As a retired builder, it can honestly be said that there fairly tried and true ways to build, but you guys are humble enough to not say you know it all, but have the guts to try it with the knowledge you have and let hard work and effort take you where it may. You really can't do much wrong with consistent effort and the guts not to give up. Good job.

Great job you guys! Always enjoy watching! Very inspiring. We are in NM, and starting to compost for gardens. Your vid about that is what brought me to your channel. We lived in Kalispell MT for 7 years, ugh, we miss it! As I watch you mill I'm reminded of wood splitting then. Really fulfilling work! Hard but rewarding, our winter utility bill was $45 a month! My mind still rolls with envy of that now! Now I'm drooling over all your saw dust! Lol, we have to buy woods chips for our compost here! Keep up the great work! Thanks so much for taking us all with you through your journey! Prayers for safety, great timing, and smooth building go out for you both! 😊

you two are my hereos. I just found you today. from milling slabs with a chainsaw... I saw it was an old video and now have caught up a bit till now a month ago... I am so happy to see your house taking shape imagine sitting in your new house looking at where started and how you could have become more lost in the wilderness but you two a so determined that you have blown my expectations. Nat on the back... I hope there hasn't been any tears along the way because you two look so happy the whole time...

Hey guys... Looking GREAT. I just read through the comments below about half-way.. I see why people get discouraged from continuing to post.. Avoiding criticism. So after the last "negative" critique, I just looked and skimmed for the supportive ones. The one true thing you two have & share is the level of committed persistence. If years down the road you find a mistake OR nature throws you a "twisted" beam..I'm SURE you two will handle it well.. But I'm certain when you've finished, the pride alone put into this worthwhile project will shine through for decades... Warmest wishes... Drew

Hi Guy's: You could score the line with a marking or razor knife. Then cut a small bevel to the line cut from the waste side. This will give you a groove and shoulder for the initial saw cut. Bert

Also I would over sticker those boards on level sleepers with some slabs on top to reduce twisting until you can use them. That is wood worth protecting; tarp well. I can get the shipping plastic wrap from my lumber yard by just asking when I am shopping. Bert

For cleaning the wood chips and dust off the machine (or even around the garage), you can't beat a leaf blower, either gas or electric. I use one for blowing the snow off my van if the snow is light, and even for clearing light snow off the path, if it's not enough to warrant bringing out the snow-blower.

Of course you will learn that wood bends and you should have only taken half the belly out on the first side then rolled it 180°to take the rest, but like you say, "it is all just learning experiences" Search back sawn, quarter sawn and hygroscopic to better understand milling timber and how it will warp.

I restored an old Mill myself. I strongly recommand installing a strong FLAT LASER in line with the blade. I am from europe so i dont know if this is standart in the US anyway but having a laser line down the length of the tree already resting on the mill-bed makes everything so much more intuative an easy. I had a friend makeing the laser happening and i only installed it so i can`t actually provide any sugesstins on the technical side part of the laser itself and the requiered electric installation. So comment section feel free to weigh in on that part.

@NIKOLA22107 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert, but I've seen a lot of them use a planer, and that's not how they are used. You need to start at the one end of the beam, set the depth, and push the planer to the other end. Then you repeat the process as many times as necessary to cover the entire width of the beam. That way you won't get any marks or grooves in the wood ;)
@michaelwest62387 жыл бұрын

@DPezzy197 жыл бұрын
Also try hooking your beams or other long pieces using one hook point in the "measured" center of the piece. You will notice that one person can control the swinging piece easily. When setting a piece high e.g. the top of the wall, tie a tag line on the end of the piece and then your partner doesn't have to balance on top of the wall. A 10 foot fall onto concrete could be fatal !!

The thicness inconsistency will not matter if it is slightly thicker in areas than specified by plans. The beam is going to be upright not horizontal. Why it is interesting and maybe later down the road be important to be able to saw off long boards with constancy thickness this beam does not matter. In theory as long as it is the right lenght youcould put a log with bark and all to support it..
@Aretz197 жыл бұрын
its going to be a forever piece of there home, whats wrong with taking extra time to make it look nice, and the mill needed to be leveled anyways, might as well do it now rather then when there is snow on the ground.
@ryanchaffee72437 жыл бұрын
Some of the beams will be horizontal. You have tie beams, girts, purlins, and your top plate that ties hour bents together. Not to mention if there might be a mid span plate for rafters to rest on. But it is wood and it won't be perfect just have to learn how to deal with it like the rest of us. Nothing is perfect in the building world. Just has to be more pleasing to the eye than perfect.

Grind down the high spots on the woodmizer and repaint. Should be no problem if only off by 1/16th
@dixfer2037 жыл бұрын
Correct..;but why should he take the time (4-6 weeks) for the manufacturer to try to solve the problem? I'm sure woodmizer doesn't have a 30'x30' level granite floor like NASA, so their replacement rail will likely have the same imperfection.

You will make a lot cleaner cuts if you praktice cutting with one hand. The free hand should rest on the lumber you cut and support your upper body. That way you will slowly get a feel in the muscels if you are cutting straight or not. It's one of the first thing a carpenter learn in Scandinavia, but it takes practice and time. You will be amazed what cuts you will be able to make. 😋
