Thank you! You helped me fix a lawnmower I found on the curb two weekends ago. Adjusting the governor spring took less than a second, and now it starts up without any problems! Hope you're having a great summer!

Thanks so much dude, I have seen about 4 or 5 of these videos talking about the springs. But nobody explained the governor was air operated and how it worked, with your video I found and fixed my problem in like 2 minutes. (Piece of metal was blocking the governor plastic piece from fully moving).

Masport and Briggs and Stratton , a great Kiwi -American combination. My Masport 375 Sprint is 25 years old and still going strong . Awesome clip indeed !!

You are the only who addressed the issue that I am having with my Briggs and Stratton quattro lawn mower the way I needed it, and you gave the visuals in such a way that even a novice such as myself could understand it. Thank you bunches!!

I had this problem after changing ignition coil/magneto - I got the wrong one and it was too big so fouling the regulator vane and preventing it moving all the way - hence very high revs thanks for posting - veery helpful

Replace the governor spring before adjusting the tang. Get the OEM spring. Make sure the intake gasket isn't leaking. Put your hand some over the carburetor and see if it slows. Check if the throttle is sticking in it's bore. They do on these carbs.

Are there always 2 springs? My Rover Wayfarer with a Quattro engine is over revving and running very loud. Took the filter off and the smaller spring is there with not much tension but the big spring is not there and I can't remember whether it was there before. I did fiddle with the valves and since then I've had this over revving issue.
@Pushmowerrepair8 жыл бұрын
There is not always 2 springs, It is best to run the mower without the air filter while adjusting so you can see that action of the throttle and springs, It is safe to do so in a clean dust free environment for short periods of time.

PushMowerRepair.com fnaguitarplayer9 hello mate wondering could you help me with a problem I seem to have with my Briggs and Stratton lawn more engine , The. Lawn more is revving high . I took off the air filter and all the throttle cables is cut off so it's only the governor is out the side I have it pulled the hole way back and it still revs high is there anyway on earth I can fix it thanks .
@Countdown70s7 жыл бұрын
I don't know what you have, but the older model B&S engines with die-cast carbs but still with carb on tank, often only had the larger spring, and it is a different appearance spring, without a long arm at one end like Sprints/450 series etc..
@suzieq83794 жыл бұрын
mine is behind the flywheel im not sure what to do my is revving up bad got to be the spring in front like your spring i don;t know whether to tighten it or loosen it
@scorpiouk59149 жыл бұрын
Ah, the Governor! I had no idea. A friend taught me how to rebuild the carb and the last time I did it, it was over-revving just like this mower. I thought I had messed up the linage somehow, but it looked fine. Last week, the vibration caused the blade to drop right off the mower. No worries, I heard the clanking and stopped the mower before it could "throw it", it just dropped right on the ground. I hope this is the problem, I really can't afford a new mower right now.

That governor spring was shot dude!.............Why didn't you put a new one on it???

Great vid but unfortunately unhelpful for mine my mower is similar but it only has the on governor spring not the 2 and it dosnt have that flap thing on the flywheel but still a great video clear and informative
@dwayner25189 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the vid, I followed your steps to adjust as it was revving high & had no rev range just fast & off but it made no change until I released some tension on the small spring a bit of testing gave me the desired rev range. I was wondering though since you bent the tab away from the governor wouldn't that apply excess tension on the governor not allowing to fluctuate?
@Pushmowerrepair9 жыл бұрын
+Dwayne Rothe bending the tab is not always needed, on some machines different springs have been used and the tab can interfere, however if it is not causing any problems a little bit of adjustment on the springs will usually solve any problems.

+PushMowerRepair.com Thanks, my 86 YO neighbour is thrilled to have it working again, I overhauled the carby, reset magneto gap & replaced o-rings & gaskets but was unsure on the governor springs settings, your vid really helped me out, thanks again for taking the time to post it
@RussellBooth19774 жыл бұрын
The fan shroud must be installed for the governor to work properly if it's removed,it just saves anyone chasing their tail all day trying to figure the problem out if they have theirs removed !

my smaller spring is loose and my bigger spring is tight, how do I lower the speed, which tab I bend or do I need to address springs too
@Home_made_ch9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for video. However from my experience can say that bending metal is not good idea.You are changing distance between flap and that metal, that is made by manufacturer. When you buying new governor spring set, there shown which model to fit that set. same thing with stretching or bending springs. adjust rews always possible with mowing handle, but will get problem with engine rews under pressure, when getting to cut different hight grass.But governor working principe is correct

hey i just fixed up my dads mower , however when i put it back together and started the mower it revs at full throttle. so i played around with linkage springs now it runs perfect idle and good rev but only whilst the air filter is off once i screw it on and start it the revs stay high again. any ideas.
@Pushmowerrepair11 жыл бұрын
Hi Sometimes when the air filter is put back in place the linkage springs can get caught or be obstructed this is most often the cause of the problem you describe, the easiest way to check/resolve this is to carefully put the air filter on while the mower is running and try to see what changes.

One 3.5 I'm working on currently although VERY easy starter, seems to have anaemic throttle response,especially compared to the 2 Victa with "450-series" Briggs I also have, and I'm wondering if low spring tension of this spring is a likely cause...OTOH, it is possible to run this mower at a very low idle b4 kill switch kicks in, compared to the other two.
@Pushmowerrepair7 жыл бұрын
The slow throttle response could be related to the slower idle then the other mowers, a higher tension spring would likely speed up the idle and throttle response.

You bent the wrong metal tab. If you bend the tab that the larger spring connects to in or out it will change the rpm. No need to bend the spring like that.
@jeffarp7409 Жыл бұрын
I think that he bent the tab that actually adjust the rpm, out of the way and bent the spring instead.

It must be better to replace the springs it looks awful and it´s not the right way to adjust it. The small spring is used to raise the rpm when the motor is working hard.
@gordbaker8963 жыл бұрын
Nope. Get new springs and install them correctly. Air Cleaner bolt must be installed for proper tune.
