I am 81 years old and have worried about death most all of my life until recently,. Now when my life is down to just a few more years, I no longer fear death. The freeing thought for me was realizing that when my brain dies, I won't know I'm dead, just like all those billions of year before I was born. It's like this will be my second death. You are dead. Through some amazing luck, you become consciously aware of your existence for a handful of years and then you go back non-existence. My advice to younger generations is to SLOW DOWN AND LOOK AROUND you. Just take in your surroundings, Notice the kindnesses and connections of human beings to one another. Notice and appreciate the connections to the environment around us that is in perfect balance to protect you from radiation, give you the exact right amount of air to breath and magically turn the sun's rays into food. This is a chant I say to myself: "So lucky to be here now, wonder what will happen next?"

Death is not evil. It’s beautiful. Without it, there wouldn’t be life. Life and death go hand in hand. There no reason to fear death. Do not rush death, it’s guaranteed at one point or another. Live your beautiful life in the physical realm. Your soul traveled for a long time to get to this point. Our bodies are physical, our minds and souls are intangible. When the body goes, the soul is released back to infinity from where we came. It’s nothing to be feared, it’s simply returning home. Wherever that may be, or what it may look like.

Respectfully, I disagree. There are plenty of reasons to fear death. We're basically wired to fear it. It's possible to embrace it, but to embrace it doesn't necessitate an absence of fear. I don't think there's any inherent issue with fearing it. I've thought a lot about death since my grandfather died when I was 5. I've gone through many phases and schools of thought about it. I've only finally accepted that I fear it just as much as I know it's inescapable and necessary.

@@lukashughes6466 I appreciate your perspective. Our differences in view points & thought process is what makes our souls unique - despite us both being humans with similar physical functions. To me, there is nothing to fear because of the inevitability. It’s the one guarantee in our highly variable and ever changing lives. At the end of the road is the same fate as billions upon billions of living creatures have already experienced. It’s gives life a bitter sweet tone. My grandmothers last words, as she lay incoherent and on the verge were “I’m ready to go home”. That always stuck with me. She was at peace in her last moments. Drifting between our reality and the peaceful void. We were already dead before we were born, and didn’t suffer the slightest inconvenience. I think that’s quite beautiful.

Death is not evil. You fear death for the same reason you fear darkness or unfamiliar sounds. Life fears what it doesn't understand because being known is a disadvantage in survival. But darkness itself can't hurt you. Death itself won't kill you. It's what uses the unknown that you should fear. But just because you fear something, doesn't make it evil. that's not why everyone fears death. a lot of us fear death because we know the implications of it. we experience human joy and positive emotions and we know exactly what will happen after we die - we won't experience these any more. our loved ones will miss us. we won't be able to take care of the things we took care of in life. if we have children, they'll lose a parent. our friends might lose a great friend. we won't see any more sunsets or fall asleep to the sound of rain. it's not that we're afraid of the unknown, we're afraid of losing what we know we love and leaving others behind.

I'm not afraid of death, although I'm also not in any hurry. Imagine if our bodies didn't die. Imagine being 50,000 years old. 100,000 years old. 1 million years old. At some point you will be so interminably bored that you'd *want* to end it. I believe our inner consciousness is eternal, and is a little chunk of the "master consciousness" of the universe. When we die, those experiences are integrated back into the master consciousness. Then that chunk of consciousness comes back to have another, mostly disconnected experience (although the idea that sometimes there is remnant memory fascinates me, and also saddens me that most people who have experienced that have those memories forced out by their parents not understanding). Treat each other well. Make someone's in-the-moment experience brighter. That's more valuable than every penny in the world combined.

Whatever happens after death could be completely random every time one dies. One might experience life from the perspective of a familymember or reincarnate as a dinosaur. Maybe one wakes up on a strange exotic planet one life, and experiences a hell-dimension the next. Between lifes there might also be intervals of complete nothingnes that last eternities.

When I was 8 years old, I didn’t believe in God. I thought that was nonsense; only the material world is real, and everything else is wishful thinking. I remember lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, terrified that one day I would cease to exist. I couldn’t even compute it. One day, all of my memories are going to be gone? I was horrified for years and years. It was my waking nightmare. I didn’t even want to think about it. Because when I did, all I felt was darkness and emptiness. Until I made my peace with it. Out of body experiences after dying under general anesthesia stories are quite interesting. Especially all the ones involving people who were born blind. There's more to this place than what it looks like. Observe enough factors and it's easy to infer. Some of us have gone there. The most profound aspect of that place is that every bit of your perception fully comprehends that it is HOME.

I think we have to be careful with how we define “death” if a person has returned whether it be from the heart stopping, the breath stopping, loss in body temperature, etc… has that person truly experienced death? Of course there is "something" after death, no one can deny that. But if you identify solely with the ego, your thoughts, your memories - then yes, there is nothing. But if you realize that ego identity is just an illusion, temporary, and changing; then you realize that everything carries on. You aren't the same person today as yesterday, or as last year, that "person" is already dead. So what's the difference? Proof that there is something after death? You are generalizing the question, your answer, and the statement of there being something after death. Logically thinking, when someone ask that question, they are referring to the soul, and/or consciousness, still being as it is when our bodies are alive. A few days ago I found out that I have a mouse in my apartment. So my plan was to catch it and release somehow. I wasn't going to buy a mousetrap for just one. Then a few hours ago I was going to take a hot bath like I do from time to time. I have a small bathroom and I filled it with hot water, washed my body. When I was in the bathtub I could hear something scratching plastic and I thought it was weird. When I got out I found the mouse dead in a plastic bucket in the bathroom. I think it dead to the heat that I have created when I filled the bathtub with hot water, the moisture in the air, the close space, the heat resulted into mouse's demise. Or maybe it's died of starvation, although I could hear it scratch the bucket in agony I believe, or as it was trying to climb out of it

