Machiavelli was a disappointed idealist. He was a proponent of the Florentine Republic and was tortured for his beliefs. He saw that humans act in ways that were and are not in accordance with what they preach. He simply held up a mirror to society and that society didn’t (and still doesn't) like it.

Personally I love philosophy especially ones that are similar to Neoplatonism, but have come to understand some years ago that while high virtues are idolized in the collective human psyche (as seen with religions, superheroes etc.), it is more often times than not those who are most willing to employ Machiavellian tactics that reach the highest rungs of society! Humanity as a whole and especially a small demographic of humanity can develop an extreme desire to have POWER, usually more so as an ends within itself rather than as a means to achieving something greater than the desire itself! When you mix this in with pride, selfishness, greed, cunning, manipulative etc. It means that there will probably never truly be peace on Earth unless something extraordinary takes place within humanity, to facilitate some sort of universal harmony.

The problem with Machiavellianism in its pure form is that you make so many enemies climbing over bodies to get to the top, that you have an army of people who are looking for any chance to depose you and will work in concert to do so. What's more, the people you stepped upon on your way to the top will be the same people you meet on your way down. This is why most tyrannical leaders don't die of old age. Even Stalin's death was oddly timed before his purge of the doctors and scientists in the Soviet Union. His official cause of death would always be ruled "natural" but he had random deadly seizure in the middle of the night that nobody attended to? On the eve of a huge purge that would've destroyed the USSR and Russia for generations. The people around Stalin knew that if they got rid of all their scientists and doctors, they'd destroy themselves. How do we infer this motive for regicide existed? Because after Stalin died, the purges were immediately canceled. When a long-planned program is canceled the day after the leader dies, it's obvious that those who took power also wanted it canceled before the leader died.

I in fact love the mean and kind type, they're not that common but they're always worth interacting with.

11:56 I heard this described as a one sided contract. One person holds another person to some expectation, without the other person having agreed to or even knowing about the expectation. I forget the exact name they used, but it’s very common. Just think about all the expectations you have of others that they don’t know about and/or haven’t agreed to. Or them of you.

This is called a "covert contract" where someone does something for another expecting something in return without stating it.

Effectiveness strictly requires attention to morality in exactly the same way that Intelligence is inextricably codependent on morality. You can only be truly smart or effective IF you are also adhering to strong morality. Without Morality, "effectiveness" is just a paperclip maximizer.

even if you can launch rockets into space, if you are immoral then you are stupid (take Elon Musk as an example.)
@uncletrashero2 ай бұрын
i think this is a product of determinism ultimately. because essentially everything objective is also arbitrary. there is no "purpose" to amoral objectivity. its nothing more than observation and even bugs do observation. observation alone is irrelevant at larger scales. you must attach Morality to any endeavor or the endeavor has no point. If we are not striving to solve moral problems and orchestrate the future in accordance to moral values, then there is no point in any action whatsoever, and that means it can not be "effective" if it is simply pointless. Thus morality is strictly required to create "effectiveness" or "purpose" as morality is the subjective variable that gives value or meaning to any action or thought.

Honesty in "The Prince" shines through every page, and every seeker of power, command and dominion should read this cold, heartless yet logical, treatise on rule and governance. I think the title is a little misleading as you can apply the "blueprints" to the common man and society just as well. For those not power crazy it's still a great read, epecially if you desire to be noble, good, and most all, effective.

'the gulf between how one should live and how one does live is so wide that a man who neglects what is actually done for what should be done moves towards self-destruction rather than self-preservation. The fact is that a man who wants to act virtuously in every way necessarily comes to grief among so many who are not virtuous. Therefore if a prince wants to maintain his rule he must be prepared not to be virtuous, and to make use of this or not according to need.' Love The Prince.

While both are powerful and useful, love is more enduring than fear, and therefore stronger, while fear may have utility at certain inflection points but not others, and therefore is weaker. I think leaders who are Machiavellian by definition, need instability and the opportunities of chaos to leverage fear, which makes our world worse. At some point, humans need to intentionally cast off the chains of our primate brains and accept-stop being fearful of, what are truly capable of in this abundant world we’ve been gifted.
@evanhadkins55322 ай бұрын
I only read/write English. So I can't get a feeling for if Machiavelli was being ironic / sarcastic. As he was addressing someone who'd sacked, this is a possibility I think. (Saying that someone should be feared rather than liked seems to have many resonances.)

