Almost just purposely walked into a truck on the road omw to my car but stopped myself at the last second, then almost broke down at the fact I still stopped myself. I instinctually care about myself regardless of what others think. It’s always been this way. I don’t have insecurities, I’m fine with myself and think I’m objectively good at being a person, but I can’t find love regardless of how I view and present myself, and it’s always been this way.

Insightful - I could definitely see my past self in the perfectionist seeking acceptance mindset. It’s not a dynamic that ceases to be but rather it evolves to be more healthy upon letting go of those past rigid expectations. Instead focusing on slowly improving and giving myself elbow room to take on that growth and try to understand the circumstances that prevent or slow it when they are there. Thanks again for this video of psychology and philosophy on these themes.

I would say "Weak" or "Victims" that were not raised properly/to be strong, by clueless and weak parents. You get your whole character and habits in your early years of life. Also, I think depression is physical, something in the brain is rotting, disconnected, clogged or else. Could be food or exercise or something else. Everything is physical. On another topic (could be connected to this one, idk) if someone reads this, I would recommend watching video essays on Nietzsche more specifically "Genealogy of Morals" (Remove the virtue signaling of the presenters/"their opinions" and just listen to what he said and come to your conclusions) If you want to understand the zeitgeist of humanity and human history.

Has anyone ever overcome depression altogether? Especially of this kind? It feels like the changes needed for this as stated in the video are insurmountable in nature, like actually becoming aware of every single one of these self-told stories or not letting societal expectations get to you when you are forced to be part of society as it currently is. It just seems impossible to achieve, at least within a reasonable amount of time.
@georgeabreu6392
@georgeabreu6392 3 сағат бұрын
@@subatenome I’m not sure what overcoming depression ‘altogether’ would mean. I think there is always a leftover sense of what caused it but as one grows beyond it, you’re able to look back at it with the perspective and ability to not fall on the same self-told stories that caused the dissonance between your actual self and your imagined idealized self which caused the depression to begin with. Fundamentally, It’s helpful to think of small steps given your situation; understanding yourself as you are now and trying to figure out small changes in routines that could, over small increments eventually bring about the desired overall state you want for yourself. Also preventing or slowly removing bad habits by making similarly small choices. In my experience the final goal of that should have constant reassessment as you go. Somethings will work others not, it’s just about the slow improvement. It’s like becoming affluent at a craft, except it’s life. But there are others around who can help and give advice, again just like a craft. Hopefully my perspective helped a bit.

Kind of, its strange. My life hasn't much changed since I 'overcame' depression. I'm still not in a relationship, I still have the same friends etc. If anything things have become materially worse as I'm now separated by distance from a lot of the people I know and I'm living in a worse place. But over the years I have generally become a much more contented person, doing things I didn't think I would ever be able to do when I was depressed, like solo travelling abroad or learning a new language. To overcome it I guess it really comes down to 'thinking positive' which I know sounds like a massive piss take at the moment with the current state you may be in. But it really is as simple as the next time you think something negative about yourself or the world, you challenge it with a positive spin or interpretation. And yes at first you will likely laugh at this positive spin and not believe it in the slightest, but over time it will become much more credible and that's when you can kind of 'overcome' depression. Even something as simple as just holding a belief that things will get better will slowly pull you out of depression. Of course this doesn't mean you'll never be sad again, or even depressed. But once you can pull yourself out of the depths generally you will be able to set up good habits that will keep you out of depression. Hopefully this helps.

Sisyphus, what really ensnares me about this claim is the why of it all. How do we determine what is good and what is bad? Is it relative to a higher power or faith structure? I don't know a way to determine whether or not all of us are burdened by original sin, whether or not death is salvation for those of us who are moral enough to feel a cosmic guilt. Let's define what good is before I continue. I examine good and bad relative to practicality, practicality for what one happens to be going for. Practical = good, where Impractical = bad. If one happens to be going for the approval of a higher power, a deity, then whatever happens to be good for that is good. The thing is, it's next to impossible to be certain what such a deity wants, what is good for that deity, or whether or not it's tilting at windmills to behave as though the deity exists in the first place. It takes faith to determine the qualia we've got in our possession to be evidence of this deity existing, or evidence of this deity not existing. Even for agnostics, it takes faith to determine that it's even possible for one outcome to be the case. To even consider the possibility is an application of faith, a best guess that one happens to run with. So, in short, we're required to assume something in order to interact with any part of this system. Assuming that our actions are practical for our objectives requires faith. People can only have one objective at one time, though they can oscillate between objectives at a fast enough rate to produce the illusion of something being both good and bad. To even step into the objective of there being some cosmic good to service, some moral imperative to suffer, is to cross a threshold only surpassable with faith. To interact with this objective at any meaningful capacity is to cross a similar threshold, assuming that one's actions are good for its accomplishment. With this problem diagnosed as an irrational assumption it seems as though the only antidote, remedy against, is an equal and opposite irrational assumption. Therefore, good people can get depressed for no reason. Good people can be happy for no reason too. Whatever it is, just do your best because it's just what you do.

To my understanding of this video, depression is simply people being perfectionists and failing to be their idea of the perfect version of themselves in society, but that image of themselves is also created by society and not the individual. Here a good person is just defined as someone who feels bad about not meeting society's vision of their ideal self and i assume then a bad person just doesnt feel bad about not meeting this ideal. The good person avoids depression by revaluating and updating what that ideal is supposed to look like and make it more flexible, so that it isnt so rigid. I disagree with this, if this is the correct interpretation of what i just watched.

phrasing it like that means that you're defining depression based on the person himself, i mean, if only good people get depressed, then depression is something that only good people experience, and since this "good" is in the context of the subjective experience of the person himself, like finding that something he define himself by is challenged by the real world, so he feel bad about himself, and because he felt bad now, it means that he felt good just before, meaning that he's a good person at least to your interpretation of the situation, as you see, there's a leap here, the whole point you're making is about defining good as the opposite of bad which isn't news, and because depression is a subjective experience, you're defining depression itself through a subjective lens, but even that depression is actually a subjective experience, it doesn't mean that there's no objective conceptual definition of it, i mean, even if it is complex to reach a complete objective definition because there's always the subjective dimension of it, you can define it in an objective way referencing the subjective dimension even if not explicitly getting into it.
