it is incredible the amount of patience that it must require to shape wood into such beautiful musical instruments.....i watch these videos with the hope that they will help me increase my level of patience so i will be better in my own woodworking...

Andy33643 It actually saves the body of the instrument from cracking all the way up if you hit the edge of it. Also it's pretty decorative. + if you check it out, you can see that most of student instruments have this inlayed stripe just painted on them - so it's also an unofficial quality indicator. For me at least.

Beautiful work, very impressive! -What did you use to stain the outer layer black? - Also, is there a special process to get an even penetration of colour, or is it so thin that the dye simply soaks through? Thanks Bertie.

Wow - I can't believe you made purfling! Nice work! How did you plane the wood to be so thin? Did you plane it or somehow shear/slice it? Are the three veneers laminated with hide glue?
