll buy new frisbees for the project. The covers I made should last for years.

A simple homemade version: screw a cup hook into a wine bottle cork. Center the cork on a plastic plate and screw another hook through the plate and into the bottom of the cork. Voila - The hooks are your hangars and the plate is your shade. Takes about 20 seconds to make, simple to install, and cheap!

You could also use an inexpensive bowl from a dollar store, now that I think about it.

Way to go! Didn’t seem to bother him at all after a few minutes - great job. Unfortunately, the only way to really stop guarding etc is to put up multiple feeders out of sight of each others - on porch, deck, under trees, even next to large bushes. Another thought depending on your sun exposure is to plant something in a planter and use those to sorta of shade. A small tree in a large pot or a wisteria kept pruned n- I did mine like an umbrella. It took a couple of years for it to get in an umbrella form - it was grown over my swing so you could sit in the swing out of the sun. You have to get it growing and twisting around the arbor - has to be a strong one but instead of getting a Chinese or Japanese type - get a native to the US like (Lonicera sempervivens) or the Dutch variety (Lonicera pericylmenum)- not so wild and hard to keep in check. There are others but not sure for your area. Or what really would be good is a coral trumpet honeysuckle - I have one that’s called Major Wheeler but the natives come in various colors white, red, coral, yellow, etc. - in fact growing hummingbird vines and flowers along the wall like zinnias, cuphea/firecracker plant, fuchsia baskets, etc. They love cardinal flowers but they need quite a bit of water, and hosta the same and a little shade. Lantana they love and comes in all kinds of colors. What else - pretty blue catmint, day-lilies (Oakes has the best in the country), petunias, hollyhock, hummingbird mint (can’t think of it’s real name), sunflowers, red hot poker, salvia. Some of these are perennials, some are annuals. This should give you enough - ones I know they like. Some you can bring in for the winter and they will poke along but you can put them back out come spring and they will perk up. I try to have flowers they like from early in spring all the way through late fall or whenever yours go elsewhere if they leave at all out west. Ours come in around March/April and leave around late October coming down from Canada. Late stragglers that get cold and hungry. I have even placed feeders close but on different levels and hang a hook or a teepee of sticks and hang cheap silk vines on them, or I like better is to grow morning glories, white moonflower, cypress vine, cardinal vine, etc which they like to feed on. Look for fragrance which moonflowers have, others are four o clocks which lemon smell perennial. Butterfly bush. I keep thinking of more.😊😮 Better stop. Some you will need to put soaker hoses in a trench and cover with mulch so the water doesn’t evaporate, trench about 6” deep with about 3-4” mulch. Some of these annuals will reseed next year. Have great fun!

Thank you for the great information! Yes I have lots of other trumpet flowering bushes in the garden. Shade is a valuable commodity in the desert. I can't understand why any home owner would remove mature trees from their yard. Maybe they weren't healthy. I put one feeder out in the morning on a hook that’s in the shade. Then I put another out in the afternoon that’s on the other side of the yard thats now shaded. I remove any in the sun. That sugar water gets way too hot in Oklahoma heat. I also freeze the sugar water in ice cube trays. Both feeders are left out at night so they can fill up early in the morning. In the end, when it’s decent weather, I leave both feeders out. I like the covers but it’s still too hot to leave them out in mid afternoon. Actually, the hummers aren’t even about in that heat. I’m going to check into the covers for days that aren’t 108 degrees with index of 118. Thanks for this info. The birds are great full I’m sure!

Cats can stalk and kill the birds if it’s not high off the ground. You don’t realize how many cats roam the neighborhood until you place a camera. To keep dominant males from chasing off the others, try to place around 3-4 about 15 feet apart, they can’t guard them all. Too far apart and you create another dominant feeder. Always fixes the problem. Hope this helps 😊

Bees or Wasps/hornets? Bees never bother my feeders but the wasps are a pain. Hang or make a fake wasp nest and hang it nearby....it helps keep the wasps away as they are very territorial. Also make sure your feeders do not leak at all. I bought the saucer ones and they don't seem to go for them but the long handing ones with lots of parts that connect allow for seepage when they age. Fake wasp nest are sold at $ store and very cheap and reusable.