Don’t do to others what you wouldn’t want done to you - this should be a universal motto ? Why we aren't promoting empathy and compassion, religions deciding on a universal golden rule then try to reduce conflict and encourages self-reflection I'd love someone to argue on this statement ?
@mewe10232 ай бұрын
Because we become more selfish than ever, even if our ancestors were bad and did some horrible things, they sticked to certain principles and morals but now..We are following relative moralism and I don't think this gonna end well.
@stfranckmusic2 ай бұрын
@@mewe1023 Selfishness often has a negative connotation, but if it's paired with consciousness and awareness of the world, it can take on a new meaning (that's my previous comment above). It could be about prioritizing your own needs and growth while still recognizing and respecting how your actions affect others. But it feels that people really don't learn to think anymore. There's a balance between self-care and empathy that allows for personal development without losing sight of the larger picture. This should be a golden rule
@TremblingQualifier2 ай бұрын
Because a good chunk of the population actively works against those values on the daily. Others also act rather passively. It's important to promote empathy and compassion but it shouldn't come at great costs of your own well-being, especially if you are the type to more naturally feel like you aren't giving enough empathy and compassion.
@alexman3782 ай бұрын
I think it’s more like what Robert Greene said about the 48 Laws of Power. You don’t have to agree, you shouldn’t think in terms of “good and bad”, just in that, if you’re going to play that kind of game, this type of thinking is necessary.

Machiavellie also encouraged respecting people and treating them well. No one focuses on his "ecceptions to his rules." He encouraged deliberate choice of tactic, good and bad, not straight cruelty. It all depended on the circumstances. Amongst humans, evil is more effective at achieving success. It's our nature. That requires us to make a choice of how to live. You CAN be effective and good. But you will never rise beyond medium leadership roles.
@FloodgateStudioАй бұрын
I've always been drawn to Kant's philosophies. It's a fallacy to believe we can truly advance, both individually & collectively, by pushing others down and living selfishly. Society is inevitable, and our individual success not only benefits from, but also depends on the success of those around us. It's a paradox: if everyone shared this perspective, we would all flourish. However, when some choose to prioritize only their own interests, everyone ultimately suffers. Fear is not stronger than love, but it is louder.

I don’t believe personally in Christianity or anything else for that matter. I do however completely agree with the underlying point that gets across though about human nature. We are in large numbers horrifically bad at making decisions for a long term prosperous future for us/future generations more then not. Often we are too dumb to think for our selfs so we adopt whatever narrative is popular, ironically we are also suckers for a shiny con man story that looks good from the front but has nothing behind it as opposed to the gritty yet honest truth and what needs to be done to prosper.

@@MonkeyLiggaScrumptiousNan i dont think it has everything to do with the amount of people, there will always be people who think for them selves and people who just mindlessly go with whatever is the common consensus, im often called a contrarian for that reason, sometimes i happen to be wrong like with Minecraft i at first wrote it of as a dumb trend, but when i tried it for myself i saw how good it was, but rather frequently its the masses who jump to conclusions and spread opinions that they gave next to no thought, i feel like every person is capable of thinking for themselves and being open minded, and i feel like a lot more people are open minded then we may see on the surface, on the internet most people in the comments seem like an idiot but when i go outside and actually talk to strangers or go to a friend's house or have pleasant interactions at a concert there are so many amazing beautiful people in this world, for as long as we live things will not be perfect until we are in heaven, i used to be non religious as well so i get it completely, of course i hope that god will reveal himself to you the same way he did for me, and i know he will because he cares about you and wants only what is best for you and for you to let him in to your life so you can see the light, which probably sounds weird i know but yeah, there is a lot of misconceptions about Christianity and what it means to believe in God, God bless you homie.

its seems every time I'm nice it just bites me. I gave a man a ride as far as I could while heading to work. It was a nice talk but then after I drop him off he just asks for more. I didnt have anything to give him and he gives me a disappointed look. I didnt carry cash on me and say sorry man. Most recently I helped my sister build some table for her she ordered. No one wanted to help her so she asks me. She was grateful but then just started bugging me more often and barging into my room without knocking I'm a single adult male. I need and want my privacy. My mother. I help her one day with watering her plants and she was so happy she assumed I was going to do it for her everyday and brags to her friends how her "sweet" child was helping her. I feel the guilt of not doing it everyday.
