Dear Heart, I was 15 when I went to Woodstock in August of 1969. Your reactions and your appreciation of the music, the talent and the alchemy of times past make me think you’re an old soul. If you really want to experience what it was all really like, get the DVD of the documentary, “Woodstock” and see what was possible back then; 500,000 of us having the time of our lives, living in peace with one another, sharing what we had with each other, and listening to music of the Gods. By the way, that documentary won the Academy Award. I could sit and listen to you react to that film for hours and hours. Happy New Year and may it be your best yet!!!!! ✌🏻

I am so struck by your genuine reaction to this song. I can’t believe that this music that affected me so long ago, is still affecting people today who don’t even have the environment of the times for context. Young people who by and large don’t have the patience to truly listen to anything or anyone and really HEAR. You give me hope, young man! This same song, they performed at Woodstock in 69. Don’t miss it. There is much more to explore. Have you done Helplessly Hoping? Harmonies and genius use of alliteration will leave you gobsmacked.

"The words of the song depict the horrors confronting the survivors of a nuclear holocaust in which the two sides have annihilated each other. A person from one side stumbles upon a person from the other side and asks, "Can you tell me, please, who won?" The question is left unanswered. To stay alive, they share "purple berries", as a result of which they "haven't got sick once". The lyrics beg "silver people on the shoreline," described by David Crosby as "guys in radiation suits," to "let us be."[2] As the wooden ships, devoid of metal that would become radioactive from neutron activation, are carrying the survivors away from the shores, radiation poisoning kills those who have not made it aboard. The number of talented musicians rises and falls over time....same for the number of talented song-writers....same for talented singers....SOMETIMES they all reach a peak at the same time....this is what happened during 1960's and 1970's, and is the main reason music from that era seems so spectacular.

Your heartfelt reaction is much appreciated. I first heard this song on the radio in about 1968. I had moved away from home to my own flat. I was 18. I felt so grown up. At that time, girls did not usually move away from home to live by themselves. The music of CSN and sometimes Young did something to me on a deep level. I’m sure it’s similar to what you’re experiencing. My generation is so lucky. It’s great to see young people like you to feel music so deeply like we did and still do. Right on!

Left side David Crosby, right side Stephen Stills, highest voice Graham Nash. Some of the sweetest harmonies around. "Helplessly Hoping" is a definite must listen. If you want to see them live, may I suggest you see "Woodstock." It was their first live performance. Keep 'em coming. 🤘😎❤

This song came out when I was a hippy in college. I remember playing flute along with my guitar playing friends at a party doing Wooden Ships. You have a lot of good songs from them to come.... there are literally dozens. As you like their harmony, which was their trademark, try Helplessly Hoping. Glad to see the music I grew up with has never grown old, even if we hippies did.... some of us anyway!

This is such a beautiful song, the vocals are so well blended and I love Stills guitar work. A band called Buffalo Springfield also had Stephen Stills and Neil Young. It was a very popular band around the late 60's early 70's, you would probably like that group a lot too. Both Stephen and Neil are excellent guitar players and songwriters. Music today is manufactured with technology, it is no longer just natural talent being delivered. Anyone can learn how to create music now and with AI, really the artist is not truly responsible for the start to finish product. They have a thought and a machine turns it into something. Back when this song was written and recorded, a musician needed the skill to do it all from putting down the notes through all the steps it took to get to the finished product. There are real musicians still today but they are not punching out albums for Spotify or KZbin.. I love that album cover, it is a photograph taken by Henry Diltz who is a musician and a photographer of musicans. I think you can still find his photographs online. Because he was a musician, his sessions were always really relaxed and the candid shots he took of so many great musicians are wonderful to view. On the couch left to right, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, David Crosby...and behind the lens, Henry Diltz.

The song has an interesting lyrics and one should dig into the song. Additionally the story I read was that Crosby and Kantner (Jefferson Airplane), personal friends were out on a Yacht and started with the Lyrics to the song and both agreed to do the song later. Stills helped write some of the lyrics and music and they both produced a cut of the song and I think David Crosby even did a recording with Kantner Check out the Jefferson Airplane Cut.

