The very first advice I ever got for racing crits was to get a data page on my CPU with only speed and time. Speed to understand the pace, rhythm and how hard you can go into the corners and time to keep tabs on how much time is left in the race. No matter how hard your HR is or what kind of crazy watts you're doing, you have no choice but to ''follow the race'' and seeing that you're at your limit will not give you more confidence or an advantage.

@TristanTaillon agreed mate. The only data screens I use in the crit are " time elapsed, average speed, and average power.

I have different screens for different race types. I fully agree on the "HR irrelevant, you have to go when you have to go" but would suggest the same for speed - if someone else is hitting a corner quicker are you going to drop the wheel because you believe your GPS is telling you you cannot go that fast around that corner? It would be interesting to hear how much seeing the high HR affected this racer's tactics at the end of the race. When I see max HR I go the other way and wonder if I can push it higher haha

@@aarondcmedia9585 I should have added that I also use speed to understand if the pack is actually going ''fast'' or not to decide when to move up or not. And about cornering, I consider myself an ''above-average pilot'' on the bike so I won't always follow blindly someone at their preferred speed. I allow myself to slow down and make my own choice even if it'll cost me some watts. And naturally, even if my game plan is never to attack or go in the break(I'm the protected sprinter in my team), I do have a screen I can go to with all the data.

just adding to this, I used to run power, HR, Speed etc etc on my race screen but HR would always get in my head and I wouldn't jump in a move if I saw numbers that were 'too high'. Now days, I run Time & Speed. Speed is only handy for when you're in a break, and knowing how fast you need to ride to stay ahead of the chasing pelo! Thanks all for watching and your comments! :)

I saw your results at these champs and was hoping you'd post the videos - you did really well, well done.

Why is the race so short ?

It was a pretty tough course... but can't give an exact reason why.
