The thought that it would ever be "too late" to try anything creative in life makes no sense, but I was guilty of it at one point.
In this video I talk about that period of time and what got me out of that head space.

This is a good one :) Having turned *50* a month ago, and published 4 videos on my own channel these last 4 weeks, creeping up on consistency, the most important takeaway for anyone is probably that creativity doesn’t «start» or «end», and the goals one set for oneself is just that, self imposed goals - and the larger and more diffuse those goal are, the less chance there is one will actually achieve it, or priorities will change over time. Instead, setting a general direction one wants to go in, and setting smaller, measurable, short term goals to get there, weekly or monthly, allows for more flexibility, more adaptability, and most importantly: you are achieving victories almost every week and month - if a goal isn’t achieved one week it can probably be done next week, or you realize the goal wasn’t the right one and change it. By setting short term goals, focusing on achievements that build something you can build upon (be it doing a small video every week, signing up for an acting class, going to an industry event, making small 30 second scenes lighting and filming oneself to get practice acting as well as understanding the system around the actor. Finding similar smaller goals and tasks for other areas if ones interests are something else is equally achieveable, building the path stone for stone - and at some point in your path building you will encounter others who will join you on building that path, or maybe someone wil come along and offer you a ride, or pay you to build a path for them for a while, taking you in new directions and maybe altering those goals on the way. But the key is to never stop building that path - once you do, you settle in, and the view you have is set. But: even more key is this: if you stop building that path, you can always start building again at a later time: sure, it might be harder, it might take longer, but it’s possible. Having started out in my 20’s in ‘94 wanting to be an industrial designer, the internets showed up, and by random chance I learnt writing html, got a job in a small startup, continued on that path making websites for some years through the dot com boom of the late 90s and early 20s, started working in an ad agency doing web-stuff, but at the same time doing graffiti and stensil art on the side, learning video and sample based music production, dj’ing a bit on the side, building some movie props on the side, going freelance, and suddenly: curveball: 10 years ago starting a shop for classic roller skates … in Norway, where there currently is 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground - while doing websites for customers, and now adding youtube-videos to the list of things. So it’s never to late to start, never to late to pick up on an old dream, never to late to continue, and never to late to change course and head in a new direction :)

I love how you do the "commentary via subtitles", just like me in my recent/only video on my channel. Also, thanks for the motivation Senpai, needed to hear this as a 25 y.o. brat, who's got a sh*t ton of gear, is skilled af but still struggling to find some funding for his upcoming shortfilm and is starting to get just a little bit stressed about it, yeah not too much, just a little bit 💰
@DarrenNaylor
@DarrenNaylor 10 ай бұрын
Haha I appreciate it. I’m a very sarcastic person and that doesn’t always translate so I like using the subtitle commentary to highlight that. Find ways to do stuff alone and as cheap as possible so you’re always in control of your output. If you’re gonna wait on people, funding, etc. you might wait forever. I taught myself everything so I don’t have to wait on anyone anymore. If people join in, great, but I don’t depend on it.
@imKeshav
@imKeshav 10 ай бұрын
@@DarrenNaylor Thanks for the advice, yeah, I do all of my stuff alone and have upgraded my skills to a level that I wasn’t even close to just a year ago (and I used to be pretty skilled back then even by today’s standards), but the only challenge that I’m facing right now is that I’ve burned down all of my money in the process of upgrading myself and now I’m bone dried. I used to be a Top Rated Plus freelancer on Upwork and used to earn quite a few thousand dollars per week but now it’s just zero. And I don’t even know when I’ll get a single job next time ‘coz the job market has become a disastrous and dystopian hell where everyone expects you to be a Picasso or a Nolan just so they can “buy you as a slave” for 5 or 10 bucks. So, it’s more about survival at this point rather than just funding my short film 😅

Being hard on yourself and wanting more for yourself is a good thing. It means you care. Just make sure those feelings are directed towards goals. Try things, experiment, see what your interests are. We are the same age and this resonates with me so much. I got back into acting in January 2021, and I have been taking classes since then. I just filmed my first short last month that was something I created. Now I have the itch to learn more about cinematography. Having creative control in my acting career makes me happy. I also decided to start drawing again in December. I finally found a course to help guide me in March, and I’ve been steadily improving. I am learning everything about filmmaking and art here on KZbin. Sometimes I feel like it is too late for acting but stories like yours remind me that it’s not. Thank you for this video :)

Never too late for anything, my friend. The arts can be challenging but are so worth pursuing especially nowadays where we can create on our own. The acting world is insanely competitive and fickle so keep on creating those shorts and telling the stories you want to tell. At the end of the day that's what matters the most anyway. Just always keep creating :)

What an amazing video man, really awesome topic and how this was all shot and edited together. *chefs kiss* And you said no one really watches your short films, I do! And they are awesome! You’ve done some amazing stuff so far and it’s great to see what you get upto next. And congrats on the second gym! Hope it carries on going well. Super inspiring video bro!!

First, I really love your film/video making style. You've given me so many ideas with just this video. You're REALLY good. Second, I'm 56 and I'm just about to launch my YT channel about mid-life (buckle up, that's next for you) and the transition into elderhood. For people like me, hearing someone say "I'm not too old to do this" and they are 30, makes me snicker for just a second, but really, I get it. Many of us have had the same idea that we should have it all figured out by 30, but the good news is that there is SO much more to figure out. And the path between where you are now and where you are going is going to be filled with joys and sorrows you can't even imagine right now. You will have massive successes and painful failures and all of it will make you who you will be and you'll be so thankful for each iteration of yourself. Keep doing what you're doing and I look forward to following along.

I really appreciate the kind words :) I've learned to enjoy where I'm at and to be excited for what's to come because there's no stopping or slowing things down anyway. May as well enjoy the ride.

this is very real, m someone who hasnt accomplished anything big while everyone around is me more or less an over achiever. But when i turned 26 this Feb i thought of changing things, started actually using and learning how to use my camera (m sort of proud of the results) took some interest in color grading and ended up creating a LUT. and now i am thinking about learning story telling before i join my office as a lawyer this May. Anyone can become anyone if they work enough towards it

Bro a lawyer at 26 is such an accomplishment most would love to have. I think we can just always think the grass is greener. You'll always have time to create and you have something stable coming as well so that's a great combo!
