G'day Rod , great content the dyno would hilight any problems with the auto saving time and money fitting and having to remove the auto. The run sheet would give the customer confidence the auto has been rebuilt correctly.

I have seen a dyno run with a manual gear box showing torque and power curves throughout the full range of gears and it showed the drop off of torque as the gears went from 4th ie 1:1 to 5th and 6th overdrives with lowering torque figures. This dyno run by Andrew from Berima Diesel was showing why towing heavy with a manual gear box is best achieved in 4th gear and not the overdive gears that were weaker and produced more heat and did not save a user any fuel in overdrive gears towing heavy. Is it the same for autos in that the overdrive gears in auto was not for heavy towing and that towing heavy in overdrive produced more heat and stress and was a weaker drive line for heavy towing with reduced torque and no benefit in fuel savings over the 4th 1:1 ratio? Is heavy towing with an auto best done in 4th gear?

Steve it is almost the same for autos, however not always forth gear but certainly 1-1 ratio. In saying this this would only be in cases when towing 1.8 ton or greater. But on a cool day with the wind behind you helping you along then nothing wrong with letting the auto run to an upper gear. Also anything under 1.8Ton towing really won't require you to intervene in any way.

Yes 900Nm is about what we say it will handle but and we have seen it run much higher but it is very dependent on the driver’s abilities to be sensible with that much power.
