Terry, I took a leap of faith and traded my A6 for an A8 - I got a fantastic deal! I loved the A6 and was pleased with it in my 5 month tenure - once it 'burned-in' and top end settled. The A8 is a step above in all departments - with soundstaging, imaging and space augmented by a much smoother top end and a tighter bass. It would be an interesting comparison indeed between the A8 and the Audiolab. I used to own an 8300 CDQ and found that to be good, and I reckon I 'know' the typical Audiolab sound you identify. My A8 is used solely as a streamer feeding my TT2 and MScaler - perhaps that could be future review comparison: Audiolab & A8 solely as streamers?

Good call. Like many have figured out by now A6 ME was a good step up from A6 and A8 does the same again. LPS do close the gap too the A8. This comparison to be fair is beyond unfair looking at price point, but when it fits the narrative 🫢

Thanks for the video. Appreciate what you bring to the hifi world. Personally I wouldn’t use the A6 as a preamplifier. Comparing a 3k streaming pre/Dac to a $850 isn’t really a fair comparison. My curiosity would be the comparison as a streaming DAC into an analog preamp or integrated, as I think this is how most people will use it. I could be wrong.

Yes it could be the the way someone goes to maybe get the features of the everolo and the nice app. The whole point here is with the audiolab you can get it all in one and then use a different app maybe Roon or JPLAY if you want a different app user experience.

I talk to eversolo on email about the difference on all three units when just used as a streamer and there is really no difference when using digital audio outs. So external dac is the way to go and you get a quality streamer.
@amb3cog Жыл бұрын
@@ericelmore887That’s not what either of them were talking about though? They were talking about using it as a streamer/DAC into an integrated. In that situation there’s no need for an external DAC. And really the only reason I would personally buy it myself. ✌️

The Brits got it right way back when they emphasized the source as the most important ingredient in making good sound. While I use an Auralic G1.1 streamer, I am sure I'd love the 9000. I own their CDT 9000 cd transport and think highly of it. My only criticism of Audolab is they could offer more output options on their digital sources. Aside from that, love it.

Interesting review. Thanks Terry. I am confused by this product though. It has the same DAC as the 9000a and it’s own preamp stage. So why would a 9000a owner pair it with the 9000n? You would be paying for the same functionality twice. Am I missing something?
@PursuitPerfectSystem Жыл бұрын
I expected my review to be exactly that comparing those two things to see which one offered the better DAC etc. I started by using it as just a streamer and DAC but after I tested it as the streamer DAC and Pre is when I got the best results. Yes you could use it with the 9000a and it sucks to pay twice for the same feature I agree, but you can also bigger with the amp than whats in the 9000a with the 9000n which opens up a lot more possibilites. Excellent review again. I am a fan of Audiolab and have a 6000cdt that I enjoy very much. I use it as a transport because I use a Denafrips Hermes DDC. This DDC has a galvanically isolated USB input that now provides a Bluesound with PD creative power supply via an expensive USB cable. I have been looking for an upgrade for streaming for a while and I think it is a shame that the 9000N does not have a USB output. Why does Audiolab choose this? Greetings Jakob
@brooksc9004 ай бұрын
Thanks Terry. Good one. I believe the source is the key. I still ride with a Bluesound Node with the LHY modification as I like BlueOS. A decent external DAC provides decent listening but I have been waiting for something much better to come along. Am looking at the Audiolab 9000N and that special sound. Lumin music streamers like the Lumin X1 with an ES9038 pro DAC on board are very expensive at nearly $14,000 - way too rich for my blood. By comparison, the Audiolab 9000N with a Lumin OS, plus a top ESS DAC seems a steal. Cheers.
@offbeatinstruments Жыл бұрын
I only use my A6 as a transport, as I also found the DAC output thin and unrewarding. Instead I feed it into an old Shanling DAC50, which vastly improved the sound stage and gave it a more vinyl-like sound quality. It's not to everyone's taste, but I love the vinyl like sound I get from the combination. I'm not so keen on all-in-one solutions like the Audiolab though, they limit upgrading to bigger steps and I prefer to change one aspect at a time to make sure I am making positive changes. Having said all that, there is something satisfying about being able to get a one box solution and stop caring about the upgrade bug.

Terry, great review. Appreciate you adding some context to the A6 hype cycle. First review compared and A6 to a lumin and suggested it was better! Also appreciate your A6 vs WiiM review. It would be great to see something in 2024 that focuses simply on the best streaming transports considering just sound quality and app experience. For me these are the two things that matter. Not too fussed re internal dacs etc. Also appreciate you asking for Dirac support on the streamer side. I have a Buchardt a500 with platin hub + WiiM mini on optical so no analogue. The only thing that allows me to bring Dirac is the mini Dsp but looks like it doesn’t permit a full digital signal path unless I fork out £600+ for the privilege which doesn't seem worth it, considering the platin hub already has room correction. Glad to hear they’ve ditched Play-Fi. I have a 6000A Play and I ditched it for a Bluesound Node 2i with 8300XP and 8300CDQ. Playfi doesn’t stream direct to the device; instead, it relies on your phone or laptop to stream it to the device. It is totally reliant on your phone/laptop and turning off the DTS app or losing network connection will kill the stream. It turned a great product into one I regretted the first time I used it.
