Purse Seine & Ringnet Tuna Fishing Process - Fish Brailing

Today, the world is moving more and more towards responsible and sustainable fishing. Purse seine fishing is one of the most popular fishing methods accepted throughout the world. However, fishermen feel that purse seines could result in the unintentional capture of other marine species and cause damage to the lower layers of the sea. The purse seine is one of the most efficient and advanced commercial fishing methods and is mainly intended for the capture of dense and mobile schools of pelagic fish. A purse seine is made of a long wall of netting framed with waterline and lead line that has bag rings hanging from the bottom edge of the rig, through which runs a wire purse or steel line that facilitates the puckering of the net. The operation is very labor intensive and requires 25 to 30 crew members on board the fishing vessel. The length and depth of the purse seine has been increasing over time and today purse seines up to 1200m in length with depth up to 100m weighing from 2 to 5 tons. A large mesh purse seine was designed and developed. A SONAR to facilitate easy detection of schools of fish and hydraulic power. A block was also introduced to facilitate the handling and dragging of the purse seine. Fishing operations carried out with large mesh purse seines in the depth range of 50 to 220 m. The catch was mainly made up of large mackerel (68%), followed by tunas (17%), carangids (6%), palometas (3%), seerfish (2%) and miscellaneous fish (4%). The catch and composition have changed considerably and the absence of sardines is striking due to the use of a large mesh in the net. Landings of tuna and other quality fish came mainly from depths greater than 50 m.
