Hi Nike, Great to see that you have now completed you first overnight sail. It looked like you really enjoyed yourself, a terrific acheivement. I noticed you did the right thing and wore your safety life line. It did raise a question in my mind if it is long enough to take you behind Karl if you fell overboard. I cannot recall seeing if you have a boarding ladder permanently on the stern. If you have a stern ladder you will most probably be able to return to Karl safely. If you do not have permanent boarding ladder, you will be unable to get back onto Karl. I love your adventure. You are truly an inspiration.
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
Hey Edwin Flynn, Thanks for your concern. I do have a permanent bathing platform on the back with a ladder attached to it. And usually I run my lifelines all the way to the back and then I can reach it. But I always wanted to do a trial under way with some friend on board but did not do it yet...:( It's on the list...!!! Just a suggestion, please keep one jackline (for attaching your harness) along the centerline of the boat. A jackline along the edge of the hull gives you a false sense of security when leaving the cockpit, but is dangerous because it won't prevent you from falling overboard and you won't be able to climb back in. A jackline along the center of the boat with a short tether will keep you safe on the boat even in rough conditions.

***** I guess a test would be to get off the boat while anchored and tethered and try to get back on board. I've had visions of someone finding my boat trailing a tether and harness with a few bones left.

Good Job Nike! No worries Karl will take care of you as long as you take care of him; which YOU DO. No Fishing Tackle? those Flying fish make good bait. and it's kind of the fringe benefit of sailing; fresh Mahi Mahi (aka Dorado,or Dolphin) or fresh tuna. Take care, and keep a weather eye out, Hurricane season you know. PLEASE keep that harness and teather on while underway. We LOST two young men in the Gulf Stream when they're 19ft centerconsol motorskiff capsized off the coast of Florida about a month or so ago.

You may be too busy to reply, but I wonder about a couple of things.....Due to the time lapse of posting your videos, where are you now and do you plan to cruise as far as Cuba eventually ? May I suggest that you look at a book on sail trim - by paying attention to sail trim you can gain 0.5 to 1 knot which may not sound like much - convert that to distance and time - 12 to 24 nautical miles over a 24 hour period or at 5 knots boat speed, you save 2.5 to 5 hours in time

Hey Jerry Densmore, I have two self steering systems. A tiller pilot that runs with electricity and a wind vane that works mechanically and does not use any power :). The latter one is the one I mainly use...if possible. But for mannouvers or when the wind is too low, I use the electriacal one. Ahoy, Nike & Karl

Yes Nike practice of MOB is important so please do schedult it soon. Perhaps you can practice MOB when someone is on board with you to make sure that you will be able to get back on board. Of course as the famous "Murphy 's law" prescribes, we usually fall overboard in bad weather. Practice will increase your chances of returning to the boat even in adverse conditions. PS: About your night lights. As you need to maintain your night vision to keep a lookout at night, I suggest that you use red lamps in your torches, even your forehead torch. Many quality forehead torches now come with a switch to night vision red lamps. However, you can even paint some of your interior lights red with car brakes paint so that even the cabin lights do not rob you of your night vision. You can maintain white lights for reading or cooking as necessary, but your night lights can be painted red to protect your night vision.

I think it's still good to train falling overboard whilst clipped in...to see how you can make it back into the boat. Obviously, if you fall overboard and are not attached, not much to do then when you are solo sailing, that's true :) But I try not to let that happen ;)

I love your videos so real life. You show the good and challenging. Just wondering would you be OK with sharing what you might think your monthly expenses might be.
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
Hi steve hansen, it really depends where I am, what I do, what Karl needs...I have had months in San Blas where I spent less than 200$...and I have had a month in Colombia where I paid 2.000$, autsch!!! So it is really hard to give you a solid number...but maybe this is a small indication. There are lots of blogs that do a detailed spending listing on their site, if you google a bit, I am sure you will find some...I wanted to list some of those links on my website but still did not got round to do it.... As a sailor myself I find great interest in your sail rig. Are you using a "Dutchman system" on your mainsail ? If so do you like it ? I ask this because I just installed this on my vessel but have not yet tried it.
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Tzahal Tavor, hm, are you talking about this lazy jack system where you run stuff kinda zickzagg through your sails? No, I don't have that...Maybe I misunderstood...then let me know :) Ahoy, Nike & Karl

I really enjoy your videos. The sailing is cool, but I'm also intrigued by your seemingly mellow, laid back approach to life. What a wonderful contrast to the stressed out, "success at any cost", knife-your-competitors-in-the-back lifestyle that is all too common today.

Congratulations on your solo journey and your very well-done videos! I have a question: Did this video include segments from an earlier sail with a voice-over from this sail? I ask because there was a scene or two showing an electronic autopilot and no windvane on the stern, and this was followed by a scene showing the windvane on the stern and no electronic autopilot connection to the tiller. Hmmm? :) (Not a complaint; I'm a videographer too and I know about "B-Roll.")
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Don Cline, all of the material is from this sail actually. I do have and use both, an electronic autopilot and my wind vane. It depends, what I am doing and what the conditions are :). But well spotted ;)! Ahoy, Nike

@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын

Isn't it better to use actual courtesy flags as apposed to making one? Is a home made one actually acceptable a a port of call? Love your vids BTW!
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
Hi Ken B, I did buy a "real" one upon arrival. I would say that a home made one is acceptable, yes. It is a courtesy flag after all, no? And sometimes it is not easy to find one before you get to the country...In Honduras, we asked if we could buy a flag somewhere and they just shrugged their shoulders and did not really seem to care too much about it. Guess every country deals a bit differently with it...I think a home made one is better than none... Ahoy, NIke & Karl

WhiteSpotPirates Thank you. I meant any posted opening and closing hours. An acquaintance of mine travels thru South and Central America writing about different gambling casinos there, but if the prizes were nothing but empty tupperware boxes, I don't think its likely to be a booming casino there.

Understandable I was asking more along the lines of food mooring fees etc. not so much maintenance and such.
@WhiteSpotPirates9 жыл бұрын
well, that also depends on the countries ;). Mooring fees I try to avoid as much as possible...They were quite high in Panama, they seem lower here in Guatemala. Did not use any mooring in Colombia or Honduras so cannot tell. Food here in Central America is quite cheap on the street (you can get some good street food for a dollar or two), ok in restaurants (local food is quite cheap, 3 to 7 bucks maybe, more fancy ones between 10 and 15), but veggies and groceries are not too cheap I find...
