I think the Foxbat's intimidating reputation was elevated to stratospheric heights by the Israeli Phantom F-4 encounter in the Middle East when pilots patrolling and intercepting a MIG-25 in the premier US fighter at the time were blown away by the Soviet pilots accelerating away at near Mach 3 and up to 70,000 feet. The fact the plane left them in its dust created fear and awe. Nobody, of course, knew the MIG was going all out and causing damage to its engines at that speed. Still, it was more than impressive enough.
