I love the pulley idea to raise/lower the house. The house itself is also very impressive, and well designed. Thank you much for sharing.

With the pole through the center of the house does your house spin around the pole with the wind? Does that cause any problems with the birds?

Tim, Excellent Purple Martin House, I want to build one this winter. Do you have any Blueprint type plans so I have something to follow, like dimensions of boards, etc. I would purchase them from you if you were willing to part with them. Thanks Steve K

Looking at your opening shot I noticed that you put your house near trees. Martins do not like being close to other objects that might block their view of an incoming hawk. If your having problems getting martins try moving it at least 25 feet (50 is better) away from the trees. They also like being sorta near human houses. 75 to 150 feet seems to be ideal. I’m glad you are keeping starlings out but also do the same to house sparrows. Both are non-native birds that will actively kill Martin chicks and adults in order to take over their nesting box. House looks great. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the suggestions, Todd. I was hoping that I was far enough away from those trees. I put this Martin house at my camp because I my home is surrounded by many trees. Also, I have a pond at the camp and I thought the Martins might like that. We have a lot of Amish in my area and many of them have put up Martin houses. I was hoping some of those Martins would hop over to my place!

Another tip is to put a decoy/fake purple Martin or 2 on top of the house. It will serve 2 purposes. 1. Attract curious martins to investigate your house. 2. When the hawks attack your martins (they will) the hawks are dumb and always seem to go for the decoy, which helps the real martins get away. Also put your house up early in the year as the first birds back tend to be 1 year olds who are trying to find a new home.. Good luck and keep up with the videos as you learn more. Help to encourage more Martin landlords.

your house is fine where it is Martins Like to soar a lot and be able to see there house also the recommended height is 12 to 18 feet .Give it some time because the babies will return and move in. You can lower the house and clean it then cover the holes in off season.
@TimTools992 жыл бұрын
No. the cable keeps it from spinning.

i made one with a winch too, however it rode up and down on a 4x4 post which didn't work out because the 4x4 twisted. I was thinking about using straight exhaust pipe too but afraid it might bend in the wind. Any thoughts? how tall is your house? Great job

Would like to see more details on the pulley system, though I can see some details from the video. Looks like you have an appropriately sized hole, matching the pole, through the center block and slots on each side of the pole for the pulley cable to go through, and a pulley at the top of the pole. Does the brake on the winch keep the house from falling? Looks like the cable segments in the slots in the middle block would keep the house from rotating in the wind.
@TimTools994 жыл бұрын
You got it right. Yes the brake will stop the house in any position. It's called a brake winch.

Where did you get the plans for your house?
@jamesrowe63896 жыл бұрын
Wish you luck this year. Let us know if you get them. I have just put out my first gourds for the martins. Would love to have success this year. I also like you house. I plan to make something very similar for next season.

How heavy of a gauge is the pipe that you used? And how tall is it?
@TimTools996 жыл бұрын
It is old well casing pipe from the scrapyard. It's pretty heavy. Pipe is 3ft into the ground and birdhouse is up about 12 feet.
@weathormantom72062 жыл бұрын
Tim did you ever get martins in that house?
@symlexbrn53962 жыл бұрын
It's most likely house sparrows will occupy it before other birds

The pipe is a piece of well casing i got from the scrapyard. I primed and painted it and we dug a hole 3 ft deep and cemented it into the ground.

So how did you do? Get many martins? I bet it filled up by the end of the season!
@TimTools994 жыл бұрын
Actually, I do not have any Martins yet. I have learned that it's best to put up a Martin House where you can monitor it and keep the sparrows and black birds out. I am not at my camp much and the Sparrows have taken over the house. Sparrows will drive Martins out.
@dwightmarshallphoto4 жыл бұрын
Yes , this is my first year. It sparked my appreciation of good Airguns. I had to eliminate several starlings and only a couple sparrows. I didn’t put my house up until I saw martins at a nearby house. So nobody had a chance to move in before the martins. Now I am part of a really nice airgun club I’m Baton Rouge 😊
@jackloeb17793 жыл бұрын
@@dwightmarshallphoto Which air gun to you think is the best one to purchase?
@dwightmarshallphoto3 жыл бұрын
@@jackloeb1779 that’s a tough question. I have pcp Airguns which require a scuba tank to fill or a special compressor. About a $1200 price tag to start. A decent break barrel with a good scope about $450 would be fine. Look at the reviews here for a break barrel. I have had a few hatsan and Benjamin’s. www.airgundepot.com/break-barrel-air-rifles.html

@@jackloeb1779 (Gamo Raptor Whisper with scope) bought it online through Cabela's for around $150 Very accurate Pellet rifle, definitely take out a starling/sparrow at 50 Yards. Good luck with the Purple Martins ..

Can you tell me how I can find a winch pole like yours?
@TimTools995 жыл бұрын
Hello Shelly. The pole is a piece of well casing pipe i got at the junk yard which i cleaned up and painted. The winch is a "brake winch". I searched online and bought it somewhere.
@stevem75714 жыл бұрын
You can use a winch from a boat trailer, the exact same thing
@pschlentz68854 жыл бұрын
You can buy similar wenches at Harbor Freight. They ship is one is not near you. They are very reasonably priced. Don't go too cheap if you can afford it. They do work great!
@jamesrowe63893 жыл бұрын
The only issue with a boat winch is that most are not Brake winches, meaning is you let the handle go or it gets away from you the house will come crashing down very quickly. It is advisable to make sure it is a brake winch. As mentioned by others Harbor Freight has several at very reasonable prices.

No ... not this year. The starlings and sparrows tried to move in though. I covered the round holes with half moon shape and that took care of the starlings.
