Thanks for this video Tomy. Like you I couldn't justify the import costs of getting one in the UK. Up to now I've made do with an adapted violin purfling tool. Now I shall make my own! I enjoy making my own tools - especially the expensive ones. I recently turned a brass binding trimmer along the lines of one sold by Stewmac. Cost to me was £10 - against £28 plus international postage. I was so pleased with the outcome that I made three more as gifts for my friends! Keep up the good work Tomy, your videos are always very informative.

Thanks Frank! Just to follow on another comment tread, for me in Canada the $58 is $78 plus shipping. It makes this tool very close to $100 for anyone outside of US. That is why I thought this video might help a few people in the same situation that I am. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and your comments

Ah yes that’s makes sense, I guess if you are outside the US then it would be easier and quicker to make.

Now that was cool.. I'm actually one up on you because I own a metal Lathe.... I think it would be great to make about 3 of those .. and have them adjusted for the top cut, the side cut , and a step cut if need be ... might as well make several while you have it already set up , right ? Thanks ..You Rock

Nice build once again Tomy. I believe it's more traditional to build your own tools, luthiers and cabinet makers would build their tools during apprenticeship. I'm looking to build myself some spring clamps, next little build. I suggest a practice piece first, to get used to it, it's easy to slip up, on a binding channel, if you move to fast, and consistent pressure. Remember it's a marking gauge, not a cutting tool!
@HovingtonInstruments
@HovingtonInstruments 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pat, the cut is made in several passes, the first is a very light pass. I will also keep using my binding router and chisels, this will help prevent fibres to break on the edges when cutting the binding channel. Thanks for watching

@@HovingtonInstruments Yeah sounds good, like i had said previously, I really saw a big difference using the dremel 115 cutter vs the stew-mac model. It requires a few more passes, but no chatter or splintering really clean channel. Oh! and get some bean bags! OK, bonne construction! aux prochain show live!

Very cool tool build. Like a cutting gauge but with a rounded side. Is there a specific radius that you used or just a bit tighter than the tightest radius on this specific instrument?
@HovingtonInstruments
@HovingtonInstruments 5 жыл бұрын
I made the radius to fit my smallest radius. In this case a Ukulele . Thanks for watching

Great thing! I always wanted to see how this tool works. Very little information about this. Basically everyone uses a router.
@HovingtonInstruments
@HovingtonInstruments 5 жыл бұрын
Even with this tool you need something to remove the waste. The Gramil cuts the crisp line and in the old days they used a chisel to clean the channel. I will most likely use a router also. But the risks for chip out is all down to nothing since the top fibres are cut. I will use it on my Mandocello build when I get to this step.

Two Cherries Instruments They are only $58 at LMI no shipping if it’s inside of the US. This is a great vid but my time is worth more than $58 and that’s not including material costs to build.

@@Fazman81 I actually enjoy making my own tools, I have spent more than retail price to build many tools and jigs. It's true that it would take much less time but what I have learned in the process pays of over and over again.

Two Cherries Instruments I hear ya me too especially when the tools are hard to find. Just that the one LMI sells is very well made and $58 doesn’t seem like too much. Your original comment was that the price tag was too high, that is why I made my comment. I do agree making ones own tools is very rewarding and educational.

@@Fazman81 I get it, I have wanted one of these for a while but couldn't take the price for such a simple tool. I put most of the money I make in my shop back into tools and equipment. My shop like Tomys is part time and I only do the work for for my personal enjoyment (I work a day job as and Electro-Mechanic working on light rail trains). Your right it's not a lot for a well made tool. I happen to have everything to make Tomys version in my shop now so I will probably go that route.
