This!! I say this all the time, that we thought it was just normal to have great music being released continuously, on the radio, concerts etc. We just thought it would last like that forever, in our minds, why would it stop? But yeah, by the mid-90s I was done with almost all newly released music. I was born in the mid-60s and all the music I listen to now is from the 60s, 70s & 80s. Music now is objectively much, much worse.

Steely Dan is perhaps the deepest rabbit hole in all of modern American popular music. Some warnings. Don't try to define what genre they fit into. SD is their own genre. Ignore their lyrics at your own peril. Their lyrics are adult, funny, ironic, smart, clever (some would say occasionally too clever), and occasionally obscure and complex. Their characterizations are a collection of losers, misfits, and the disaffected. All of their songs are well produced and played at a high level. They are, IMO, on the Mount Rushmore of bands recorded since 1970. This cut for instance is about how we humans are creatures of habits, and addictions, and how we often find comfort in these behaviors, even though they are negative or none productive. Try "Black Cow" next, then "Peg", "Kid Charlemagne", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", the entire "Aja" album, "Hey Nineteen", "The Fez", "Green Earrings", "Reelin' In The Years", "Babylon Sisters", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Don't Take Me Alive", "My Old School", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", and "Doctor Wu". There are many more because there's really no such thing as a bad SD song.