One of the amazing things about this track and most of this album - Lead guitar, organ, bass and first vocal on this is Stephen Stills. Rhythm guitar and second voice is David Crosby. Nash sings high harmony. Drums, Dallas Taylor. Stills was a wizard in the studio, multi-tracking himself on various instruments to build an amazing track that sounds live. They have two live albums from their prime period (1969-70), 4 Way Street, a double album that came out in 1971 and Live at the Fillmore East, which came out about a month ago.

See that blond guy in the middle of the photo? He's 80 years old today - his birthday. And you're right, this song is still beautiful. It warms my old heart to know you understand and it touched you the same way. You're right - they were having a dialogue - the one in the middle (Stills) and the one on the right with the long, curly hair (Crosby). Part of what made their vocals so interesting was that one came from LA, one from the South and the other from Northern England, yet the blend is perfect. Most of the instruments are played by Stills. You'll be surprised!!! So... Helplessly Hoping, Almost Cut My Hair, Deja vu, 4+20, CARRY ON, 49 Bye Byes, Woodstock, Guinevere, Southern Cross. Live? Try this - their SECOND LIVE PERFORNANCE WAS AT WOODSTOCK AT 3 AM. Second time in front of an audience. Go find it on KZbin, watch it - I'd love to see your reaction! You are just starting on a terrific journey and I have to be honest - I envy you. I would give a lot to have the experience of hearing them for the first time, again.

These songs still touch me to this day. I was fortunate to be born in ‘58, so I grew up with these artists and took it all in as it happened. Anyway, music has been around longer than institutionalized religion and to me is the ONLY true link to spirituality, the only “religion” that makes any sense at all. I’m genuinely touched by the sincerity of young folks discovering the beauty of what has been created & passed down. At this point in history we don’t have to settle for the crap product being passed off as any kind of art worthy of attention, we can gather & celebrate the classics of that time by listening, learning and recreating on our own.

I can’t say as I’ve ever come across anyone who doesn’t hear this album in particular and go “my god, the harmonies are perfect, how did they find each other?” And as it happens, they all agreed that when they first got together and harmonized as a trio, they had the EXACT same reaction: holy crap, how did we find each other? We sound perfect together. So it’s unanimous lol. But they did the work. And this time through for me (the 100th for sure) I really appreciated Stills’ guitar work the whole way through. It’s like a tense boogie that matches the vibe of the survivalist/apocalyptic lyrics. This song is perfect for the way he plays guitar, with a lot of solo-style picking in the Texas blues (mostly) style. It was my first favorite of theirs and still remains at or near the top. (Multiple songs on Deja Vu compete with it for me). Enjoy the rabbit hole! This album and DejaVu are seminal.

I'm really enjoying your reactions to these legendary songs. I started playing guitar in 1970 because of CSN. If you want to hear them live, The "4 Way Street" album is a live classic. On the first album, which Wooden Ships appears on, Stephen Stills played all of the instruments. David, Graham and Stephen all sang. Each of the then has compositions on it. Helplessly Hoping features Stephen fingerpicking acoustic guitar with three part harmonies, Long Time Gone was a Crosby song written after the assassination of Robert Kennedy with a great Cros vocal and three part chorus. It's electric and powerful. Keep up the good work.

I really like your reaction! An open heart helps. These guys are...special. Try Guinevere (studio) and Southern Cross (WITH the video), studio. And yes, Helplessly Hoping. And many more. Stephen Stills is the guitarist and was the first voice on this one. Crosby was the second voice. Nash has the highest voice. When they came out, none of us could believe it. PS: Woodstock is a fantastic watch, but their set isn't one of my faves. . . The guitar was out of tune; they had never performed live together before; and there were 400,000 people in the audience. Sly, Santana, and Hendrix killed! Among others. But the vibe is the biggest thing.
