I finally got sucked into plowing snow. Happy to say that for this job I was able to use a skid steer with a snow box which was much easier than using a plow.

I was turned on to snowplowing back in 2010 while running a dump truck. They threw me in a pickup plow and told me to have fun. I'm pretty much self taught and I love every minute of it. I've driven highway plow, pickup plows, skids, front loaders and dump trucks while pushing the white gold. Driving a highway plow is boring and doesn't pay well because of the 12 hr limits per shift.... but working parking lots and such in a pickup plow or heavy equipment I'm not limited on hrs. Banger pay checks and I love the quiet, still morning pushing snow. So much so that I now have 2 trucks,1 skid and a couple awesome folks that help me. I spend the winter pushing snow and the summer at my off grid property. I'm basically retired after driving semis 23 yes and often wish I had found snow plowing much earlier lol. It's not for everyone which is evident by how hard it is to find good help but a lot of us are like kids in candy stores when the dollar sign start falling out that sky!

This snow storm they were dying for people to plow, not a lot of operators or machines available. I thought the skid with the snow box handled really well in this parking lot.

Hey Bryan! So I’m a new subscriber, actually only like three days ago😂 But I gotta say I love the content and all the great info! I’ve learned a lot in a little time about the trades, especially earthmoving. I’m 16 years old and this summer when school’s out I’m gonna start earthmoving in the U.P. of Michigan. I’ll be building logging roads for a medium sized logging company. I love the company and I have a great relationship with my bosses as well! I love the experience I’m getting as a shop hand and I actually get along decently well with my coworkers. Any advice you could give for working in forested environments and tight spaces? Any info you’d be willing to give is highly appreciated!

I have no concept of pushing snow: we get none in Northern Australia as it is either Tropical (on the coast) or Outback (dry bushland in the interior). In the southern states, Victoria and New South Wales, at higher altitudes we get more persistant snow over winter. I see minimal up or down movement of the attachment as you push the snow. Is that because the car lot is level, or are there skid pads underneath your attachment that allow for a level ride as you remove the snow? I'm used to having to continually adjust the blade as I grade (if required). Fantastic video. It looks cold, numb and lonely. You're just in the machine pushing and stockpiling snow. I reckon some tunes or a good podcast to listen to helps! Cheers :)
@DieselandIron
@DieselandIron 2 жыл бұрын
I'm originally from Texas so I had to learn how to push snow when I came up north. It's fairly straightforward, you just have to be systematic about it so you aren't chasing windrows all over the parking lot. These boxes have a rubber scrapper on the underside that allow the box to rest on the ground with minimal down pressure. One of the concepts that really drove me nuts in the beginning is that you aren't looking to scrape the parking lot perfectly clean. You will leave a bit of snow and ice residue behind. That will get taken care of by the salt truck. You will run the machine in float mode so you don't tear up your box while it follows the contours of the parking lot. A few 12-30 hour stints in the cab and you will have it down with no problem!😂

@@nicsanta1928 that is more of a typical situation around here as well. This was an odd deal where we got a pretty good storm through and for to the labor shortage a lot of the snow contractors were in a bind. We were hired as a sub at a really good rate because they just needed someone to cover the account. It was a zero tolerance account and they had to have someone there

Ok, so my question is how do you know what area to start first? A square lot is one thing but are you supposed to do the perimeter first or do you start on one section or what. I’ve done my place so many different ways trying to figure out what’s the most efficient way to do it for when I get customer. No one tells you and dudes aren’t very nice when I ask a legit question. Frustrated beyond belief. Can you please advise to some degree Bry, I’d really appreciate it.

The way I handle commercial accounts is different than when I'm just out pushing to clear a lot. Priority during business hours is keeping the major foot traffic areas nice and clean so nobody falls. At the end of the day we are there to prevent injuries and lawsuits. This means I'm getting up close to the building and working my way out to the nearest parking spots first. Once I get those areas cleared up I will focus on clearing the rest of the lot. If we have heavy snow coming down I will periodically go back and rehit the areas up by the building to ensure they are clear. Once the business closes it is a matter of clearing as quick as possible. I generally start up against the building because that's where all the tedious bs is and you generally aren't able to pile snow in those areas. Once I have the area around the building cleared I will start making passes back and forth across the lot. Put snow wherever you are allowed to instead of carrying it across the entire lot. If there is an island where you can pile snow, do it. Over long distances, only use 1/4 - 1/2 of your box so it ends up full by the end of the pass. This avoids chasing windrows all over the place and you are actually more efficient because you aren't having to retouch areas. Hope this helps and good to hear from you again!

This was 20 hours due to it being a zero tolerance contract. As long as the snow was falling we had to be out there pushing. Sectionals blow a standard box out of the water but unfortunately I was stuck with the box the sub contractor dropped for me...
