Pfc. Andrew Pase grew up in an orphanage in Russia before being adopted and moving to America.
Pase, who graduates from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island today, talks about his past and what his pursuit of military service means to him.
“I needed a sense of fulfillment and purpose… there’s nothing more important - if you live in this country, why not serve it?”

We adopted our son from Russia when he was 6 months old. He is currently in Marine bootcamp in San Diego, Kilo 3229. He's wanted to be a Marine since at least age 14. He signed up for 5 years. The fifth year was added as they asked him to be squad leader. We are incredibly proud of him.

I can deeply feel same as him, before I joined Marines, before I even came to the United States, I was expelled from high school back in china in freshman year in high school, for participation in anti communist propaganda activities. I had no future nor prospects of life in my home country. But I was lucky enough to still come to US when I was 18, I was able to go to college, earning 2 BA degrees in 3 years, and found my way into a U.S. top 100 university’s grad school, but just before I finish my master, I got my green card through asylum, and I went straight to a Marine recruiting station same afternoon I found green card in my mail box, 3 days later I raised my right hand in MEPS, I wanted to give back to this country, and earn something I can never find in any university anywhere, and one day I shall call this country my home as well!

When I was a Marine Senior Drill Instructor, I had a recruit who immigrated to the U.S. with his parents. He was 50 lbs overweight and failed two out of three initial strength test events. I could have dropped him, but I kept him in my platoon. Why? Because he had heart. I wore him out every chance I got. He lost the weight and graduated with so much pride. I met his mother and father at graduation. His father gave me the biggest Russian bear hug in full uniform. His son about lost it more than I did. It was a great time.

I joined the Marines because I felt I owe something to this country. My family had no home, no country, no nothing. Ten of us including my mother were received by the American people to be a part of their own to start a new life in a peaceful country. My feeling of owing something to America came stronger when over 350 marines died by bomb in Lebenon. I remember walking in the basement of a hopitol working and felt so strong about paying back to America. I joined the Marine Corps in 1984 at the age of 23. I left a very good paying just to replace at least one of those Marines who sacraficed their lives for the country. That is a fulfil feeling , a sense of pride.
