Four inch galvanized sheetmetal pipe . put in a lint cleaning accessable fitting at the bottom of the pipe as you will always get lint buildup.

Yes, I was screaming at you until about 25 minutes in! You figured it out, though. RTFM! Read the code, then make your plans. I just moved into a house that was venting the dryer into the carport that had been enclosed for a garage... what a mess, lint everywhere and I had to use a dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the air. Bit the bullet, did a proper installation of 4" galvanized tin pipe and have never looked back! There is very little heat generated from the pipe, most of it goes right outside. Unistrut is complete overkill for tin pipe, you can use plumber's strapping.

I have a steel roof and installed snow brakes on both sides. They hold on to the snow to keep it from sliding off and killing someone. You can use then use a snow rake to pull off some of the thicker or heavier snow. Works good for me.

it boils down to the amount of heat that the dryer spits out, pvc does not handle heat well.

The "V" in DWV is for plumbing venting, not exhaust venting. Yes, it has been used in newer heating systems (90+%) but it is not listed for that use either. There is specifically designed duct work for those heating units. The only acceptable heating venting material where I live is galvanized steel. Properly installed it will not collect lint in a dryer system and can be taken apart to clean if it does build up.

Tip for others. Raise your dryer a foot off the floor, it's then easier to stick a basket under it to load/unload.

I'm a fan, but I can't take it! Run your drill on high speed and quit pulsing and rocking it! Keep it straight... Put the drill by the ceiling so if it spins it will hit the bottom of the floor and won't take your arm with it. It's nice that the snow sheds from the roof with just a few inches of snow.

With a lint filter in the dryer, I would build and put a diverter box on the vent pipe to direct the warm air inside the garage in the winter. Even just an hour every wash day would reduce power consumption.

should be usin4 inch metal or aluminum for the dryer vent. i've never seen anyone use plastic for a dryer vent haha and you should never crimp into the vent, all crimps should be going outward so exhaust or lint doesn't collect and cause a fire. also no screws.

Try inserting 4 inch galvanized into the 4 and a half pvc as a sleeve only where it goes through the wall. That way you don't have to patch things. 4 inch galvanized pipe is what you need to vent a dryer. There are also length and number of elbows allowed as well as verticle length.

Been following you guys for a while now, along with a few other channels that are building their own homes debt free .I am one of those people. We did just what you guys have done. Lived in a camper while building our homestead. What really gets me is how all these other people watching vids like to criticize others on how they choose to live their lives. There is nothing wrong with doing what you feel is right for you. Being pregnant and a baby on the way having a washer and dryer is going to instrumental in your daily routine. Not everything needs to be this off grid issue. I say live your best life and do what you need and don’t listen to any of the nah sayer. They are not the ones living there with you and dealing with it. Keep up the good work.

Use inexpensive (relative to PVC) metal vent pipe and cover it with insulated cover that is commonly used for air conditioning/heating ducting purposes (HVAC Insulated-Flex Ducting Ventilation Duct Hose). That will comply with building regs and also keep inside the pie and out of your house. In any case, you will most likely have solved the issue one way or the other since we're weeks behind real life.

Give up on that snow landing area. It piled up higher than 7 feet at my cabin for 12 foot per side roof. Drain Waste and Drain line vent to the roof above a drain stack. Not Drain Waste Air Vent as in HVAC. Flex hose or sheet metal duct. It comes flat and self interlocks into 2, 3, or 4 foot sections just like the stove pipe in the shack.

As a HVAC worker for a living, this is a hard no. This is not acceptable from the heat. Also, the static charge on PVC pipes from left over lint an hot air running through it would result in buildup. You explained it perfectly. Absolutely must be changed. You can insulate any duct pipe.

It was a learning experience for you and your viewers. I'm glad you aren't up on the apex of the roof anymore!!!! You don't have to prove anything to your viewers. I see it as common sense now. In 2001 I worked on a job inside a metal building that was 300' wide and 900' long. At the peak of the roof it was almost 30' with over 10' side walls. In January it came almost a foot of snow, the weather stayed cold for about two weeks and then warmed up to just about freezing. The building was not heated although there were some area heaters being used in certain areas. During the afternoon the interior of the building must have heated to just above freezing and the entire roof's snow slid off all at one time. It was piled up about 3 feet high and five feet across the length of the building on both sides and that was packed down a lot. No one was entering or exiting at the time but if they would have been there is no doubt they would have been seriously injured. I was only there for one winter and we only had the one real heavy snow but I think of it anytime I am around a metal roofed building to this day. If you are at the right place it isn't like someone throwing a snow ball at you, it is serious business.

Awesome opening shot from the drone. Roof slides can be triggered by vibration of simply closing a door, deadly to people and deck structures. As you might agree...at work we often say, "We do it right because we do it twice." Good luck on the vent, you will figure it out.

I'm not sure whether or not you read these comments, because I haven't noticed any replies from you here. If you do read them, I do understand you don't have time to respond to them. I read many and there are great comments. One is the use of trail cameras to catch things when they happen, and they work well in cold and dark situations. They are relatively inexpensive as well. Also for security and catching animals prowling around at any hour. You are doing a wonderful job with your home build. Do not allow negative comments to plague your mind. You don't want the PVC pipe for any vent that might be subject to heat, fire etc. The reason is off gassing and toxic smoke. Also read about what the limits are for heat rise and vent length.

