TVRs are pretty wild cars at the best of times - but few are madder than the outrageous Cerbera. Styled like a hot rod, with an interior from space - and TVR's own fire breathing engines - this is a recipe for insanity on wheels. But is it really as evil as it looks?

The Clarson car was the first 4.5AJP V8. The engine was designed as a 4.2 and was offer as a 4.5 for Tuscan racing. The 4.5 was standard in the production.4.5models. The 4.2 produced 340bhp with 350ftlbs torque the 4,5 380bhp with 370ftlbs. The Speed 6 was 310bhp. The V8s where always the most powerful but 2vpcyl wasnt fashionable. Yes you guessed i am the A in AJP.

Drive a TVR and you're guaranteed to get to heaven because hell can't deal with that level of evil. @@falcoleone6822 He's completely correct. Clarkson arranged a supercar showdown in the '90s. Ferrari actually refused to supply a 355 to compete after they heard the TVR was competing. The 911 Turbo of the time (which had already beaten the Diablo and 355) got obliterated by the TVR. At the time the Cerbera was an absolute weapon.
@SpitfireFortyFour
@SpitfireFortyFour 4 жыл бұрын
@@falcoleone6822 I'll gladly compare it. It's a beautiful, hand built car with a rich history and it's less likley to explode into flames than a Ferrari. For its time it was cheaper and much, much faster. It took until the F430 for Ferrari to match the Cerbera in performance, when that released the Cerbera had been out of production for a year.

Got stuck in one of these as a nosey 12YO visiting a specialist garage with my dad. After 15 mins of trying to work out how to let myself out - to my relief Dad came along but he couldn’t work out how to open the bloody door from the outside. When I first approached the car, the door was already ajar, waiting like a trap. Nothing more terrifying than the AJP V8 with open pipes screaming it’s way through the gears in the 90’s. Mad in every way.

Great video Jay! It reminded me of the road trips I did with my mate in his 4.2 Cerb down to the ‘ring. He generously put me on his insurance so we could share the driving, although around the ‘ring itself (due to no insurance cover on the circuit itself) I was ultra-cautious so was being overtaken by just about everything else on track! Every journey in the car was an event and the AJP V8 was central to the whole experience. My profile pic is a photo of me driving that Cerb and, even though that was about 10 years ago, I haven’t found a better picture to replace it with! I have to confess though that, when I finally manage to get another TVR in my garage, it will be a Chimaera. I also love the ability to get the roof off as often as possible to hear the glorious V8 even better, and I can’t resist that Rover V8 burble, which you don’t get with the flat-plane crank arrangement in the AJP.

It’s one of the most beautiful and misunderstood cars of all time, a real work of art... no turbo or supercharger, manual gearbox, no superflous electronics in general, no direct fuel injection, no variable valve timing, just 2 (!) valves per cylinder and (if my serves me well) an OHV engine... all that and still a specific output close to 100 hp/l... now, that is what I call engineering!

TVR's AJP8 engines (4.2 / 4.5L) were a 2-valve, single overhead cam (SOHC) design; the 4.0/4.3/5.0L Rover-sourced V8's, though, were overhead valve (OHV) design. The Speed Six was a double overhead cam (DOHC) design. I wonder how wicked the V8's would've been with the same head design as their straight six units...no wonder the mighty Speed 12's 7.7L V12 was heavily based on them, it was basically like two Speed Six engines 'fused'.
@LjekarnaDajkovic
@LjekarnaDajkovic 5 жыл бұрын
Mighty Jack in the test I was referring to was the V8 Red Rose version (an old issue of Evo), I did remember it was an OHV engine... thanks for clarifying, anyway 👍
@Roddy_Zeh
@Roddy_Zeh 5 жыл бұрын
@@LjekarnaDajkovic The Red Rose package wouldn't change the valvetrain design, that would basically mean a completely different engine, which wouldn't make economical sense for TVR. Only offered for the 4.5 engine, it gave 440 bhp at 7250 rpm and 390 ft.lbs. at 5500 rpm (up from 420 bhp at 6750 rpm and 380 ft.lbs at 5500 rpm). With reshaped inlet and exhaust ports to increase the flow of gases and a higher compression ratio giving about 50% of the improvement, the rest is only available when using 97 octane super unleaded petrol. The Red Rose conversion has a dashboard mounted switch to control which fuelling and ignition map is used to enable the engine to take advantage of the higher octane fuel while avoiding detonation when using the more easily available lower octane fuel. Still, amazing figures for an engine designed in the 90's with just two valves per cylinder and absolutely no variable valve timing, intake, etc., none of these gizmos, to achieve nearly 100hp/liter.

Yes, it is in the Lakeland Motor Museum, the person who owns it (not the museum) likes to drive it occasionally, which is why they keep it by the door (rest of the museum is in chronological order, so its slightly out of place in the 40s or 50s). Well worth visiting the museum if you are near by. Was fantastic seeing it again - I saw it at the 2006 British Motor Show and thought I wouldn't see it again after it was sold off (for a paltry £158k if I recall correctly).

