Sometimes even a handle is not fully made of silver, I had one with a hallmarks, and handle was just wrapped with about 0,3-0.5mm thin silver !!!

Sorry SD, but by definition refining means to isolate a material down to its primary element (Oxford Dictionary states: to Refine means "remove impurities or unwanted elements from (a substance), typically as part of an industrial process."). Four nines means there is99.99 parts Ag and .01 part of other [trace] elements in the particular item; be it coin or bar. ;)

The reason that sterling silver is harder than pure silver - and in fact even pure copper too - is that the atomic matrix is arranged differently in an alloy than in a pure metal. Hense the finished item is more suitable for use - silver ware, coins for circulation etc. I'm not sure what purity of silver is the strongest. Perhaps around 80% since 80% is a common purity for vintage coins in many parts of the world. The same is true for gold. Traditionally gold is (with the exception for white gold) only alloyed with silver and copper. There are some other interesting alloys which can give you blue gold and so on but lets stick to the classical. We all know that pure gold is quite soft and that's why it's almost never used in jewelry. A common purity is 14K which has a great strength but the funny part is that even both copper and silver when pure is stronger than gold - the strongest classical gold alloy is actually around 18K and is noticeably stronger than 14K. However since gold is quite dense this leaves very little room for other material hence you need much more for making an item than even 14K so it's not used as much. I once made a graph of the gold volume of total volume vs. purity and it was actually quite interesting. For the rest I assumed 50/50 silver/copper mix it vaires a little depending on what hue you want your gold to be but since copper and silver density isn't that far apart a 50/50 is fine for illustration. For the lower carats like 8-9K volume wise there's only about 1/5 volume of gold. Once you hit the 18K mark gold part increases in volume fast. So that's why if you look at three identical jewelry pieces. One 8K, the other 14K and the last 18K but they vary wildly in prices - that's because the actual gold content varies wildly.

I also seem to recall a statement from RCM that the annealing process causes the spots and their coins should be regarded as bullion only. I have never bought a coin from them since. Does anyone know if the RCM coins have improved quality now, or do they still have milk spots?

Let’s see if I got this right. A 999 silver coin has the exact same amount of silver as a 9999 silver coin (1oz), the difference being that 999 is less refined, so in addition to the silver it contains a greater percentage of copper. If we took the example of the Canadian Maple Leaf (9999) and the American Silver Eagle (999, in actuality 9993) we would find that the Silver Eagle is in fact a slightly heavier coin since it has more copper in addition to the one ounce of silver. The ounce of silver covers only 99.93% of the coin’s composition and then we would still be left with .07% copper, in comparison to only .01% with the Maple Leaf. If we took other considerations out of the equation the American Silver Eagle should then be slightly more valuable since it has more material overall. Then again, I would guess the refining process for 9999 silver requires more labor or more expensive equipment, which has its own value. And of course the small amount of copper is negligible, especially considering that it is a relatively cheap metal (currently 25 cents per ounce).

In 1964 Kennedy half dollars were made from 90% silver and 10% copper. Half dollars made from 1965 through 1970 are composed of two outer layers containing 80% silver and 20% copper with an inner core of 20.9% silver and 79.1% copper (net composition: 40% silver and 60% copper)

Nice overview of the different silver purities. If you look at international coins you missed some like the coins of the LMU (Italy, France, Belgium and Switzerland), they had 83.5% silver coins. A lot of european coins have different purities like 62.5%, 64% and 72%, and if you look at the coins of the German States it gets really complicated.😁

If you ever get hold of British coinage, the cut off date is 1946. If its dated 1947 onwards forget it, in terms of silver content. Between 1920 and 1946, the British government silver standard for coinage was 50%. Before 1920 it was Sterling silver for coins. The 2 stages of the British government's debasement of the circulating coinage are completely linked with the 2 world wars.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the weight changed from the regular nickels of the day significantly when they used higher amounts of silver in the alloy in test runs. When they tried 50% silver, for example, vending machines (candy, cigarettes, etc.) and such would reject them because of the weight discrepancy. So they had to use a lesser amount of silver proportionally so that the weight of each nickel wouldn't change as drastically.

SB- You should also look up "Coin Silver" as it is that Canadian/World type .800 and often in jewelry, watches or older silverware made from coinage. Then there is Plate, German Silver and Nickel Silver for the newer stackers to be aware of what is out there to AVOID... also - silverware knives are typically "handle only" in Sterling but also "filled silver" or weighted like candlesticks so inside the handle is another substance. Some additional interesting topics around this are why silverware is "silver" to begin with? Antibacterial properties of silver possibly? and where the word "Sterling" actually comes from...? The Pound maybe?

Just bought some Canadian silver quarters. The last year for silver quarters was actually in 1968 just like the dimes. In 1967 they had both 80% and 50% compositions would probably need a scale to tell the difference.

Be careful with morgans and peace dollars....they are worth much more than their 90% melt value. I've been stacking for 3 months.....still trying to get my first Morgan(s) at a good price. They are at a premium well over 999 spot.

In 1697 the British government mandated that all silver hollow-ware be made from Britannia silver, 95.8% or 11 1/2 parts in 12, to prevent people from melting sterling coins, 92.5% or 11.1 parts in 12. The restriction was removed in 1720. A great number of Mexican bangles stamped 925 are silver plated copper, beware. Pure copper is also soft, but when mixed with silver, the different sized atoms make it difficult for them to slide against each other, so the result is a harder metal. The handle of the knife has its own mark, which would say sterling. Canadian coins were 80% to the middle of 1967, and then for the rest of the year, 50%. 1965-70 Kennedy half dollars, are a clad of 80% outer layers with a 20% inner layer. 10% Mexican silver was also silver plated to give a silvery look.