Rated for plumbing vents, not heat-related vents. It will outgas toxic chemicals when it get heated, and it will burn in nasty ways. Not good for a dryer or range.

I am in far North Idaho and we do not use our dryer when the outside temp. is warm enough to hang our laundry on the clothesline. This is what people did back in the day. Just do not use your dryer in the warm/sunny weather and hang your laundry outdoors.

Drain waste and vent or dwv is for your sanitary sewer system with vent. Not ductwork, including your bathroom fan.

4" aluminum pipe with silver metal tape for sealing the joints. Never use screws. Make sure the crimps of the pipe are pointing with the flow of the air from dryer.

I use PVC for ducting my wood shop dust collection system and resolved the static buildup by wrapping the pipe with bare braided wire which was grounded to the dust collector. This has been working fine for several years without static buildup. I used one wrap of wire every 2 feet.

PVC, vent is for plumbing vent, not air. I could have done this in half an hour with metal vent pipe and some metal tape, and for a whole lot less. Talk to appliance installers in your area to get materials.

PVC can hold static charge. Spark plus dryer lint bad idea Instant fire. Use sheet metal venting and add a ground wire.

I always call the inspector in my area, when working on something new. They can tell you what is used for the job that they will pass. Most inspectors are glad to help you so they don't have to make you change the work later. Sorry to see you had a set back, but its only a small one. One 4" PVC pipe is a small price in the total price of building a house. My wife always tells me did you read the information yet, you need to start job XXX next week and you need to make sure X and Y can be used. I never would have been able to do the work I did without her. Be safe and take care of each other....

FYI, in woodworking dust removal systems we cut down on static in PVC pipe by running a copper grounding wire inside the pipe. The wire is then grounded to the house ground.

You are very lucky you didn't break a wrist using that battery powered drill for a big hole saw. That's a job for a big corded drill WITH a screw in arm to control the torque (like my Milwaukee). It also comes with an optional right angle chuck for drilling studs for electrical. Right tool for the right job will keep you healthy and safe.

PVC ( poly vinyl Chloride) will emit Chlorine gas if burning hence the ban on using it for any venting or potential hot air source. cheers , really enjoy your build series

Hey Jessie, I do this stuff for a living. Next time drill a small pilot hole from the inside all the way through then drill from both sides that way you don't make a mess by blowing out the other side. This is for both wood and cement. Just a bit of a trick and it saves buying an extension.

I used to live in Northern Colorado in the mountains... that snow sliding off the roof could kill a cat, dog, or person. We had to fence in the area so an unknowing person/animal wouldn't wonder into the death zone.

small thought here, During the hot summer months, dry the laundry outside, in the winter a little extra heat in the house is a nice thing! If you're not using the dryer as much in the summer you (a) save electrical cost as well as heat and (b) can more easily mitigate the heat with a fan or two.

You will need a one way exterior flapper to prevent cold air from coming in and also a critter cage. They come preassembled. You error becomes a training video for others. You can use your metal work for keeping the dryer vent straight and flush to the wall. 4 inch vent pipe!

Home Depot usually sells 4" dryer duct in flat sheets of aluminum or galvanized steel. The flat sheets are pre-bent to form a seam when you curl it into the round tubular shape. Your Unistrut stuff will work fine. DWV is for plumbing only.

Instead of venting to the out side with your dryer set up a water bucket trap in your garage. To capture the lint and use the heat to help heat your home. Missouri wind and solar has a video on how to do this.... No seance in waisted good heat

DWV is for Plumbing not to be used with anything else unless the manufacturer specifically calls it out as acceptable. Most bath fans allow schedule 40 PVC, most high efficiency direct vent water heaters allow PVC venting...defiantly use sheet metal duct and I would wrap all vent ducting with duct insulation.

A snow guard called a snowbird is a device installed on metal roofs most of the time on the seam to retain snow and ice from falling to the surface. It helps you to minimize your liability by preventing accidents such as snow and ice slide.

By venting with pvc, I believe they mean vent stack. On demand hot water uses a schedule 60 or 80 to vent but never seen pvc for dryers.

The snow sliding off of your roof may look pretty right up to the time that it kills you!!! That's why I installed several rows of "Snow Defenders" on both sides of the roof. They will keep the snow from sliding or avalanching off of your roof.

When drilling with large hole saws wiggle it around while drilling. It makes the hole a little bigger, keeps it from jamming and makes it easier to get the coupon out.

Metal for Dryer Vents... You can even get flexible duct for dryer connections. Exterior vent comes with a flap that only opens when the dryer is in use.

Hey Jessie, don't let it get you down brother. Isn't it ironic that in the good ol USA where we live, they sell this plastic expandable flex pipe as dryer vent and it is not supposed to be used at all. It too clogs up with lint and can cause a house fire, a very common cause of house fires. Anyway, you should be able to slip metal pipe right into your wall brackets and elbow right outside. Only hard part I see is getting the PVC pipe back out of the wall ERRRR!! Metal pipe is what we used once we learned this lesson about the flex pipe on dryer vents. They sell them in the big box stores as a dryer vent kit....how crazy is that? I also see Mom is coming right along there. We still pray for you guys often, the little one as well. Be blessed.