I've driven all TVRs, from the M onwards. I gradually got used to the acceleration and tremendous handling. That is, right up until I drove a Cerbera V8, in my case a 4.2. It was awe-inspiring. There's no car to compare to it on price. It was the fastest accelerating production 4-seater in the world when it was launched. It looks exactly what it is; the hard man on the block. It's quite easy to drive oddly enough, right up until you feel like pushing it a bit - and that's not to its limit (you do not want to go there). You can lose the back end when changing up to 4th if you are heavy on the throttle. I was driving another TVR, a Chimaera on the M40. I'd lost a wheel weight and I could not even go to 70mph without the vibrations becoming unbearable. A Cerb pulled up alongside, and by sign language I told the driver what was wrong. Just then a Renault Clio (of all things) flashed its headlights behind the Cerb. The driver of the Cerb waved goodbye, dropped a gear, probably to third, revved up, then dropped the clutch. Smoke poured from the rear wheels. The back end squiggled a bit and the car shot off into the distance, trailing black rubber marks on the road, and smoke. The Clio driver had braked, probably thinking the Cerb had locked its wheel. The car eventually came past, with an ashen woman of about 20 at the wheel who steadfastly refused to look my way. Don' try this at home of course, either spinning your back wheels with 450bhp on tap, or flashing a Cerb. Especially the latter. A wonderful car. Absolutely mad. It was originally going to have a 5-litre Rover V8, from TVR Power in it. It probably would have sold more, but it would have been a shame. A brilliant car. The boy who took over TVR from the great Peter Wheeler should be hauled up and confronted with the corpse of TVR and asked what on earth he thought he was doing.

Our TVR SpeedSix blew THREE ENGINES in 13 months and spent 8 of those months in the car park at Blackpool. Favourite memory was getting it back from THIRD engine to have it blow a couple fuel injectors and almost go alight. For the 5 months it worked from when the factory delivered it it was fun. Friends don’t let friends buy TVR, unless they’re rich, given the company died.

Did I hear you refer to a TVR as a Trevor? That's definitely a new one to me, gave me a chuckle! The dash, around the wheel etc etc looks like something Pagani could have taken inspiration from, love the design both interior and exterior (of course). Great review, more unique British sportscars please, would be good seeing some Triumphs (maybe a TR8, or a Gt6). If my friend's Spitfire is anything to go by though, anyone over 6ft is in for a squeeze!

Cerbera handles well.. Until it spectacularly doesn't. It can whip around like a pendulum. More muscle car than dynamic track destroyer. Hard top = driver's car. Absolutely needs the original round headlights..! 4.2 / 4.5 V8 is just a better engine. Why would you not want a more reliable V8? Oh, and they get real hot inside 🥵😂

Love the channel, among the five TVR's I have owned over the years the best was the early 4.2 "clatter cam" Cerbera. Would love you to review one of these, the Speed six was always the sedate gentleman's express of the line up! I always used to buy and have mine serviced at Fernhurst TVR. I heard stories of 911 owners taking out TVR's on test drives then plonking them in ditches after running out of talent on a corner.

TVRs have always been rapid but lack chassis refinement. Aftermarket experts can help with that. Cars which demand respect and a definite slow-in-fast-out strategy, as they don’t react well to sudden weight transition, as the suspension tends to wind up and cause one end or another to break away. The v8 Cerbera was a GT car for mentalists - let it much miles instead of thrashing it and they’re able to grumble along in a high gear. The Tuscan can be almost civilised, if driven sanely. Drive within their limits band they’re fun and engaging. Push them and they bite like nothing else, though.

The Clarkson car was the 4.5 litre V8 which was a flat plane crank based on F1 engines, the race was over 1 mile stretch and that car was stock, it's just what they do, beat and pulverise all those heavyweight super cars from that period into submission. Power to weight ratio is where it counts, the 4.5l gets into it's stride after 80mph

Some of us don't have to. My son has been in it and I've followed it on a runway until it disappeared into the distance despite my Chim 4.5 being flat to the floor. But the most surprised was the unbelievably arrogant owner of a GT3 RS Turbo who showed up and told us he would humiliate every TVR there. The Speed 12 made him look like he was in reverse. We never saw him again.

The 4.2L Speed 6 engine is the most powerful NA i6 engine ever put into a production car (440HP). My argument is that cars like this are the safest cars on the road as well. Why? Because the safest car is the one with an attentive driver, and with this you are absolutely forced to pay attention. The only way it could be safer is if it had bald tyres. In the rain. With double the horsepower :)

You CANNOT compare the Cerbera Speed Six with the V8 Cerberas, entirely different beasts !! The AJP8 engine was a detuned racing engine and literally those engined Cerberas DID try to kill you every time you drove them. Having driven both, I can say they have completely different characteristics. Give it too much gas in the V8 and you were spinning off straight into a ditch, the V8 had far more low down punch, the Straight Six needed revs for you to get the punch from it - so it made the way you drive it different - and that made it a safer car to drive than the maniacal V8 - which I miss so much, the sound alone made me grin from ear to ear.

God I fucking love these things, also wish the roof came off, I do like a 2+2 though (or a 3+1 ha). Wish TVR made some kind of blend between the Cerebra and Tuscan, surprising they didn’t considering how many near identical models they did make. It’s astonishing that this massive 4 seater weighs barely over a tonne, and I love a good low seating position, how does it compare to the lotuses? I love the massive doors and side windows, with the windows down it must feel like a pillarless coupe.
