Sailing Luckyfish

Күн бұрын

This week Luckyfish rushes to Florida by an unusual route. Dodging coral heads and skimming the banks for mile after mile we sail across the Tongue of The Ocean before heaving-to, south of Andros Island.

Thank YOU for not adding the nonskipable ads, I REALLY ENJOY your channel and all others uninterupted. Yes it is a loss of ad revenue but i hope everyone will pitch in where they can to make up for this. Can't wait to see what this season has to bring. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve H.

Another great one Stew. I must say your story telling and editing has seen great improvements since the beginning. Good job mate. Honorable way to present the new add change in KZbin. I like your choice. KZbin is already making a crap ton of coin and I am sure this is just a way for them to squeeze even more.

very classy and strategically a smart play. I have no problem with 5 second ads appearing at the beginning of a video or even one or two during the video but sometimes I get some strange, completely off my interests chart and even offensive ads and I would absolutely not sit through those. if they ever get rid of all skipable ads I at least hope the creators have a say in the type of ads that may be played on their channel. No worries though, I'm planning on becoming a supporter as soon as I finish paying child support or building my boat, whichever comes first :D

Another great episode! With each one I'm more happy that I found this channel. Especially an episode like this. Your values are so refreshing, especially in this age where greed, and more, more, more, has become all but institutionalized. It's very inspiring that there are such salt of the earth folk like you out there. I recently went to Patreon and increased my contribution per video. I was not planning on even mentioning it, but given what you said about declining the advertising option, I wanted badly to show how much I appreciate you guys, your respect for us, and the wonderful and interesting experiences that you're so generous in sharing ;-)

It is a very unique schooner rig for sure. Breaking up the sail plan that way makes the sails more easily managed. The other truly unique thing are the wing sails. No mast track. The sails are actually zipped onto the non stayed masts. I have one being built like LF now and am very excited to play with this new type of sail configuration.

Hi Stew n Zaya, You tube has the monopoly on this social media n from what I see is a lot of work from people like you for little money. So i see your decision And it’s a shame with all the money these adds generate for them that they could give some more money to you n others especially with the non Skip alternative they want you to have. Hopefully someone will compete n give a fair amount more $s to you . I’m always busy n maybe you in Florida someday soon. Still great stuff

Do your engines lock into place in the down position in the nacelle? I can only see the pulley system you use. Regards Kyle
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
+kyle n - we can lock the pods down, funny thing called the Wharram broomstick! We have two broomstick handles cut to length, they are pressed into the pod and wedged under the deck. the only time they are needed is when using reverse gear at higher revs. They stop the pods from lifting up under the thrust from the prop. e.g. if maneuvering in tight quarters eg marina docking. Do you have a similar nacelle system? cheers Stew
@kylen2288
@kylen2288 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stew, I have a Woods design Gypsy cat. The original builder decided not to go with the nacelle option that Woods recommended. They ended up mounting twin 10hp outboards on the rear cockpit. Unfortunately this has proved most unsatisfactory as the engines suffer water intake in a following sea. Looking at new options.
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
+kyle n - interesting - an unfortunate case of departing from the design plan. Do you have any option now to install the nacelles? I took a look online at the Gypsy - Woods boats are always of interest to Wharramites and vice versa. You probably have a bit more load carrying than us? we are approx. 4T light, 5.1T laden.

Likely the reason You Tube is attempting this non-skip ads scheme is they are feeling the heat and lost revenue due to people skipping ALL ads as a punishment after they started demonetizing particular You Tube creators based on phoney criteria and political reasoning. Bit Chute continues to grow as an alternative.
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
I hear you on that. Great point. YT rely on the algo (what else can they do with 300 hrs of video uploaded every minute) to make decisions. It's a blunt instrument. Do you think Bit Chute or Vimeo etc could ever compete? Cheers

I have no experience but have heard Navionics is very unreliable and has caused many a sailor to run aground and crash his boat. What are your thoughts on Navionics?
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
+Darrell Allen - actually very good! We did read up quite a bit on the reliability of Navionics charting through the Exumas and found very good reviews. We still went for the Explorer Charts which meant a new card though (C-Map) as Explorer and Navionics dont play together :-( . The Explorer's are the bees knees for the Bahamas and spoil you when you venture outside their coverage! Does anyone else want to share their experience with charting software? Cheers mate, Stew

I think making non-skippable ads available to all creators is fine. It's at the creators' discretion whether or not they implement it. to be clear though, are non-skippable ads the ones that are 5 seconds long? Or are they the long ones that can be more than 60 seconds? If it's the 5 second ones, I prefer them over the skippable ads since they just close by themselves and aren't that big of an intrusion. I don't understand why advertisers with skippable ads don't do more to get their point across and draw a viewer in in the first 5 seconds of the ad so they keep watching. Strangely enough there are some skippable ads that I've watched all the way through on purpose.
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
+strawhatguy303 - interesting to hear that angle. It will be up to the creator to set the length of the non-skip time...presumably longer = more ad revenue. My concern is the trend towards continual erosion of the viewing experience. There are other economic models out there that play more fairly for everyone. Thanks alot for commenting! Stew
@strawhatguy303
@strawhatguy303 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Stew, at the end of the day you're right viewing experience is paramount. I think that allowing creators to make the decision will implement a sort of "evolution" where the channels that abuse long un-skippable ads will fall by the wayside as viewers would move to other channels that have less distracting ads. I like the Patreon and (tastefully applied) baked in sponsorship spots in videos since these (as I've heard) are more reliable sources of income for creators. I think youtube giving creators options for their ads is important since youtube needs to make some money to keep the lights on too. To me one of the most distracting things about ads on youtube is how they'll show up in the middle of something, just popping in when something important is happening. I don't know if creators have full control of when ads are applied when it comes to the middle of the video, but it would be nice if the ads could be placed somewhere less obtrusive like in between scenes or sections of a video.
@SailingLuckyfish
@SailingLuckyfish 6 жыл бұрын
+strawhatguy303 You make some great points. We do say where the ads should be placed, however, we have noticed in our travels that in different countries - weird things happen. Ultimately its YT who make the placements, the type of ad (we have seen non-skippables *before* our videos play in the US for example). I note your comment about paying more attention to ad placement (to the extent where we *do* have control). Thanks again.

You must be a real power user. I'm running an I7 processor and wouldn't notice a resource hog if I had one. I've never seen a need for a filter and the program runs flawlessly without me knowing it's there. So if you think yours is somehow better than all that, then enjoy it. But claims such as "better than others" does not convince me I need to change from what works. And I could care less if they sell my data, everyone else is.