A million years of getting up every day and doing the same thing over and over. Not to mention how crowded it would get on this planet. How could we ever recognize being alive had we not been dead before? As that other commenter had said, "try to remember the time before you were born". Trust the cycle. Another interesting thing that I've discovered on my personal journey is that what you are doing right now, big or small, will have a growing impact on the future, you leave traces of yourself behind in everyone you meet, and everything you touch, so therefore everything and everyone they meet contains a part of you and vice a versa. We are manifestations of our ancestors enjoying the work of our most ancient ancestors, our future generations will be manifestons of us enjoying our work. All i know is I wasn’t here for billions of years, 26 years ago. My parents didn’t have sex or meet yet, and I was just a thing. Life is this. Exactly what you’re feeling now. The only reason you’re alive is because your heart mind and everything else in your body is doing its part. You feel because your central nervous system and emotions because of your brain. You see because the eyes and so on. Death is the complete opposite of life. No fear, no colors, no breathing, no us. We are proof in the pudding that we are once. You, I and everyone else will exist once. When you decay, you will never exist again. Death is the end of life, that’s it.

When I realized that I am not my body, death became powerless over me:. Mind you, I still have to wrestle the anxious, raw panic that attempts to engulf me entirely when I, in a moment, become acutely aware of my mortality. That moment can - under some extreme inner-strength nothing short of divine intervention (or adrenaline! lol) - be overcome. The fear accompanying one's own mortal demise can be defeated. The pain of death is something else even some self-immolating master zen Buddhists cannot all overcome. Yet, since some do, it is possible! The death of the body is not the end. Since the zen Buddhist monks who did successfully overcome both pain and death cannot give first-hand accounts, the only proof can come by experience, and it can not be shared. Sadly.

Ive met my Dopplegänger three times. The second time, I was woken up at 3am, feeling a presence in the room, I rolled over in bed.. and there I was.. knelt down with my hands placed on the bed, smirking.. he was younger than me, about 21.. im in my 30s now.. This might comfort others who are trapped in the thought of the meaningless of existence, when you're thinking about the meaningless of life, are you actually experiencing the meaningless? is meaningless a tangible thing? Or are you simply just trapped in your brains attempts to link meaningless to the physical world? Meaningless isn't an experience, its a mindset. Meaningless isn't real but experience actually is, so when you think of it, stop trying to imagine your life "as it" because the experience isn't linked to a thought or a mindset, it just is. Human experience is a genuine, real, experientiable thing. Meaningless is merely our brains conceptualisation of it.

ROBERT (and everyone reading): we are on the same page for appreciating the deeper mystery of everything butttt words have their limits my guy. the MIND will not THINK its way to transcendence. yet we all know by the INTUITIVE FEELING of the HEART that there is something deeper, larger, greater, quieter, invisible-er than this humanoid experience. i.e. the subtext of this wonderful video essay of yours ;) you are very much correct that no one can 'know' via standard processes of the brain, which is wired for a physical animal survival/well-being at its root. those more developed parts of the brains allow us to RECEIVE, in our awareness, further complexity and profundity from the Source Field of Consciousness rather than CREATING the conscious experience. the privileged few who experience and recognize (REMEMBER) the unadulterated ground nature of Being, be it ceremony or recreation, have no fear nor worry of death, as they (we?) know it is the most common and beautiful of transitions from one plane to the next. It is like taking off a tight shoe, well worn. there is a larger story, agenda, adventure, unfolding through the limitless deaths and births on the physical plane, and we are all (lucky to be) a part of it. :) to understand more of this, one has to become receptive to shifting the window of your context of what is 'TRUE' (get some fresh air, open that thing). this is, for better or worse, experiential, which is why I again suggest the many tools and resources humans now have at their disposal to open another eye of the Mind (and heart)... of course, be smart about it. peace & love

I don't often remember dreams when I sleep. The time passes, and I am only aware of it because the sun came up or the clock changed. Things might have happened when I slept that I had no perception of but I only know that from stories or evidence. Like how I percieve the time before I was born. This is how I picture the nothingness of death. The difference is that I do not wake up, and I cannot perceive that the time has passed. This is not a problem. Mid sleep, I do not miss the time I had already been sleeping as I am still not perceiving that time.

Consciousness never dies, only the ego. The author views this from the materialist view. The idealist knows better. It is really consciousness that breaks science. We have no idea where it resides or how it works. Can anything exist outside of subjective experience? I think most would agree not. Science itself is always seen through the lens of perception. Consciousness creates the universe. Materialism is dead man, where have you been. Read some more Descartes, consciousness is primary and quantum physics points to this.

I don't find death paradoxical at all. It's not simply not understandable bc of our limited subjective experience: it's utterly unkowable, bc all of its essence is the very lack of that experience. Therefore, it isn't a mystery, bc it's not something out of our reach: it's not even something. It's nothing. So there is nothing to understand. To base a philosophy and an entire view of life on something that doesn't even exist is futile. The only thing that is meaningful is life.
