Time after time, people have tried to convince me that birds experience emotions, much like humans do. I can't tell you how many videos I have been encouraged to watch in support of this 'altruistic' position. From the beginning, I have ALWAYS disagreed with this notion. Perhaps I reasoned, there might be a singular feeling and/or expression of something...most likely something primal, such as fear, but nothing too complex. With that said, I now have a video that I'm going to share with a few 'believers.' The thing is, people can reply and try to convince me all they want that this video is not a true representation; rather it's one-off deed done by a desperate mother. This mother 'did what she had to do' when it came to the rest of her brood. See, that's just it. Humans don't operate in a vacuum of utility. In other words, we don't simply undertake any action...as long as it provides for the greater good. The only position that I've ever try to show is that the behaviors of birds are mostly, if not all, purely instinctual. How else do we explain the mother taking almost no time to decide which baby would die, only to then be fed to the rest of their willing (and hungry) siblings? After all, aren't these the very siblings that people have often pointed out to me truly care for each other, which is so often evidenced by how they literally sleep on each other? Perhaps, that might be true, but I choose instead to believe they sleep this way to simply use each other for warmth...a major survival skill, especially early on in life. If you want further evidence, just watch how they basically step on/over their lovely sibling to be first in line as soon as mom shows up with food. In the end, these animals behave instinctively. They operate at the basic level of survival needs: shelter, food, air/life (defending one's life). When a mom defends her offspring by standing in front of them when danger presents itself...or outstretches her wings to hide them from a predator, she is not doing this from an altruistic sense...not at all. She is doing this purely from her instinct-driven DNA. In other words, mom is programmed to do these things purely for the benefit of her species, and then for her genes specifically. This description can also be used to describe something truly arbitrary and inanimate from this same bird: it's how a newly-minted mother can somehow build a nest when expecting a brood, when she has never been taught to build a nest of any kind before. It is simply a part of her DNA.

I think some birds do, others don't. Smaller birds seem to care more for their young. Predatory birds seem to not give a shit and will kill young/siblings. Purple martins for instance, seem to mourn deaths, eagles are just like "Ok whatever" when one sibling kills another. But I have seen hawks where the relative, not just the parents or sibling, will share food with young of their own species. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of this bird. Corvids are similar, granted they can be brutal. It might come down to them having a bigger or better processor for a brain where they can reason that it makes sense to help each other or their siblings/close family by sharing for instance food.

На запас, тех старшеньких могут съесть другие животные, вороны хищники и ТД, или по каким то обстоятельствам они могут вообще не вылупится.. а также младшенькие играют роль запаса ( холодильника) пока еды хватает, всё сыты и довольны, но наступает день и еды нету, и здесь свою роль играет самый слабый птенец. Думайте прежде всего, перед тем как задать вопросы... Такие глупые вопросы.. природа очень продумана, поверьте и знает что делает ..

That baby chick was sick and dying already. In the beginning, you can see siblings pecking at it and it is sickly looking. Mom knows it won't survive, so to keep nest clean and it is winter time, scarce food supply, she makes a decision for the best. Kill off chick, feed hungry chicks. Instinct is not sentimental, it is survival based reasoning or thinking. Birds have no bad intentions, only the instinct to survive and procreate.

@@mansoormuzamil3037 It is pretty glaringly obvious based on the size of that baby compared to the rest that something is obviously wrong with it. Raptors and predator birds have been known to steal and brood baby chicks that aren't their own for up to days at a time before killing and feeding them to the babies. This is pretty normal behavior.

I've seen videos of Kestrels before on youtube, and in many cases if there's not an abundance of food to feed, let's say 5 or 6 chicks, then some may die of starvation because the older and bigger chicks force their way to the front to feed. Then once the chicks die of lack of food, then the adult will feed the dead chick to the brood. But I have never seen an adult just randomly kill one of her chicks. Very strange.

It’s creepy how the chicks don’t recognize each other as food. They are starving and have a meal next to them but don’t see it as food and Don’t know how to tear it up. But once the mother picks one up for a brief second suddenly they only see it as food haha

I think they had started to get an idea that it might be a contender, just before mom came and started preparing to feed them the small weak looking chick, the others had started pecking at it. But I think they only understand that when mom approaches with something in her beak, it's usually food. Since everything they eat comes from her beak at this stage. They always seem to get excited when she has something in her beak.

Of COURSE they don't "recognize each other as food"! Cannibalism is rare in the animal community and why would they eat their siblings unless they were absolutely going to die? That's such a strange way of looking at wildlife, from the opinion of a degreed wildlife biologist...Additionally, they allow their parent to tear the food for them as her beak is larger and better suited for the task. It's a matter of efficiency, they're NOT stupid...

아마도 사냥을 나간 아빠새가 사고를 당해서 죽은것 같습니다 어미새는 기다려 보지만 아빠새는 돌아오지않고 배고픔에 제일약한 막내가 쓰러져서 일어나지 못하자 나머지 새끼들을 살리기 위해서 막내를 뜯어서 먹인것 같습니다 이것이 마지막 죽음이면 다행이지만 계속 아빠새가 오지않는다면 먹이 부족으로 또 다른 새끼들이 차례로 죽음을 맞이할수가 있어요 이러한 비참한 일들이 일어나지 않기 위해서는 제발 아빠새가 살아서 돌아오기를 간절히 바랄뿐입니다

I notice predator birds usually start to rip up any prey starting from the head first for the fastest kill. If a brood is too big and food is scarce, a mother bird will reduce the brood by killing the smallest or weakest first to feed it to the others for best survival of the remaining brood.

@ 6:32, The fear can clearly be seen in the next littlest #5 baby. It knows it will be next to be killed if it appears in any way weak or too much less in size than the others. A very evident knowing fear, after having part in eating their littlest #6 sibling. They fearfully cower in a huddle. Baby #5 seems to instinctively knows it will be next. Unfortunate for any chick last to be hatched.
