This is not a critique... but a learned tip: travel on what truckers call the "top half" of your fuel tank. Consider a 1/2 tank as empty. Your fuel is always fresh and your better fuel mileage comes from this range... less mineral and rust deposits. This will also save you on vehicle repair costs, longer lasting spark plugs, less carbon in your engine oil, not as much gunk in your fuel lines and filters, and will help your fuel pump last longer. 👍

Is there any chance AAA is in your budget? I have AAA and the confidence it gives me to know that I can get a jump, gas, a tire changed, a tow, and other services is worth the expense for me. I ran out of gas at the mall about a mile from home when I was 16. I called my mom and she came to my rescue, but she told me then I get one “out of gas call” and I’ve used it! I am 64 and have never ran out of gas since…..lol. I’m so happy it all worked out ok! God bless you🙏🏻😀

First, I am truly impressed that you carry an empty gas can with you; good going! I have never done that, and I am the daughter of parents who owned a gas station! Title of this episode could be "Hot Mess" but you really handled the situation with intelligence (not taking a ride from a stranger) and a sense of humor (gas can hanging out of the car driving to Loves--I am so happy you were able to save that little clip; it made my day!). I have never run out of gas in my car, but we almost did in my husband's car many years ago, heading up to Vermont, and no gas stations around for miles. That scared me enough that since then I never let my gauge go below a half-tank. I used to count pennies too, regarding gas prices, but in the past few years I realize that I'd rather have some expensive gas in my car if need be, rather than having to keep looking for better prices. I don't buy coffee out, so figure I can spend my dollars on convenience of getting gas when needed without having to go searching for best prices. Anyway, be proud of yourself, dear Linda! You handled the whole situation with grace under fire!

I’ve pushed it many times running on fumes trying to make a 15 gallon tank stretch getting about 20 mpg. Chasing good gas prices also influences me but this is a good lesson to fill up when you can and/or carry a gas can thx! ⛽️

If my husband was still alive he would have said, "There is a gal right after my own heart!" I had to chuckle through this as every long trip of ours on an Interstate (which we had so many) it was a contest between him and the gas tank. Every exiting was piling time up on the road and slower arrive time to destination. I once helped some German tourists get some gas for their rented motorhome. I drove two of the men to a gas station , bought a jerry can of gas and took them back to their vehicle. It's like they say, 'Sh*t happens.' There are still good people out there.

Glad it all worked out and you can laugh about it now. I’ve only run out of gas once in my life and it was pretty terrifying. I had my toddler son with me and we had to walk quite a ways. That was long before cell phone days. I felt like such a bad mom but I was so broke I didn’t have money for gas. I swore that would never happen again and thankfully it hasn’t. I travel solo like you, but I no 😊longer try and get the best price. I understand it definitely helps but Ive shifted my mindset and am OK paying whatever I need to. I often travel areas Im not familiar with and never want to risk running our so I consider 1/2 tank empty. It’s just what I do but we all need to do what we’re most comfortable with. "Chasing pennies." Of all the things to be obsessive about, putting yourself in this kind of situation, just to save maybe $2 or $3 in gas cost is, IMHO, not worth the hassle. And to then do it >1 time in your life where you run out of gas? The universe is hitting you upside the head & you're not getting the message & then you repeat doing the same thing. I'll never understand why someone would continually do that. Make a new obsession: fill up your vehicle when you have no less than 1/4 tank left, and follow that rule with no exceptions. It will save you $$$ in the long-run AND reduce stress while increasing your safety.

I don't let my gas get below 1/4 or 1/2 tank. Just a bunch of junk in the bottom of gas tank, plus in winter condensation builds up in the tank. Last time I ran out of gas I was in the military working night shift in my way to work in the dark and pouring down rain.😅 I say have a thumbnail w a gas can hanging out if your tank!! 😅

I don't know how old your car is but the older it is the more dirt will be sitting at the bottom of your gas tank. The lower you run the tank the more more of that sediment gets sucked into your fuel pump. I'm pretty sure that a walk to Love's isn't going to fix a clogged fuel pump. If I was you I would adjust your idea of where the empty line is on your fuel gauge and call a quarter of a tank empty. This way you will never be sucking up all that sludge into your fuel filter and your fuel pump will last a lot longer 😊

Wow, this brings back memories when you said you were heading to a rest area for the night....been there on my own....I was still in my forties. Now pushing sixty. I'll be 59 this year. Whatever, it's just a number. I keep on keepin' on. I'm moving back to the southwest to live at my favorite elevation of 7,000 feet. I'm originally from Tampa, Florida and was able to leave in 2011 with zero debt. That's not the case anymore but I'm leaving my present digs where I've lived for about five years in SC....I can't take it anymore. I need mountains in my view. I'm so grateful I got to experience so much in a span of a mere five years, on my own driving thousands of miles by myself. I never was in danger through all of my travels...God was with me and still is. I am closer to Him now. He guided me to SC to grow closer to Him. I begged Him not to make me leave the mountains but He told me I'd be leaving and so, with tears in my eyes I followed His Ways, not my own. I am so hopeful for the future and He will be with me through all. The beautiful southwest will be my final home....unless of course my Father has other plans for me. Saving a few pennies is not worth your life or someone stealing your home while it's stranded on the side of the road. Even when I lived in town I filled up at 3/4 tank because I'm only 4'11" and under 100 lb. I don't need trouble that can be prevented.
