WHO WE ARE
In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

Great job guys !!! After being in the interstate highway building for 28 years. I wish everyone had to lay pipe or try to grade something at night with equipment. That way when you're sitting in a lane closer in the day time, you understand why there not doing it at night. Having bigger lights helps, but you still have a lot of the same problems. That camera, could have been a person working on something else and you two didn't see enough other. Keep up the great work guys !! And thank you for the videos 😀

Thanks Alyssa for the great video editing - you do an amazing job - and we've really been enjoying your music choices as well. Filming at night and in the snow sure gives an ethereal quality to work that is basically a PITA. All the best - glad the snow has not hit here yet.

I know it's WAY too late to point this out, but your "mini" has a swing boom on it designed EXACTLY for situations like you were in while working on the middle of your trench. Trying to set grades and finish at night is MUCH harder, even with really good light, so don't beat yourself up. Always try to finish in natural daylight; it's about 1000% easier to see what you're doing. One other tiny tip: When you're dragging your finish, try "float dragging" twice ie: drag from your house toward the road on the entire area, then drag parallel to the house (90 degree angle) from the garage toward the road over the entire area - you'll like the final finish MUCH better. Btw, working on a flight plan for the TBM to Santiago Chile (it's mid summer there).

It's the cold temp and wet snow getting on the pipe that causes the cement to seize up ! I always use a clean rag to clean off the surface of the pipe and use extra cement that will make it easier to slide on and especially if you have someone at the other end pushing while you guide it into the pipe. Also if you have the pipe pitched up at a 45 deg angle up at the other end while it is pushed in helps. I use to install 6 inch diameter pipe with no problem. But I was not working at night and in cold snowy weather like you both ! You both are amazing 👍 thanks again for making this video too !

PMCS (Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services) can NEVER be overrated. If the equipment isn’t maintained it will fail....ALWAYS! Great work on the driveway, trench and pipe installation. The working conditions didn’t cooperate, but you two slugged it out and persevered to the end. I have to say that you two are some of the hardest working individuals I’ve ever watched on KZbin. That’s not to say that there aren’t others who work just as hard, but your at the top of my list of VERY HARD WORKING individuals. Some future day you’ll be done with the house and look back and wonder what your going to do with the free time. You may even go through construction withdrawals, but it will be worth it in the long run. Hang in there, your doing great things for your future.

Can I suggest that when you are directing things in the dark you use LightSticks /Cyalumes. Its what we do in the military to combat the challenge you are facing being seen from the Backhoe / pickip, particularly when you are surrounded by spot lights. If you have 2 light sticks you can create signals for left, right, forwards backwards etc. without it being too complicated.
