A condensed version that shows the system I use for the violin purfling.
I apologize for the low resolution of the images, these are old videos but the working method is still the one I currently use. Anyone wishing to go into more details of the various operations can refer to the 11 videos of the complete series (link below).

Dear Mr. Sora, thank you so much for this and many other videos of yours, which I do appreciate so much. What I do not understand until now is: Do you first glue the purfling in the corners coming from the upper/lower bout or those from the middle bout? I hope my question is understandable :)
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 2 жыл бұрын
I start by locking one of the upper tips without extracting the purfling but simply putting the glue from above; then I extract the remaining part of the C including the tip and glue it down. Then I do the same thing for the opposite C. Once the C's are glued, I glue the upper and lower bouts, without ever extracting the purfling tips. The glue will be able to penetrate the tips by capillarity, putting the glue also from above the purfling. You can see the whole procedure with captions describing it in this specific video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4nTlnSejstjnJI You can find the English translation of the italian captions on the description page below the video

Thank you for sharing your works. I would ask you about the depth of purfling channels you did cut, I mean, how deep the purfling will sink? Sorry, if my question can't understand well cause my poor english.
@DavideSora
@DavideSora Жыл бұрын
At this stage of the work, the depth of the channel is approximately 1.5 mm. But more than the depth of the channel, what matters is the wood thickness under the purfling, which must be between 1.5 and 2.0 mm. Subtracting this thickness from the total thickness at that point will give you the final depth of the channel. Furthermore, the surface of the purfling does not lie on a horizontal plane, but on a slanted one that goes up towards the edge, so two depth measurements would be needed to be accurate, one for the outer wall of the channel and one for the inner one, which will be lower. But there's no need to be too fussy with the depth of the channel, the important thing is to be sure that the purfling that will remain glued in the wood is at least 1mm thick, and that the purfling fits snugly into the channel, with no gaps at the bottom.

@@DavideSora Thank's a lot.. As we made the wood thinner, I wonder is it make the structure stronger/ rigid or weaker? And what about the sound? What specifically the function of purflings? For decorative purposes or respect of the tradition or maybe a signature of the luthier? What the main reason?
@DavideSora
@DavideSora Жыл бұрын
@@andrestp The purpose of purfling is both aesthetic and functional. The aesthetic part is evident, the functional one is that it serves to create a line of reinforcement with continuous fiber along the edge, to prevent cracks and fissures in the end-grain areas of the edge, which would be much weaker without the purfling reinforcement. My opinion is that acoustically it has no influence, as the thread is located in correspondence with the linings, where the plates are glued, and in any case it would be impossible to establish whether there could be a minimal acoustic influence

Salve Maestro. Che materiale ha usato per creare il filetto da zero? E' la prima volta che lo vedo e ne sono affascinata. Grazie sempre per questi video.
@DavideSora
@DavideSora 2 жыл бұрын
